Paco Collars
2905 Shattuck Ave., BerkeleyI bought a Paco Collar for my now 13 year old dobermann girl before she was even born. One of the jewels came off and without hesitation they sent me, not one, but a whole pack of replacements. Not one has fallen off since. Bear in mind, I live in the UK. The collar is still going strong and will be handed down to the new boy, for hopefully another 13 years

Open Paw
129 Tamalpais Rd, Berkeley"Open Paw - Good Habits Are Hard to Break." This review is based on attendance at several lectures by Open Paw speakers as well as direct experience with the Open Paw program and the programs founders. (BTW, while I love cats, I own 3 dogs and work with dogs on a daily basis. My bias therefore, leads me to write about dogs.) Open Paw is a multi-faceted approach to making companion pets (more) adoptable, educating pet owners (preferably before an adoption), and keeping pets in the home once they are adopted. When the Open Paw program is employed at the animal shelter level, staff, volunteers and visitors to the shelter are encouraged to feed the dogs part of their daily food ration for displaying appropriate behavior (sitting quietly instead of barking and lunging) at the front of the kennel. The dogs get lots of repetition for this appropriate behavior throughout the day and dogs that are shy or aggressive around people learn that the approach of strangers is a good thing - this is how they get their dinner! Special care is also given in the Open Paw program to teach and maintain housebreaking by ensuring that the shelter dogs get adequate time out of the kennel - housebroken dogs shouldn't be forced to soil their kennel. (In most shelter situations, the mental and physical health of the dogs is constantly deteriorating. Constant barking, lack of physical exercise and mental stimulation as well as inadequate levels of staff and volunteers to get the dogs out frequently enough - these are the ingredients for doggie stress and deterioration found in most shelters.) In and out of the shelters, Open Paw strives to educate prospective pet owners BEFORE they adopt. Far too many dogs are returned to shelters because the new owners don't have realistic expectations of their new companion and they don't know how to resolve insanely simple problems. Post-adoption, Open Paw continues its efforts to educate pet owners and handlers with the goal of keeping the new pet in the home for a lifetime. In addition to a vast amount of resources available on the website, Open Paw also offers - for free - a electronic (pdf) file of "Before You Get Your Puppy", by Dr. Ian Dunbar. (Dunbar - a very well known and respected veterinarian, animal behaviorist, dog trainer, and writer - revolutionized the dog training world when he opened "Sirius Puppy Training". He is also the founder of Open Paw.) The Open Paw program and what it strives for is nothing short of brilliant. The priceless information is appropriate for anyone who might come into contact with domesticated animals. Pet lovers, owners, the general public as well as people that don't like pets - all would benefit from OU (Open Paw University). Check it out, get educated & gain some knowledge about our fuzzy friends! This is pure win-win-win!

Healthy Spot
1510 Walnut St, BerkeleyHealthy Spot is my primary go to spot for food, snacks, bones and holistic supplements. Dianne's like the MVP all day, every day over there in the Berkeley store. Her depth of knowledge crosses many different product sets and services. She is extremely versed in holistic supplements for a dog's overall health, physical and mental well-being. She has recommended game changing holistic supplements that I've integrated into my dog's daily life. For my 5yr old American Bully, HeiHei's pain management program allows him to lead a thriving & healthy lifestyle. HeiHei is on a monthly holistic supplements of Standard Process (Ligaplex II, Musculoskeletal, & Boswellia Complex), Connectin and Bixbi joint mushroom powder for my dog's hip, knee, joint dysplasia & osteoarthritis, that he was born with. He's my lovable lemon. Because of Dianne, I also felt comfortable putting HeiHei on a raw food diet of frozen duck necks, chicken and turkey necks which has kept him lean and fit for an 80 lb. large size dog. For treats, they have a huge selection of high-quality snacks. HeiHei's favorites are bone broth, long gullet sticks, beef taffy long sticks, massive tendon bones, generous freeze-dried options like duck & chicken necks, Stack that Cheddar & Gouda, etc. Your dog will live longer knowing Dianne and Healthy Spot Berkeley. You're welcome.

Healthy Spot
3206 College Ave, BerkeleyMy favorite dog groomers! They’re friendly, patient and gentle with my two dogs. We have a 12 yr old arthritic Sheppard who loves to be groomed but his back legs are very sensitive. They are patient with him and ensure he’s comfy. Our frenchie hates being groomed and trembles the entire time but they pet her and ensure she’s comfortable through the service.

