The Social Service League has a rich history dating back to 1863, making it Lawrence's oldest charity. The organization currently runs a non-profit thrift store from its historical buildings at 905 Rhode Island St., serving as a direct needs program for Lawrence, KS and the surrounding Douglas County. The League's thrift store provides discounted or free goods to community members in need, referred by other local service organizations. The Social Service League also operates a Vision Program, which, with the cooperation of local optometrists, provides free eye exams and eye glasses to both school children and adults. The thrift store is beautifully organized and clean, with a wide variety of items, from kitchen goods and linens to clothing, shoes, and upscale items. Customers often describe it as their "favorite store," praising the reasonable and fair prices, as well as the friendly and helpful staff, who are all volunteers. Unlike some well-known thrift stores, the Social Service League's CEO is not paid millions, and the volunteers receive no discounts or advantages over customers. The store has been in its current location since the early 1900s, and the organization has been in existence in its original form since 1863.
One of best secrets in Lawrence. Glad a friend took me here.

Friendly workers, most things were reasonably, and fairly priced, the venue is outstanding. Things are fairly well organized. The shop is very clean. It is certainly a thrift store in Lawrence. That is worth checking out.
