10AM - 5PM
3645 Mount Diablo Blvd Suite C, Lafayette“I absolutely love this place. I'm confused by the reviews saying the prices are high, and this is by far the cheapest used bookstore around. The selection may not be as extensive as some of the bigger stores, but I always manage to find something interesting when I'm there. The staff is incredibly sweet as well.”
“This store has the best selection of Judaica and the owners are so helpful. It is such a pleasure to have a brick and mortar store where I can compare items. And around holiday times there is no better place to shop.”
“as soon as i knew i was going to be in berkeley, the first thing i thought of was ”i need to go to sleepy cat books again!” :) it is simply the warmest and coziest little indie book shop that feels like being wrapped up in a blanket with a hot cup of coffee. if no one stopped me, i could spend hours browsing the impressive postcard and sticker collections, as well as the very skillfully curated staff pick tables! definitely a must visit if you are in the area and want to get a bit of an escape amidst all of life’s chaos as both the owner and lyla are very sweet and welcoming :)”
11:30AM - 6PM
1355 Park St, Alameda“I love this shop! I brought in about 20 CD's to sell and they bought them all for a good price - when does this ever happen?? The staff is very friendly and helpful. While here, I picked up Jennifer Egan's A Visit From the Goon Squad in excellent condition for $5 bucks. They also have a great selection of DVD's. Another thing of note is that the store is very well organized and tidy, making it easy to find what you're looking for.”
“This is my favorite local bookstore. I've gone here to buy books for all kinds of special occasions over the years. I especially like that they have bilingual books for kids. Unfortunately, with them closing at 7:00 p.m. it's been tough for me to get here after work. Today I showed up a couple minutes before closing but they had already locked up. What a bummer. Wish they were open later.”
“This is my favorite book store in America. It is a very beautiful place and I love being here when I have a chance. It has so much good books and is like 5 floors of literary excellence. This is the creme de La creme of the Bay Area and it's book store's. This is a rare find and a nice honest place. I was going to head out to go to Moe's books one time during a social unrest and called because there was protests. I asked the worker if it was safe to come down. He told me don't do it, come next week will still be here. I thanks him and saved myself being arrested or harassed. Thanks”
“My go to record store. Huge selection, friendly staff, great used barn finds and good prices. They also have a great, honest, rating system for used records. They’ll also order you pretty much anything you can’t find. Great selection of local artists too. Highly recommend.”
11AM - 8PM
1344 Park St, Alameda“A fine store. I went in to get some gift cards for Xmas. They have lots of games and toys too. Staff was nice enough. I definitely want to support that local business. There's a Public parking lot near by and some other cool shops to peruse. Head on in!”
10:30AM - 7PM
3086 Claremont Ave, Berkeley“My husband and I have been science fiction readers since we were kids looking for stories to read. We've been happy customers of this shop since we discovered it, a very long time ago.Now we're thinkers, editors and writers, but those books and more are still there in this magical shop, waiting to jump out at more curious young readers like we used to be. In fact, there's a rumor that Santa sends his elves there every September to scout for new stories. Just sayin'...”
“This is a smaller Barnes and Noble but they still manage to have a decent selection. You most likely won't find books that aren't as mainstream or popular but they always have new releases and events. The staff is friendly, helpful, and the store is clean.”
“This place is awesome! You could find books at affordable prices, sometimes hard to find vinyl records, retro gaming systems, and games. The staff is friendly, helpful, and supportive.”
11AM - 5PM
955 Contra Costa Blvd, Pleasant Hill“They have an eclectic collection of books, movies and music DVDs. Apparently, these are donations that didn't make it to the library shelves. Prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly. I actually like this place better than the Pleasant Hill library which has tried to become too many things. If you are a nerdy bibliophile that likes older reading material, try this bookstore.”
10AM - 8PM
5560 College Ave, Oakland“Pegasus Bookstore is a great place to buy used as well as classic hard to find books. They have a phenomenal children’s selection as well as new books, tee shirts and other gift items”
“Love this local book shop. They have a loyalty program and the staff are so nice! They helped me special order a book for my kids bday and were so thoughtful with the whole process. Support a local small business!”

10AM - 6PM
2904 College Ave, Berkeley“Love Mrs. Dalloway's! I enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the shop. The managers and staff do a fantastic job of displaying book reviews and recommendations for you to choose. There's a great mix of newer releases and older classics. Pricing is fair on all their titles. Can't wait to come back and make another purchase!”
“Outstanding fine & rare bookseller. Books are meticulously and accurately described and Laurelle Swan's inventory is notable for the fine condition of her books. Books are, for the most part, fairly priced in the middle of the typical range from comparable booksellers. Customer service is exceptional - Laurelle will remember your requests, diligently hunt for difficult to find private press books and promptly notify you if she can successfully acquire a copy. Swan's Fine Books is a valuable resource for serious collectors.”
“Spectator Books has a fabulous selection of new and used books. The store has many little rooms and feels both welcoming and challenging since there are so many different kinds of books to examine. It’s very possible to literally spend hours reading and exploring in this delightful bookstore.”
10:30AM - 8PM
5433 College Ave, Oakland“This has become one of my favorite bookstores. It's beautiful inside and has a wonderful book selection in many genres. When I visited twice last month, the woman working was kind and friendly. I found two interesting books (including one featured here in the image) and a gift for a friend. Great place for book lovers!”
9:30AM - 5PM
3 Railroad Ave, Danville“This magical local book store hosted a meet and greet with Andy Griffiths last night. I decided to bring my boys to the event and I'm so glad that I did. They were thoroughly entertained and left inspired to read more. We left the bookstore and by the time we got into the car, they were asking me to bring them to the next children's event.”
10AM - 6PM
6121 La Salle Ave, Oakland“wonderful way to discover new releases and older gems. I love how the bookstore is formatted - truly feels like a treasure trove and helps me rediscover the magic of finding the unexpected.”
10AM - 4PM
2433 Channing Way, Berkeley“I went to this book store with my mom. I'm not into books, but my mom is a big reader. I think all the books are donated or they bought. My mom bought three books, just for $4.50. Really cheap books. That's my 5 stars.”
“Worth the trip. Curated and thoughtful selection of fine old and recent books. Science fiction and fantasy particularly good. After ice cream at Fenton's [same building!] browse and chat, and probably find a gem. I did find a gem: the Smithsonian gem catalog from decades ago, with the Hope Diamond on the cover!”
10AM - 5:30PM
276 Village Square, Orinda“What a great bookstore! And it's a really great place for last minute kids birthday gifts, they do a great job with the complimentary gift wrap. The people who work here are the best. ❤️”
“The Lawrence Hall of is an amazing place! Perfect place for kids to explore and play. Different aspects of science to appease whatever mood he's in and keep him engaged and curious. I love all of the hands on activities and fun ways to learn science concepts. It's not filled with a bunch of exhibits with reading and pictures only, but actual activities with included supplies or high quality displays to touch. Only thing I would change would the food selection. The cafe has been closed and the snacks in the gift shop are hardly foods that any responsible parent would give their kids (the most nutritious thing is a lunchable or protein pack with almonds and cheese). The rest are chips/candy/cookies. So bring your own lunch.”
“A really fantastic local bookstore offering a selection of new and used books. It's not huge, but the range is impressive and eclectic. The owner is thoughtful and friendly. An excellent Lafayette resource.”
