Pets Are Home
10414 Detrick Ave, KensingtonAfter a long day of Nasty attitudes at every pet appointment of the day I decided to get my pup a bone. When I tell you Pets Are Home was the Rainbow at the end of a storm. From the cleanliness to the staff being so helpful there’s absolutely nothing to complain about, let’s not forget the pricing being very reasonable. As I’ve gone other places and asked for help with certain things they’ve rudely told me to Google; not here though.
The owner was so kind to both me and my pup And helpful with all questions and also gave suggestions and gifted a few sample products. Thank you guys keep up the great work! Small business big heart!

Pet Grooming
Canine Design Inc
4226 Howard Ave, KensingtonI've always been given good service at this small business. The owner seems to genuinely care about dogs and the people who work there. Canine was recommended to me by my regular groomer who was retiring.
Update 2024: I recently took a K-9 Lifesavers foster to get cleaned up before an event, and they were careful to get what was needed done without overdoing it. Currently I have one of three litter mates (Sept. 2023) and the difference between two of them at an adoption event was stark.

Silver Spring Animal Hospital
10501 Metropolitan Ave, KensingtonI just had a really great experience with Silver Spring Animal Hospital and they'll now be my dog's primary provider. I've struggled with vet care for my 4-year old pup because she's so fearful and resistant. I found this practice through the Fear Free website, because the vets are certified fear-free, which means they've received training on how to calm down fearful dogs. They worked with me to get a good dose of calming drugs before the visit and they allowed me to stay in the room with her which was really important to me (I want to know how my dog reacts and I know my presence makes her feel better even if she was still uncomfortable). Dr. Benton and all the staff I met were really great and everything was clearly explained to me and they took the time to address all my questions.

Pet Sitting & Training
Paw by Paw Dog Training
5000 Nicholson Ct, KensingtonI have nothing but great things to say about Paw by Paw dog training. I spent 6+ months looking for the right dog training facility for my dog and they are it! My dog Bubba and I did the individual lessons with Rowan and he took the time to listen to my concerns and what I wanted to work on and also to let me know what he saw in my dog. Week after week he kept showing me that my dog had even more potential than what I saw in him and he has grown so much because of it. I am grateful for how much patience he showed and the time he took to make sure that Bubba was ready to graduate. I cannot recommend this place enough and will definitely be returning for more classes.

The K9 Class
4090 Howard Ave, KensingtonI have had dogs all my life but have not had a puppy for 20+ years. I recently retired and fulfilled a lifelong goal of owning a show prospect male Doberman. Reign is a wonderful dog, but he is a puppy with lots of energy. He is very strong and can be stubborn at times. Although he has been a quick learner, I needed help training him to walk without pulling as well as help with decreasing his reactivity. Ron Davidson was highly recommended by a good friend, and I cannot be more pleased. Ron is an excellent mentor. His demeanor is calm and never condescending. His love of dogs and his excellent teaching methods have been invaluable to me and Reign. We elected to have Ron come to our home and after just 5 sessions, the difference is night and day. Reign is now healing on his leash and when not healing does not pull me. He is more obedient, and both he and I are much happier and are finally enjoying our walks. I highly recommend the K9 class and Ron Davidson.

A Walk in the Park
KensingtonThe walker always send a nice note and picture. I don't worry about Foxy being home alone when I take a day trip. The walker also will do small extras like picking up the mail and bringing it in the house.

Blue Dog Boarding & Daycare
4101 Howard Ave, KensingtonThey took very good care of our dogs while they were boarded. The owner Janet is a lovely person who clearly cares deeply about animals. She went way above and beyond to help me with obtaining emergency medical care for my pet (not associated with boarding) while I was in the midst of a personal crisis. She is competent and responsible. You can trust your pets with Janet and Blue Dog Boarding.

Bamboo Café
4222 D, Howard Ave, KensingtonIt is a CRIME that this place isn't better known! On the Western side of Antiques Row in Kensington, on Howard Avenue - an industrial street lined with auto repair shops and antique stores lies this lone little eatery run by some absolutely sweet Hispanic ladies who sing in the kitchen and make some absolutely great food! The Bamboo Cafe' is a real blue collar, working class lunch eatery. No pretense. No nonsense. Just a hole in the wall with a solid menu for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner. Don't let the outside fool you. I was fortunate enough to wander in while my tires were being changed down the street. Maybe one of the more fortunate accidents I've ever had.
The menu is straight-forward. A mixture of Salvadoran and American foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Want breakfast? Eggs? Sausage? Bacon? Hash browns? Pancakes? French toast? Breakfast sandwiches? You're set! How about some fried plantains? Red beans? Tortillas? Tamales? Pupusas? No problem! Subs, burgers, wings, tacos, quesadillas, wings, fajitas, and carne asada all live peaceably next to each other on the menu. During lunch, much of this Salvadoran food is on a hot table and it can be dished up quickly for those on the run. I also noticed some items that weren't on the regular menu, like chicharron. It all smelled wonderful...and the prices were incredibly reasonable!
For my first visit to this place, I chose something very Salvadoran: Beef Soup (Sopa de Res) For anyone who has never had this, prepare for a REAL meal. Incredibly rich, clear, beefy broth with chunks of carrot, yuca, corn on the cob, green beans, plantain...and the most tender, braised beef short rib that you're likely to find anywhere. It's accompanied with a side of rice, jalapeno, and lime that can be added to the soup. Oh, yeah!! Also, two hot, fresh, thick corn tortillas! This is a SERIOUS meal! All for $10.99!
One more thing. There is often a tendency for non-Hispanics to avoid Salvadoran eateries. They often don't speak English or cater only to fellow Hispanics. Not the case here. While the majority of customers are Spanish-speaking, the management speaks wonderful English and the very sweet ladies are extremely hospitable and nice. That's why I saw folks of every race (including many from neighboring businesses) crowding in for lunch. So, don't be shy. The food and the friendliness here are first rate!
