“My favorite shop in Berkeley! Great selection of new and used books. I like to shop their old Modern Library edition philosophy books. Decent selection of used CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and comics. Even the curios in the glass case are fun to look at. They don't pay out as well as they used to but they still provide a good service by buying books. I ride my bike across town just to come here and it's usually my main reason to come to downtown.”

“Phenomenal little bookstore. I was worried that the shop would be too small/narrow for my rollater walker, but I can squeeze through just fine. Larger/wider wheelchairs may be an issue, but I'm sure the folks inside would be happy to help-- the staff here is incredibly kind and accommodating. They also offer punch cards for regular patrons!”

“First time here, loved it. So many items for little ones. I don’t have any little ones so I ended up with a color pencil for myself and a squish mellow. My mini teen enjoyed the little trinkets. He purchased a pet rock. I highly recommend even if just to browse.”

“They have an eclectic collection of books, movies and music DVDs. Apparently, these are donations that didn't make it to the library shelves. Prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly. I actually like this place better than the Pleasant Hill library which has tried to become too many things. If you are a nerdy bibliophile that likes older reading material, try this bookstore.”

“I love this bookstore! I came a bit early to my Apple Genius Bar appointment next door so came here to kill time. I was almost late to my appointment because I was so distracted here! As someone who is studying urban planning in grad school, you can only imagine how interested I was in every little book... Everything is clean and organized. The employees are very friendly, and during my visit, they even had a cute Norwich terrier leashed and well-behaved by the cashier counter! I ended up purchasing colored pencils and an adult coloring book that was sized well-- it fits perfectly inside my purse! The prices are a bit higher than Amazon (I checked) but I'm all for supporting local businesses, so it was worth it for me. I'm not from the area but if I were, I'd make this a regular stop!”

“What makes an excellent Indie bookstore? It's in the name. Sleepy Cat Books was something I happened upon while adventuring in Berkeley. You should adventure too.Happily I found a copy of the international bestseller, The Travelling Cat Chronicles. I finished it yesterday. If you have not read it, do! For me it was as if I was revisiting my time in Japan.It's as if the bookshelves know what you are looking for and provide the answer. It is important for me to spend dollars when I am in another city. How fortunate I feel to be introduced to this shop.”

“When I entered Marcus Books (we went there immediately after I flight landed in SF), I felt like I'd arrived home. I approached the front counter and asked the lady behind the desk if she was the owner. Her response, "Yes, I'm one of them." When I told her that I LOVE the bookstore, she said, "It loves you back." What an amazing store, the selection is broad and comprehensive, featuring multiple genres by and about Black ppl. I limited myself to 3 books and nothing else, which was a deal I had to make with myself before entering!! LOL! The feeling of being in a bookshop that's been around since the 1960s is indescribable.
