Brian was so kind to my mom - who is getting on in years and has vision problems - and walked her through finding just the right food for her finicky emotional support cat.
Bernal Beast always has great window decor and just feels like a friend in the neighborhood.
Classes to keep pets happy and healthy, too!!

Showtime Grooming
1929 Hyde St, San FranciscoThis was the best experience I've had with a groomer in the City.
From the first conversation on the phone, I was sold on bringing in our toy poodle, whose hair has been butchered all around San Francisco in the last two years. Bernard (the owner) was knowledgeable, passionate, and reassuring, so we gave it a shot. I'm SO glad we did.
The atmosphere was inviting and the crew welcomed us warmly. Time was taken to thoroughly discuss the cut and expectations, which I appreciated. Our girl was matted, so I knew it would be more than just a bath and shape, but she was finished well within the timeframe discussed.
We can always tell when our dog has been traumatized by a grooming, but she returned to us a bouncing, prancing happy little princess with the most adorable cut ever! The muzzle was a little long, though, so we gave her back and Bernard oversaw the redo until it was done to perfection.
Wow... what an amazing experience. I walked out a loyal customer. I'm so grateful to have a place to take her now that I can count on for quality work and a wonderful experience. I wholeheartedly endorse this business and hope they stay around for a long time.
Thank you, Showtime Grooming!

Kent's Kanines
3450 Sacramento St #310, San FranciscoDeborah has been hand stripping our Norwich Terrier for the last five years. I was desperate to find a new groomer after a bad experience when Gus was a puppy. After extensive research, I was lucky to come across Kent's Kanines. Deborah and I had a long phone conversation regarding Gus's first grooming experience where the groomer had muzzled Gus. He was traumatized. Deborah's approach to Gus was measured, calm and comforting. He was a little wonky on the table at first, but after a few grooming sessions, he figured it out, with Deborah's guidance. Gus looks forward to Deborah's visits, which really says a lot. We appreciate her patience and skill with Gus. We LOVE that she comes to our home. It's a great environment for grooming, Gus feels comfortable and there are no other groomers/dogs making him anxious. Highly recommend Kent's Kanines for your dog grooming needs!

Avenues Pet Hospital
2221 Taraval St, San FranciscoMy dog has been in the care of Avenues Pet Hospital for 3 years now. It can sometimes take a while to be seen for non-urgent stuff, such as the very first new client appointment and the annual exam, but otherwise my dog gets seen quite quickly as things come up (usually within a few days, and via email or phone when I have concerns but am not sure if they are worth an appointment). They did not allow people inside for a long while due to Covid safety restrictions, but we can now go inside to wait in the waiting room, and accompany our pets during their appointment. It seems silly for other reviews to complain about this when it was for a valid reason and not an arbitrary policy. The only times I can't accompany my dog is when he comes in for his regular nail trim and gland expression as an out-patient - this is done in the back where pet owners aren't allowed. FYI I get his nails done at the vet bc he has particularly long blood vessels / quicks in his nails, so I feel safer about it being done here, even though it's a roughly-done trim and I file them smooth at home. The vets are kind and I always feel like I'm getting their honest assessment. Front desk is also always very helpful. For reviews that mention they're rude - it can depend on the person tbh, but if anything I think some can be less warm than others, and I would *not* say at all that they've ever been rude. I think they're really busy nonstop and are doing their best to get through patients in an efficient manner -- and that can sometimes be interpreted as being a little cold, when really it's just being neutral. As a society we tend to think women are "cold" when they're not overly warm and are otherwise just being normal & neutral, yet don't think that of men doing the same. So let's check our gender bias, alright? One word of advice that I learned the hard way - most medications are substantially cheaper at Chewy or Costco, so ask them to send out the prescription! The vet office has zero problem doing that and it's never awkward. It's not a perfect system since Costco doesn't have everything, and Chewy takes some days for delivery (i.e., doesn't work for meds needed the same day). I don't say this as a knock against the hospital, as I think this is common practice for vets and helps keep the lights on. I instead say this as a heads up, because I didn't know this for the longest time.

