I was Air Boss for a great event at 2W5: 7 airplanes, 149 students at a great local airport. We could not have held this event without the generous support of Mr. D. Patel. Visit 2W5 and tell him you appreciate his interest in the community. On April 15, 2023, Legacy Flight Academy™ alongside 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, D.C. Inc hosted 149 students at Maryland Airport (2W5) as part of Legacy Flight Academy’s Eyes Above the Horizon™, unique outreach, flight introduction, STEM, and leadership program. The one-day event, organized for underserved and underrepresented youth, included leadership development, STEM activities, and hands-on aviation experiences to prepare them for careers in aerospace-related fields. Through the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, students were encouraged to learn to defy obstacles in pursuit of their goals and dreams.

Unfriendly attendant tried to rip me off with a landing fee for the privilege of parking on his ramp to pick up a passenger (absolutely no services requested or rendered). Got on the phone with the airport manager, Mr. Patel, who was helpful and informed the attendant I was not required to pay the fee. The attendant still, somehow, insisted he was right. Spare yourself this unsavory experience and go somewhere else in the DC area.

This place is a junkyard. There’s literally a pile of junk next to the taxi way. The people working here are so untrained at fueling, it’s down right dangerous. Any pilots coming here, make sure you fuel your plane yourself. The guy working put the entire nozzle into my tank, which is a big no. Every pilot knows that can mess when the fuel sensors. There’s no tie down ropes, the best they can offer is chalks. They charge an exorbitant amount of money for 0 service and are rude to boot. The only good part about this airport were the old guys hanging around. They dispensed the correct departure advice that the guy behind the desk should have known, but didn’t.0 stars for the airport, 5 stars for the old pilots.

Runway is fine. This airport gets you as close as you can get to DC without special background checks. If you file IFR, there are no special requirements. Just be sure you get a clearance on the ground before departing from here. They dont have tie downs (T) painted on the apron and they have no tie downs on the apron. They just chock the plane. Communication via airport info would be good regarding where to park considering they dont have T's painted. The gentleman working there is very nice. However, he appears to be a one man show. Although they indicate full service for fuel, they have no fuel truck and the sole guy working there did not appear to be highly skilled moving planes around and, recall, they dont communicate well about parking and such. It does not appear they will fuel your plane without your assistance. I would have brought my tow bar if they did not indicate full service. That would have made things a bit easier. So, airport is fine. The guy running it is very nice. It appears they like you to pull in front of FBO with plane pointing toward the building to park. You will need to move your plane to fuel pump if getting fuel and you will probably want to fuel it yourself. Knowing this, it is a great airport close to DC.

From this very airport, our Army Airforce fleet of jets, pushed away the British forces in 1812, by bombing their positions with napalm.