Pet Care
Campus Veterinary Clinic
1807 Martin Luther King Jr Way, BerkeleyI have one angry cat who hates everyone but me and a super nervous cat who is terrified of everyone but me. Both are seniors, and taking them to the vet was always a high stress event for everyone. Dr. Lee and the staff at Campus Vet have made the experience so much easier. They are patient and understanding and take incredible care of my kitties. I've been impressed with how transparent they are up front about costs, their unending patience with my terror cat. 10/10 would recommend.

Pal of the Paw
2326 1/2, Tenth St, BerkeleyWhen we relocated to Berkeley, California, finding a reliable dog walker service for our rescue Aussie Pan was paramount. A quick ‘dog walker Berkeley’ Google search led us to this gem - Pal of the Paw. Not only do they provide exceptional dog walking, but they also offer pet sitting services for those unexpected trips. Pans tail wags at the sight of her walker—she’s made a new best friend! It’s a joy to witness. Don’t hesitate, tap on their Google My Business page now for peace of mind knowing your pup is in good hands.

Bravo!Pup
941 The Alameda, BerkeleyHighly recommend Sandi, her assistant Leslie, and everyone else in the organization. Just finished Pup 1 and looking forward to next level. Walter (the puppy) is a little rowdy and easily distracted. Sandi took the time and assured us he'll grow up and pay attention. We never felt as if we were not doing something properly, or Walter was a doofus. Her patience and ability to get any puppy/dog to do a behavior in less than 5 minutes is amazing. It's clear she knows her stuff and has been training dogs for years. The homework we received was great and very helpful. High quality, positive reinforcement training all dog owners should consider.

The Barkmont
2730 San Pablo Ave, BerkeleyWe truly consider the Barkmont part of our dogs family. I am so thankful to have a group we can trust when we go out of town to take care of our dog. She always runs right into the door when we drop her off and comes home exhausted from all the fun she has. They are very communicative about policy changes and we respect their choices they make to keep our dog safe. With the increase in kennel cough this winter we were nervous boarding her but they assured us they were consulting with vets and made decisions to protect our pup. We really like that we can see the dogs playing during the day on the webcam and that they also seem to make good decisions about when to put them in quiet time to nap. Our dog does often come home smelly from all the playing, but we've just started adding on a bath to her reservation and she comes home smelling fresh and ready for a long nap. When we have had issues where our travel plans are delayed they are very accommodating and kind and let us pick up later than we expected to. It's just so much less stress knowing we have this understanding group of amazing people taking care of our dog when we are gone.Truly love the Barkmont and so thankful we found them.

Belmo Café
1160 University Ave, BerkeleySuch an amazing unassuming bakery full of delicious decadence. All the French and Algerian pastries are so beautiful but the flavor of the Turkish delights are beyond good!! The chai latte was the best I've had and the Turkish coffee is strong and good. If you're in the area I definitely recommended supporting this family run small business.

Afghan Burrito
2309 San Pablo Ave, BerkeleyLet's get straight to business... how was the food? 10/10. I got the Golden Burrito with steak. It was amazing! I let the staff know it was our first time trying it and they went into detail of how to enjoy it best with the different sauces they have available. It's also in a good safe part of town and provides clean indoor seating. Definitely coming here more often to try different items on the menu.

Tanzie's
1453 Dwight Way, BerkeleyOur neighborhood finally has a new gem of a restaurant! Everything about this spot is wonderful. The attention to detail in the decor (cozy fireplace, exposed brick, distressed woodwork, leaf-shaped cushions, gold silverware, plants galore) is transportive. The food is ravishingly fresh and thoughtfully prepared. On two different visits, we shared Market Salads, Chia Bowls, Yogurt Bowls, and Lava Eggs. Tanzie, the owner, is delightful, and you can tell she has a hand in every dish. My 8-year-old, who is a very picky eater, loved the yogurt bowl, eggs, and especially the Thai Beignets! Finally, a brunch I can look forward to, a few steps from my house...

Creekwood Restaurant
3121 Sacramento St, BerkeleyImportant news flash: they do BRUNCH in addition to incredible dinners. I could write a whole post on how amazing and lovely this is as a date spot for dinner and how much I freaking love their salads and gluten free pizzas (possibly my favorite one in the bay), but this is about brunch. We had no idea they did brunch and when we looked at the menu for it online, it didn’t list any mains. But we went anyway and were blown away. I’m adding a pic of the actual brunch menu so you can see the real selection offered.Y’all, they have a BREAKFAST PIZZA and I promise it’s even better than you would imagine. Do you like breakfast? Do you like pizza? This is a heavenly chimera of two of life’s greatest joys.?? Don’t sleep on the brunch! But also the perfect date spot. Get yourself a restaurant that can do both, and support local. The owner was there during our visit and went out of his way to create an excellent experience. Also, the patio is very dog friendly ?Dietary restrictions: The best gluten free pizzas in the area