Top Dog SF
2121 Taraval St, San FranciscoFive months ago, I rescued a 10-month-old Great Dane who had a traumatic and limited start to her life. She was already quite large at 100 pounds (she weighs 125 pounds today) and, understandably, terribly anxious. We live on California Ave, right in the heart of Nob Hill, and I can honestly say: until I saw the world through her eyes, I had no idea how chaotic the streets and parks of San Francisco are—they are too chaotic for many rescues. What made matters even worse was that our dog was afraid of other dogs—terrified, in fact.
Trapped in our apartment with my large and very timid new best friend, I reached out to Natalie and Top-Dog for help: we needed a safe place for our rescue to get some exercise without other barking dogs, people, or anything else. Natalie was amazing, enabling us to use her facilities with no other dogs present. It was nothing short of huge for our rescue. She had an opportunity to run and play in an environment where she felt safe. Exercise is so important for dog happiness and good behavior.
Top-Dog has two great facilities, one in San Francisco and another a 30-minute drive south in Montara. The San Francisco location has a nice, clean, well-maintained yard, where they practice great doggie hygiene and ensure all dogs in the facility are healthy and stay that way. The Montara ranch is an amazing location: it is huge, at least 4 acres in two large fenced-in runs, all grass and very well maintained, without a single foxtail to be seen. We have utilized both locations continuously over the last five months, allowing our dog to get some real exercise.
Top-Dog's help and support with our rescue have been instrumental. Natalie is amazing, and her thoughtful and conscientious team runs some great facilities.

It's always so nice to come back home to a tired, happy pup! It was clear from the get go the care that they have for their dogs. They first vet your pup to see if they would match the team's pack and if your pup have pack gravity, which is especially important for the unleashed walks. Sometimes the best part of my day are the photos/videos that are sent from the walkers! The pups are always on adventure at the park or the beach. It's clear that Toby adores the team and it makes me happy to see my pup happy! Thanks team! Shout out to Shannon, Evan, Kayla, and Wes!

True Training 101
355 Serrano Dr, San FranciscoWe rescued our two little dogs 6 years ago and they were good with people and other dogs, but after the lockdown, our Molly became aggressive with visitors to our home and out walking. Cyd came into our home to hear two barking, crazy dogs in their very large big bed (a pink cage); Cyd ignored them, sat down on the floor in front of the cage and we talked while they continued loudly saying they didn't want Cyd there. She threw healthy treats every so often and they calmed down. Molly learned how to walk without charging at other people and dogs and I learned how to help her calm down; Cyd was wonderful, explained everything we were doing and loves and understands dogs and how to help owners understand their dogs.

SmartyPup!
3119 Vicente St, San FranciscoSmartyPup! is the greatest place for puppies in the Bay Area. We've sent two puppies through the Puppy Play School, and I can't say enough nice things about how amazing the experience has been. The first dog we sent through the program turned out to be the best dog we have ever known, and now our second puppy is showing signs that he'll turn out the same. We're now at the end of our play school session, and I'd almost consider getting another puppy just so that we could just keep going to Smarty Pup! It's just that good. Enzo has learned good manners with us, other people, and all sorts of dogs. Now that he has had all of his vaccinations, when we take him for walks in the city and around the Bay Area, he's calm and receptive in all situations, and everyone remarks on what an excellent disposition he has. I know every dog has their own disposition, but we credit a lot of what a great dog Enzo is becoming to SmartyPup! If you want a really amazing experience and you're willing to invest in the best friend you'll ever have, bring your dog to SmartyPup!

Better Nature Dog Training
Attn: Jeff stallings, 1334C Kobbe Ave, San FranciscoJeff helped us so much! We adopted our dog, Ted, from the SPCA in June, and he was very fearful. He was afraid of going on walks, he wouldn't let us put collars, harnesses, or leashes on him, he would bark like crazy if we had any guests come into our apartment, and he wasn't housetrained. We had one zoom session and 3 in-person sessions with Jeff, and now Ted is about 98% housetrained, has no problem with guests, and he loves walks! He used to hide, growl, and snap when we tried to put the leash on him, and we weren't able to walk him at all for the first two months we had him, but now he actually gets excited when we get the leash out! Jeff gave us excellent advice throughout the whole process and we couldn't have done it without him.

