“I highly recommend Applied Fitness Solutions to anyone looking for compassionate, specialized, and effective fitness training and care.I moved cross-country to Ann Arbor just before the start of 2024, after what had been an eventful year. I was 5 months post-op bilateral mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction (breasts are reconstructed from abdominal tissue) for extensive but thankfully very early breast cancer. My family had pushed off our move because of the surgery and recovery time. While I had a wonderful physical therapist for post-surgery rehabilitation, I knew that if I were to ever feel good/strong again across my core and entire upper body, I would need more than stretching and scar tissue massage. I made a pact with my physical therapist that I would find a trainer in my new city, but I had no idea how to go about it. I had not been to a weight room in more than 20 years, since college, and found the thought of lifting at a gym (in front of people) incredibly intimidating. I had visions of bros grunting and kissing their jacked arms.AFS could not be more different. While there are certainly some jacked arms, there are ALL the arms, and everyone is running their own race. It is an incredibly supportive, warm, and inclusive environment. And it’s truly an experience that you are allowed to shape based upon your goals. I was matched with coach Chris Early who carefully listened to what I hoped to do (continue to heal and gain strength) as well as what worried me (getting hurt and messing up my recovery). Chris expertly crafted a program that was both fun and challenging. He was knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. Chris and all the coaches and trainers have a wonderful and humorous spirit about them that is contagious.I am almost 45 and wish I had committed to a weight training plan years ago. I would urge anyone reading this review to not wait for something as dramatic as surgery. But I’m doing it now and I am feeling stronger and better than I did even 10-15 years ago when I was probably at the height of my aerobic fitness and running half marathons. How that can happen in a mere four months’ time is a testament to the care and expertise that the AFS team puts into every detail. I can’t thank them and Chris enough!”

“Being from special operations I have enjoyed some top tier gyms but none of them come even close to Valor. The equipment, the staff, the aesthetic, the trainers, and even the music are the best you can find. I highly recommend this gym to anyone that takes their fitness seriously.”

“Been going to this gym for 6 mo-1 year. Gym is always super clean and well maintained. Equipment is functional and appears safe. Only thing that bothers me is how close together all of the machines are. It is a small space and getting all of the equipment in there was difficult I bet. Wish they had a plate loaded angled leg press.”

“Really nice, small but mighty class-based gym in West Ann Arbor.Really friendly community atmosphere, and beautifully decorated interior.I have been enjoying the yoga classes here for the past month. Many of the classes are during business hours, but some are after 5pm or before 8am.It follows that tends to be (mostly) a community of active retirees, but there is also a mix of younger people who attend classes. Everyone is super friendly and tries to learn your name and people often have conversations between or after class, so I think it would be a good place to make new friends in the community.I saw also they are running a special something like $100 for the month of July and August 2023- unlimited classes for NEW clients only. You might want to check with them to make sure I got that right, though!”

“Harmony in Motion is a cozy studio tucked away in the Pauline/Stadium neighborhood. I’ve been attending a yoga class here with Pam since September. I’m impressed with Pam’s ability to tailor the sequences to everyone’s ability. I have a knee that gives me trouble in some of the poses and Pam always offers modifications that allow me to keep going. All are welcome and if you are new to yoga this is an excellent place to start. It’s a friendly, welcoming community.”

“This is a very good gym. Parking is good but can get crowded during peak hours. The gym has a good variety of free weights and machine weights. They even have a trap bar. If you like dumb bell training, then you'll really like the selection here. There are plenty of cardio machines and treadmills. They're located near the basketball court and 2nd floor. The indoor track is good but can get crowded and difficult to jog during peak hours. Few of the walkers and joggers will abruptly stop on the track or a slower walker will be in the passing lane. In rare instances there will be a walker walking the opposite direction of traffic. The basketball court is nice. The court doesn't have too many slick spots and the rims and glass backboards are good. The out of bound lines are close to the walls so you gotta be careful when going full speed. The basketballs throughout the years have been mediocre. Some balls are warped, some are flat, some are slick, few are nice with good grip and aired up. I haven't seen many arguments on the court during pickup games. I think the staff controls that well. The court will sometimes split time for volleyball. The gym has two swimming pools, small and large with lanes, and an outdoor tennis court. I don't use either so I don't have much to say. The gym has group classes as well for additional cost. I don't attend so I don't have much to say. The men's locker room is pretty good. The gym stocks nice towels and the showers have soap. They also have lotion, mouth wash, cotton balls, hair spray, deodorant spray and q-tips. There are plenty of sinks and toilets. They have a sauna and whirlpool. The lockers have their own locks so there's no need to bring your own lock. The lockers sometimes get tied up. I think some of the guests are occupying lockers and not giving them up when they leave. I've noticed that recently. The cleaning staff used to open up all the lockers during closing but I haven't seen that practice in a while. They might still do it later at night. Overall, it's a very good gym. The price may be steep for some but it is a step up from a Planet Fitness.”

“University of Michigan's IM Gym is a newer gym that offers practical amenities for workouts and hosts engaging intramural sports. Though not lavish, it serves its purpose well. The equipment is well-maintained, and there's a good range of options for cardio and strength training. The gym is located conveniently on campus, the gym's accessibility adds to its appeal. It's easy to fit a workout into a busy schedule when the gym is right around the corner. Some of what sets it apart is the intramural sports program, offering diverse activities like Walleyball. Overall, Michigan University gym provides a solid fitness experience with enjoyable opportunities for friendly competition, complemented by its convenient location and welcoming staff. I do wish that they would eventually add an aquatic portion to this gym as I think that would very much elevate it to be competitive with other university gym's. That being said I made a lot of friends at the IM building in the four years that i got to spend at Michigan and the inviting atmosphere definitely played a part in that.GO BLUE”

“UPDATE - as of today they have reserved the pool on Monday Wednesday Friday from 9-10 am for Aqua Fit water aerobics with Lily!No lap swim during that time! Hooray and thank you!

We love their water aerobics every Monday Wednesday Friday with Lily - she’s an excellent instructor and there is a good group of people there for every class. Only improvement would be if they would reserve that hour for the class so we don’t have to argue with the occasional person who wants to lap swim at the same time. The front desk manager always favors the one occasional lap swimmer over the 15-20 dedicated class participants.

As a personal trainer, Suzie is excellent. We have made great improvements in strength and balance while working with her.”

“We've been members for ~5 years now, and we have always been very happy with what our membership provides. The classes are great and we have so much fun in both the indoor and outdoor pools with our children. Coming from paying for gym membership in a big city for something much smaller/less well-kept, we have always thought the fees to be quite fair for what we get.”

“Words can't describe the eternal joyous smile of Matt who works and also climbs here. I'm graced by the incomparable joy that radients from him anytime I step into the gym. Any slander sent towards this man will truly land on deaf ears. I'm honored to not only call him a worker I encourage anyone to go to help for but also a fellow climber. This also extends to the rest of the staff. They're stacked with an incredible team of long time and new climbers. Climbers I've climbed with before they started working there. You can truly see how these people's passion for climbing also extends to their work. You'll always leave with a smile of challenges conquered each day.”
