Awesome gym and setup. Extremely knowledgeable coaches and positive attitude and overall experience. Looking to expand my strength training skills and reduce injuries as I age, and I clearly came to the right place! Great for athletes or regular joes and Jane’s of all ages, highly recommended for whatever fitness goals you’re working on!

Clean nice lifting gym with a great set up. Strictly weight lifting no other equipment. I've worked with Britney & head coach Matt, both are awesome & everyone welcome. Rehabbing injuries & in 3 mo I've healed 1 of 3 tears on my rotator & increased my strength & functional fitness. If you're looking for a get down to business gym that will teach you how to properly lift & avoid injuries this gym is for you. Having all your lifts coached makes a huge difference & if strength is what you seek then stop in.

My brother told me about a new gym he joined, and was ecstatic about the personal attention the coaches gave him. I have only had five training sessions and I am very pleased with the quality of the instruction, cleanliness of the gym and the friendliness of the staff and other clients. If you were looking to build strength in a safe environment, this could be the place for you.

I have been working online with Matt Hebert for a year now, and more recently I was in SA for a week and managed to get three sessions in person. If I were living in SA, I wouldn't dream going anywhere else. We've also been working around an injury of mine and Matt's insights have been invaluable. Everyone I've met is also very personable.

Okay, so on my first day at this gym I stumbled in with the grace of a newborn giraffe and the confidence of a seasoned weightlifter. Let me tell you, folks, I was wrong on both counts.
Picture this: A group of silver foxes and wise owls, folks who probably remember when Arnold Schwarzenegger was just a puny little Schwarzenberry. Yet here they were, deadlifting like it was a casual stroll in the park. Meanwhile, I'm over here, convinced that my back would resemble a pretzel if I so much as looked at a barbell.
But oh boy, did this gym prove me wrong! They took me under their muscular wings and taught me that age ain't nothing but a number. Sure, my knees creaked like an old rocking chair at first, but with their guidance, I learned proper form faster than you can say 'protein shake.'
So if you're like me, thinking you already knew it all about weight lifting since you’d already been coached prior to this, or too broken to lift weights again, think again. This gym will not only whip your body into shape but also lift your spirits higher than your max deadlift. Who needs a chiropractor when you've got a gym full of wise-cracking weightlifters? Sign me up for a lifetime membership, folks!

I had the opportunity to train with Joseph at Starting Strength San Antonio yesterday. The gym is in pristine condition - the equipment is of the highest caliber and has been chosen to make heavy barbell training as streamlined and efficient as possible. Thanks to Matt, the Head Coach of the gym for running a smooth operation.
Joseph’s 20+ years of experience training and his coaching insight is incredibly valuable - within one 90 minute session he tuned up my squat, press, and deadlift. He reviewed my recent training progress and selected weights that would be appropriate for me to attempt with him given my recent travel, lack of sleep, and less than optimal nutrition that comes with being the parent of a toddler on a road trip.
I highly recommend Starting Strength, the San Antonio gym, as well as Joseph as a coach.

Good and Expensive. Clear results.Overall recieved what seemed like good coaching and met nice people. I feel confident in squat, press, and bench press but not deadlift.Gym appeared very clean.Great jump-start to get into or back into lifting. No hidden fees, though you cannot start monthly membership ($405) until after a mandatory 1 on 1 coaching session ($185) and 1 week/3 sessions of optional training (free), which is not stated on the website untill you click all the way through to sign up for a membership. No sales desk but you will get phone calls, voice-mail, slack messages, and texts from more than one person.?It's worth it if you value accountability, coaching, the idea that spending that kind of money will make you want to make the most out of it, and if you can conform to their schedule. Otherwise, if you don't value those - it's simple programming you can get from the starting strength book, app or youtube and you can get all equipment necessary for the cost of the intro and 1 month membership.10/10 would recommend and have recommended, would do again, hopefully with a discount.

