“The New Cincinnati Bass Pro Shop, opening night. Was quite the crowd, with live music, and special guests including Johnny Morris.The now closed Mills location was hands down one of my favorite places to visit, so how does it compare?First things first, it is not fair to compare the two, as they were conceived in two different periods in the company’s history. This location features many of the new elements that Bass Pro’s premier locations feature; animal tracks in the floor, a “colonial” arched roof in the center, and a single sided aquarium.First the pros, the best thing about this location? Not having to smell mold the whole time you shop. The Mills location being so old, with poor ventilation (no A/C), and a rotting mall attached to it, made the whole store smell REALLY bad. Some off my shirts still smell like it to this day. If you like the smell of fresh treated wood, get here soon, the smell of wood hits you like a nice cozy cabin in the hills of Tennessee, come smell while it lasts. The use of the Ohio bicentennial barn as a feature of the colonial arch is a great touch, and a great nod to Ohio’s pride.The cons, the most notable that people will notice, is the much smaller aquarium. The Mills location had an aquarium that could be seen from 3 different sides, had a very tall rock formation, and even a tube that you could look into. This location, like many new Bass Pros, has it on the back wall, with only one piece of glass to view in. The water feature is nice, but leaves much to be desired, and one notable feature missing is the mountain goat that was found at the top of the rock formation in the atrium at the Mills location. Another con, would be the fact the architecture of this building is like a Walmart. High, warehouse style ceilings, with no finely crafted plaster, and no second floor to get good views. Gone also is the cooper-esk flooring, replaced with concrete.This location is nice, but it is unfair for me to evaluate the store while looking through rose colored glasses, and comparing it to a store that it never will be. The Mills location is dead, go visit the new Bass Pro with an open mind (and an open wallet).”
