“Just moved to the valley and so happy to find our forever home. I prefer to shop local and discovered Avant Garden. Purchased a whimsical piece of local art from owner, co owner, Jeffrey. Received such a warm welcome and delighted in the beautiful merchandising and assortment created in tandem with his wife Randy. I will be back.”

“Adorable store, BUT make sure you have cash because they won’t let you purchase anything with a card if it’s below $10 (yes, even a Debit card which typically isn’t allowed to have a purchase minimum… google it!)”

“The owner told me that she has been living in Monterey for 25 years and plans to move to the east coast to be closer with her children and grandchildren. I wish her good fortune with the big move ?It was wonderful to shop here before the store closes. I purchased some jewlery for my mom's 60th birthday coming up. The pieces were created by an artist who lives in Northern California. Also, I purchased a matcha tea set, white porcelain tea pot, and a set of 5 tea cups for loose leaf.”

“A perfect place to find local goods, candles, cards, pottery, jewelry and so much more. It’s one of my goals to find the local places in a city so I’m so glad I found this place”

“A beautifully curated shop! Pricey but a fabulous range of things to beautify and decorate your home, or give as gifts. One of the nicer and diverse shops in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Make sure to swing by the lower level part of the shop where more products are located! I came during the holidays (on Boxing Day) and it was PACKED. Sale items were limited and placed all at the front of the shopeli. Staff are pretty laid back and hang behind the counter mostly, and will service when engaged.”

“I had a delightful visit. The owner shared the story of the products and the people who made them. I left the store knowing I would be back one day. Maybe on Monday?”

“I've been meaning to, and trying to, come to this store for quite awhile and finally made it. I came primarily because of the bulk shampoo, etc, but knew I would likely be tempted by other products as well. Yup! I love this little shop. It supports a good organization, the service was stellar, and everything feels artisanal and is ethically-sourced. It's a great place for buying liquids like detergent, soap, shampoo, conditioner and hand sanitizer in whatever quantity you need, and they sell containers as well (mostly glass). I'm definitely memory-filing it for gifts, too!”

“Love their earl grey tea! Customer service is amazing and shipping was fast for me but I live in San Jose so that’s probably why. I mentioned that the tea was a present and they were kind enough to send me a lil gift bag and yellow tissue. Wish I could buy larger containers of tea or there was a store that sells their products nearby.”

“Tides is a wonderful place to discover beautiful seashore items in a very welcoming atmosphere. The ocean-themed merchandise is carefully selected by charming and friendly store owner, Barby Deane. This shop relocated in 2017 from Lighthouse to 216 Forest Avenue, just a few blocks away and WELL worth rediscovering. It's a perfect place to stop while enjoying an afternoon stroll through Pacific Grove. ENJOY!!”

“WOW! Amazing lanterns and so many eye-catching items in this store. Yes, it is very expensive, but we are sure their rent is high also. Definitely a lot of "eye-candy" in here! Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!”

“They have a furnishings store as well as a small separate gazebo with handbags and face masks. My wife and I had breakfast next door at Stationæry and peeked through the store windows since they had not opened yet, and made it a point to return an hour later to check it out inside. We loved everything we saw from the face mask, hand bags, rugs, quilts, and all sorts of textiles hanging from the wall. They also carry products that look artisanal like soaps, leather accessories, essential oils. The Japanese lady and English gentleman inside were kind and informative about their products and not overly assertive. We ended up purchasing a quilt for our bed that was hand made by their friend Ondi in the Kahdi style in India. What’s even more special is that all the pieces from the quilt were scraps from other apparel pieces, cushion covers, and the like. The quilt has beautiful wood block printed patterns in indigo dye. I think it’ll be great for the warmer seasons, and a definite centerpiece. I will update this post with photos once we have it set in our bedroom.”

“This shop was one of the few places that really attracted my attention when it came to interesting merchandise. I just love browsing a store that has a lot of variety with an international flare. A variety of eye catching clothing in lovely styles and colors. Spending time to explore is a must! You'll find singing bowls, drums, jewelry, cultural nick knacks, decorative items for the home, wind chimes, statuary, art work, rocks & crystals. The whole shop is filled with items from top to bottom. I would have loved to make several purchases, but the only downside for me, was that everything was too pricey! I'm a tourist on a budget, and I know that I can get many of these items much cheaper back home!”

“If you want a memory of Monterey, this is the place to get it. They have metalwork, glass, clothes, stuffed animals, woodwork, and more. All high quality, supporting the aquarium, and some items even support other causes. Look for the tags and the markers as they will give you a lot of information on where your money is going.”

“The best place in the world for clothing and accessories for those of us that are not into traditional wear. The prices are appropriate in my opinion. I purchased a couple of rings, shirts and oil. I will definitely be going back every time I visit Monterey!”

“A cute store full of antiques and literary treasures! It's located right behind the Cottage of Sweets. This is a great shop for collectors and anyone who loves Jane Austen novels or Alice in Wonderland. They have a large variety of first editions of class novels, as well as collectibles, tea sets, and more. Love the vintage themes and aesthetic. Definitely a cute place to drop by for any bookworms out there!”

“This shop says everything you need to know in the name lol. They have sea otter shirts. In my opinion, way cuter souvenirs than the aquarium itself. Really love the Harry Otter stuff, it is frankly hilarious and adorable”

“We went in after I saw beautiful My Melody and Kuromi plushies in the window. They have really affordable prices and I can't wait to go back once we're in the area again! The plushies are so soft and the prices are great considering they're Sanrio. They also have pokemon, BT21, and other character plushies.”

“I wanted to find a little starfish necklace to remember my trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea. I walked in here and boy do they have a lot of jewelry. The sales person was nice. If you pay in cash, I think there's a small discount. Lots of fun trinkets and things. I found a nice and simple starfish that was encrusted with rhinestones. Perfect! Inexpensive. I just love finding jewelry like this. Easy to pack and gives you good memories each time you wear it.”

“Wide selection of Monterey Bay souvenirs for yourself or gifts for your family and friends. The store’s color palette just caught me. White & cyan are my two favorite colors and they display them at the front door. It’s like a venus flytrap plant and I, being the bug, walked right into their trap :))A lot of items are very cheap, but some could also be on the pricey side. It depends on your preferences. If you’re happy with what they offer, all is good. If not, there are tons of other gift shops in the area.”

“Harbor House was the first gift store I visited on Old Fisherman's Wharf street. Visitors can conveniently explore the Monterey Downtown area using the free tourist bus. The street offers a variety of shopping stores and fresh seafood restaurants, making it a busy but walkable and enjoyable experience. If you're planning to visit Monterey Bay, I highly recommend checking out this store!”

“Peterson has a lifetime of experience and his store-before his semi-retirement-reflects that in his one of a kind pieces to go along with his one of a kind personality. He does not suffer fools lightly reflecting some of his reviews here, but if you are straight up with him he is more than straight up with you. If you are a tourist seeking a bargain, this is not the store for you.”