Limoncello
52 Grove St, San FranciscoAwesome new vendor in the kiosk that used to be Bi-Rite in the Civic Center Plaza (pre-pandemic). I've had 4 things here (napolitano, caprese and veggie sandwiches and beet salad) and they've all been fresh and delicious with a generous serving. The bread they use is soft and yummy, not too "bready" with a good bread:fillings ratio. My main critique is the pricing, which -- while in line with SF prices -- isn't going to be accessible to most of the local residents of the TL/SOMA. The gelato pricing starts at $5.99. With a playground right behind the kiosk, it would be nice if the prices were lower so a family of 4 wouldn't have to pay almost $25 to get ice cream on a nice day.

It's a super small store with a wonderful smell and the freshest food. We ordered the reuben, which was gigantic in size, and was appetizing to not only the mouth but the eyes as well. It was hot, with soft pillowy bread and a crispy exterior, with lots and lots of pastrami, being super generous with the ingredients.

Jasmin's
809 Bush St, San FranciscoHow often do you find food at these prices in the city?! $10-20 for burgers, fries, teriyaki, chicken Sammie's, etc Quick, not fussy, great staff, well lit and for the neighborhood incredibly affordable. For anyone shopping downtown or heading up to the Fairmont to see the fancy lobby, this is a welcome spot to get a meal and a break. I'm bookmarking this for the next time I'm over here

Crostini & Java
899 Hyde St, San FranciscoWe ordered an iced mocha, green berets smoothie, banana chocolate walnut bread, ultimate breakfast sandwich with ham, and croissant sandwich with egg, bacon, and cheese (minus the sauce). Everything was made to order, the taste of mocha strong in the coffee beverage, great banana flavor in the smoothie, the sandwiches with ample ingredients and delish, and the banana walnut bread full of chocolatey goodness in every bite. This sweet and crumbly slice of bread was served right away, from the display case. And the wait for the rest of our order was 20 minutes, which isn't bad for New Year's Day, at least they were open during the holiday. Seating wasn't hard to find, both indoors and outside, even with the place being tiny. And staff was professional and friendly, and apologetic about the wait time.

Butter&
690 Indiana St, San FranciscoI was introduced to this cake shop by my sister in law. She brought over one of the cakes for a housewarming party and I was hooked. The cakes are so beautiful as they are delicious. They come in a few different sizes and pick up the small size for a little treat. The ingredients are very good and, you don't have the guilt of eating something that is loaded with ingredients you can't even pronounce. The staff is always friendly and the ambiance is great. They are always so sweet to pack me a pastry bag of ice since I have to drive a bit back home.

Tala Wine
4625 Mission St, San FranciscoTala Wine has quickly become a neighborhood favorite. I've met more Excelsior residents in the past few months than I've met in the many years that I have lived here. So happy this has opened up here! Wonderful wine (and a great beer selection), delicious food (there are different pop ups each week, sometimes multiple times in one week) and great company.

San Francisco Animal Care & Control
1419 Bryant St, San FranciscoWe went to SF Animal Care & Control today hoping we could visit some adoptable cats. We looked around the facility. The first thing we saw was the cleanliness of the facility. The facility itself is very clean! We met the kittens that we found on their website. They are absolutely adorable!!! When we were about to leave the room, we met Jacques who is a volunteer at the facility. Jacques is one of a kind. He was soooooo friendly and very welcoming!!! We spent so much time chatting about so many certain stuffs that we have had in common. He introduced us to the kittens. He gave us so much advice too. We spent time getting to know the kittens and played with them! His service is exceptional. We love him and his hospitality. How many chances that you would meet someone whom you never met before and
ended up being friends within 2 hours? I think it is less but we made it! We were so lucky! Thank you Jacques for making our visit journey so memorable :))
