Sudden Unexpected Acceleration (SUA)
If you are fortunate enough to have the time to stop the vehicle before crashing into something—Press on the brake pedal and shift into neutral (N) or park (P) It is an awareness every driver should know.
It was a most terrifying, horrible event that happened 2 times within 3 days. One event was considered an accident, though I did not crash, by God’s grace.
I bought a brand new 2023 RAV4 Hybrid from Newbold Toyota. After the accident I had my RAV towed to Newbold. It was in my opinion, unsafe to drive let alone I was too traumatized to ever get back inside it.
I called Newbold Toyota Service Dept to inform them of what had happened and why it was towed there. Within an hour, I received a c/b from Jim (a good person) who told me to contact Toyota Brand Engagement Center due to my statement of SUA and they would be able to help me from there.
Making a long, very unpleasant story shorter (3 mo ordeal) I was not given a loaner vehicle ($3,000 to rent), not only was I both physically and emotionally hurt I had to gruelingly wait for their findings. I was told ‘the electrical data recorder results showed that during both SUA ordeals the accelerator was being fully depressed’, “They were unable to help me”. Well, I know and God knows it was NOT my foot depressing the accelerator pedal!
Very disheartened, I went back to Newbold to see what I could do about a trade in. I was upset enough that I really wanted to purchase a different brand. But personally knowing my ‘23 RAV was unsafe and not reliable I could not do that to another company. BUT since Toyota declared my vehicle was fine I felt Newbold was the correct choice.
I felt extremely rushed with the process of finding a different new RAV4 Hybrid however, one would not be available until mid Oct ‘24. Since my request for a loaner car was declined, I could not physically or emotionally spend more money on a rental..Josh R managed to get a gas only RAV4 from Peoria, IL. His efforts were greatly appreciated.
I am not fully satisfied with the outcome, I am content and SO relieved to have this horrible ordeal over with. My prayer and hope is that Newbold will not resell the previous RAV unless they can ‘find’ and fully resolve the electrical issue that caused the SUA ordeals.
There are more details in my story but I covered the basics.
I understand SUA has occurred in other vehicle makers as well. The intricate design and technology in the complex vehicles manufactured these days make it more likely to have issues such as SUA happen.
By the way, Newbold serviced my 2013 RAV4 when I moved here 2 years ago. I was satisfied enough that I chose Newbold Toyota over Honda.”