Victoria was the best! From someone who never did any lifting, she helped me understand the meaning behind every detail that goes into the workout. Every day something new was learned and applied for the next season. Couldn’t ask for a better experience and to see my own progression

Been going here for about a month. It has been great! In the past I have joined gyms went a few times and eventually stopped going. This is completely different. They put you on a barbell program, they take care of everything from calculating your warm-up sets to deciding what your max is for that day. While you are lifting the coaches are correcting stance and form. Extremely newbie friendly, they make barbell training very approachable taking time to explain why they want you doing it in a certain stance vs. another.Matt is an incredible coach/trainer. He takes the time and effort to make sure you are not only doing it correctly, but making sure you understand why you are doing it a certain way. If I had tried to do this by myself I would have been injured and given up.Another big plus is that everyone there is super cool, no ego. Everyone is just as happy for the person squatting the barbell as they are for the person squatting 300 lbs.

I started here about 3 months ago because I wanted to pick up lifting but had always found it inaccessible as somebody with no history of training or athletics, and I already feel much more comfortable with weights and more coordinated in physical activity in general. The coaches are friendly, helpful, and made it easy to understand how to do the exercises properly. I was put off by the price at first, but in hindsight it was definitely worth it and I can't recommend it enough.

i found out about starting strength in about 2017 and started the exercises by reading some of the the books and watching youtube videos. I started with just focusing on form, but limited myself to deadlift and squat and chinups for some time. I heard about starting strength opening up in san antonio a year ago and was pretty excited. I have a significant injury on my forearm and wrist and i wanted to challenge my self in building strength because i was noticing that i was gaining some rotation and additional movment just from the workouts on my own, but I hit a wall and i knew i could do more upper body but needed coaches who were willing to work with me improve my form and work through my injury. The coaches definitely know there stuff regarding body mechanics and im constantly asking questions to get to know how it all works.I finally took the leap and joined about 3 weeks ago. To me this is about getting stronger but also about regaining some range of motion in my wrist and right arm in which i have been even if its a degree or two. Truth be told its a way to make day to day activities with loved ones a lot more enjoyable, whether is playing soccer and running with my nephews to taking a hike with a friend. Im realistic of course with my injury and the possible limitations that come with it, but im excited about how this can really improve my overall day to day life and specifically range of motion in my arm. I highly recommend starting strength to anyone whether its post injury or even if its just to get stronger and improve your overall stamina and balance and just vitality for life itself.

I bought the Starting Strength book years ago and used the app off and on over the years. I have wished I could train with an SSC ( Starting Strength Coach). I was thrilled when I went to PJ's coffee one Sunday and noticed that Starting Strength San Antonio was open right next door.I joined that week and have been working out there for 2 months now. I have appreciated the welcoming environment the gym offers - it's a great community! - and the patient professionalism of the coaches - I ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS LOL :)I'm 50 and my goals is to hit the 1000 pound club this year and I am confident it's going to happen at Starting Strength San Antonio!

After finding the Starting Strength method, I began my journey as a solo student eager to learn but with limited experience in proper execution of the major lifts. I tried running through a series of linear progressions, all of which met with disaster. I would typically encounter a limiting arm/elbow injury around the same level each time. I would stop and allow proper time for the injury to heal, but it would always reoccur around the same point in my linear progression.I was excited to see a proper Starting Strength gym open in San Antonio, staffed with knowledgeable coaches who might be able to help me with my situation. During my first gym visitation the coaches asked detailed questions regarding my past training history/experience and what my intended goals were regarding my future training. This was refreshing to see to say the least. They were genuinely invested in helping my break the cycle of repeated injury I found my self in time and time again. After the first few sessions my coach, Matt, suggested we focus on altering the squat grip I had been using to help ease the strain on my elbows. While squatting, I had been so focused on not reinjuring my arms I had severely let my squat technique languish. Matt was very observant and helpful pointing out the inefficiencies I had created in my squat movement. As the training weight progressed higher and higher, Matt continuously reinforced the necessary ques to help me get back on track while keeping my elbows healthy.Thankfully, since my arm pain has subsided I have made unseen progress in my other lift. Matt has been coaching me through the finer details of the overhead press, bench press and deadlift which I never would have picked up on without his guidance. The addition of these small improvements matter a great deal once the weight gets heavy enough. This is why I am so grateful to have a Starting Strength Certified Coach, such as Matt, oversee my training.Let me put it to you this way – I have made more substantial gains in 2 months time by joining this gym than I have buying protein powders, supplements and simply trying to lift by myself at home in 3 years time. The crew at San Antonio Starting Strength are not simply coaches, but they are teachers and experts in their craft!!!!

Fantastic, clean gym. Great place for barbell and strength training.
