“This is wild, but when I was really little in 1962 or so, I lived in this house!

I’ve got photos from about 1962-1965? sitting on the flagstone driveway, and various shots in the yard with the exterior which still looks identical!

Anyhow, it was the most wonderful house my mom ever lived in, and she regretted ever selling. But she was a realtor and knew the 210 was going to be coming in (some of the back yard was lost to make room for a road) so we moved to La Canada a few years after moving into this house.

Looking at these photographs I’m reminded like it was yesterday of the leaded glass windows , the exposed timber on the outside and the flagstone (does it still have the flagstone driveway?) I remembered The staircase used to have wooden rails though, and my brother used to slide me in a cardboard box upstairs, making sure i wouldn’t crash down the stairs, and call it Mr Toads Wild Ride! He also used to sell his friends sodas (it had a soda fountain) and elevator rides for five cents.

My sister bred German Shepherds and Belgian Tervuren, and created her kennel name from this property. The original gates were gigantic, and they had “Sunny Gables” on them. So her kennel names were always the dog’s name, then “...of Sunny Gables”. If you stuck with me for this long, thank you for letting me vent some amazing childhood memories LOL.

(I later added this after someone posted it was haunted) Mom told me about the former owner being the world’s leading expert on hummingbirds, and apparently there was a huge hummingbird display in the basement. I don’t remember anyone in the family being afraid of it being haunted, I think that’s hype.

Nearly 60 years later, I’ve ended up with two heavy handmade wooden cabinets with drawers, two of the original 1930 kitchen cabinets! The fact mom hauled these heavy cabinets through three moves means she loved that last bit of Flintridge house, I think this was a touchstone to those days for her. For that reason, I’ll keep them up and pass them on some day myself. They are sort of cool, the huge drawers are lined with metal, that is what they did back in the day for their flour and sugar and rice, to keep the rodents and bugs out.

OK thank you for reading along with me here! I have lived in the northwest for 40 years but next time I’m in Southern California I’m going to go see this house! I know my mom is happy looking down and seeing this house kept as the showcase she always loved. She used to host huge parties, and was absolutely in her element in that house. Mom was never truly happy after they moved, not happy like she was when she lived in the Flintridge house. Thank you to the owners who are taking such wonderful care of Helen’s House!!”

“My friend is a member and invited me to a round of golf and it was a spectacular course.

As an amateur enthusiast golfer, It was a very challenging course with excellent views and the greens were well maintained. The golf carts were great, even has Bluetooth enabled to pair your phone and play music through the golf carts speakers which is a nice touch. The navigation was also clutch. Definitely a course for golf lovers.

Customer service was excellent overall and we really enjoyed a day of golfing and capped it off with lunch at their club house restaurant. Delicious food overall and a great way to end a long day of swing clubs.

I’d definitely come back again and consider a membership and the long future.”
