“I was wandering along in San Francisco on my way to visit the bookbinder museum when I met the owner of The Box SF, Mark. When I told him I was interested in books and other historical items, he graciously invited me to enter his shop. The outside is discrete and belies how magical the inside space truly is. When you enter, you're immediately blown away by the vintage art and artifacts everywhere. Mark and his assistant, Israel, gave me a mini-tour and explained how the shop specializes in ephemera, which refers to items that were designed for short-term use (advertising prints, perfume bottles, soap labels, etc). The shop contains items from the mid-1800s to the early-1900s from around the world. Everything is in great condition and attests to the craftsmanship of earlier time periods. What was supposed to be a quick 20-30 minute visit turned into a 2-hour visit.Everywhere you turn, there's something new to take in. I love antique and thrift stores, yet I have never encountered anything as unique as The Box. I found some souvenirs to take home with me and even the wrapping paper was this cool, historical print. The Box is a treasure trove for people who love vintage, antique, or novel artifacts. If that's your style, you have to visit.”

“An excellent source for graphic novels for school age kids, especially if you want more diversity than the typical marvel or DC approach. When I found out my 1st grader was trans, this store helped me find age appropriate books that they could see themselves in. And they in turn learned stories about brown kids, black kids, and immigrants from other graphic novels there that I would never have known existed. Staff are excellent and know their stock.”

“Fascinating collection of ephemera esp bright graphic posters from as early as the 1880s or so maybe earlier. Saw a few Mucha items and many travel posters and war propaganda posters. Ended up buying an awesome travel to Normandy poster featuring art by Dali made for French tourism. Got it sent directly home so I wouldn't crumple it in transit. Thank you Joe for your knowledge and enthusiasm for these vintage posters!”

“My photographer friend recommended that we checkout Pier 24's Photography exhibit while we're in SF. We found out from one of the vendors at the Ferry Landing Market that Pier 24 will be closing. When. We arrived and asked she confirmed what we heard. The current exhibit will be here until December which it will close. It will reopen in March 2024 and run until 2025 which it will then permanently close. If you have a chance to checkout the exhibit, do so now. Tip: make reservations before going.”

“Be sure to stop by Lola's next time you are in Noe. She has the nicest selection of gifts, clothing and accessories. I just got a beautiful coral scarf here for a trip yesterday and can't wait to wear it! Have also purchased a wide variety of other items here over the last few years such as gloves, hair clips, aprons, kitchen towels and more. I always enjoy great quality and service from Lola and her lovely team. Don't forget to ask about her custom clothing as well -- such a talented seamstress and artist!”

“We had a wonderful time at this gallery, checking out all the great art and hearing wonderful stories with Barry. We ended up buying 2 pieces and thought the prices were excellent. And he gave us 2 beautiful books on the artists. I cannot recommend this gallery, and most specifically Barry, enough. A super super nice, funny and knowledgeable guy.”

“Modern Eden is awesome. They show work from a wide variety of artists working in an illustrative or narrative style with some artists really pushing the limits of the genre. Art openings are usually on the 2nd Saturday of the month with a great chance of talking with the artists featured. They show work by 2D and 3D artists and also offer layway so that collecting artwork is really affordable for anyone who loves art.”

“This is a cool and trendy place to get wine and drinks. It's kind of a comfortable place that is like a lounge and it is more quiet and cozy then loud. It can accommodate late groups or it is good to go out with friends or on a date. I went with some girl friends and we all got a glass of wine. The ambience here is dimly lit and the service is good.”

“So many different art galleries and exhibits to roam around freely and explore, most of them to be found at 1275 Minnesota Street (which has an attached bar/restaurant, Besharam), including hand saw art (Rico Solinas You Never Know), Manifest Differently film room, and Natalya Burd's electric wonderland showcasing trees and nature with a neon mirror effect. There were more exhibits to see at 1150 25th Street, including An Opera of Whispers, a unique representation of communication through objects. Rohini Devasher's One Hundred Thousand Suns was located in its own separate space (1201 Minnesota St.) with captivating fabric printed artworks hanging from the vaulted ceiling, and a dark film room with multiple screens playing and plenty of comfy seating for visitors (though the place was quite empty on a Saturday afternoon). This exhibition combines art and science to depict various dimensions of the sun. Best part of the Minnesota Street Project, no cost to visit and admire the amazing works of diverse and skilled artists.”

“Great art gallery located on a corner in the mission. The top level is bright with a lot of natural light shining through the windows. Lots of art that I had never seen before and I found to be really exquisite. They have a downstairs basement level with additional art pieces and ones that you could browse through wrapped individually. Recognized one artist where I had seen their work in DTLA before and it was nice to see their work on other formats. Would recommend dropping in if you enjoy admiring art. :] guy on staff was also really kind. I would say that there are some affordable pieces here and interesting perspectives.”

“We went here looking for a gift. After the holiday seal there was only just a little bit left but all of it was really nice. I had never been here before about one of those pleasantly surprised because it is very close to home. The person who greeted us was really cheerful and helpful and explaining how the studio is set up and help buying from the sale helps support the artist's directly. And they have other sales at other times of the year that also support the studio. Lots of really talented artists and I ended up buying a gift for a friend that was really cute.”

“We recently visited Michael Gallery and was utterly enchanted! The store is a treasure trove of unique and rare finds, from vintage decor to antique jewelry. The owner's passion for antiques is evident in the thoughtful curation of the collection. I was impressed by the variety of items on display, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. The store's atmosphere is charming and nostalgic, making it a delightful experience to browse. The owner was knowledgeable and friendly, happy to share stories and history behind the pieces. I left with a beautiful vintage vase and can't wait to return for more discoveries. If you're an antique enthusiast or simply looking for a special piece, this gallery is a must-visit destination. Five stars and highly recommended!"”

“It's Debatably my favorite museum in the city. It IS the only museum I bought a membership to. I USED it too!It does include a membership to its sister museum, the Legion on Honor as well. Super cool! Would have loved to had seen it if I had time. ?Every time I had time, the De Young had a cool exhibit I wanted to see though! It is possible that as someone who went to college to study archeology, I am bias to permanent installations as well. My favorite college professor was a mayanist, and the museum has a great exhibit.I have a membership, but the last visit I went to was a free day and there was 0 line... nothing to hold you back!”

“We were gifted a pottery session with Marieke for our anniversary and had a blast! Her studio is an easy BART ride from our home in the East Bay. All attendees were beginners, like us. Marieke began with a brief history of her home, as well as of her basement studio and the mystery of the "X?X" club that used to meet there. She demonstrated how to use the pottery wheel, and we dove in! Everything we needed was already provided for us, and Marieke was attentive to our needs. She was extremely patient in offering advice and stepping in, if desired. My husband and I each made two pieces and selected the glaze for each one. We are excited that we will be returning to the studio in a few weeks to pick up the finished products. Marieke was very organized and professional in her approach to her business. (Oh, and the bonus is being in the vibrant Mission District, with no shortage of things to see and places to eat!) Highest recommendations!”
