Inside Pet Food Express, 1095 Monroe St, Albany“Today was my new puppy and mines FIRST time using the Pet Wash station at this location and I just want to start by saying the customer Service I received today from Ashley was one for the books. She helped me figure out the shampoo and water hoses. My dog was new to the whole bath situation so he was acting a bit naughty and she came right to my rescue with treats in hand and entertained him so I could finish his bath. She was beyond helpful and just so friendly and nice. I will now be making this my new " home " pet wash place and hope to see her again. Really happy with the service I received today. If I could give 10 stars I would . Thank you again! I hope this review gets seen! She deserves a lot of credit. At least this old lady thinks so!”
“I have a pup with pancreatitis and most lower fat treats she refuses but luckily mishka’s turkey cake is very low fat and my dog is obsessed with the cakes and so am I. The cakes are absolutely beautiful and there are always fun new shapes with different seasons and holidays. The staff is also always so friendly and helpful. Mishka is a must go to if you have a pup in the Bay Area.”
“5 Elements is an amazing dog food company that has completely transformed my senior dog's life. Sharon, the owner of 5 Elements is all about serving animals and genuinely caring about their health. It's so refreshing to come across a company where the owner's passion shines through in every aspect. You can just feel the love and dedication she puts into her products.Norma and Ali, the store staff at 5 Elements are just as fantastic! They really take the time to get to know your pet's health issues. Whenever I swing by, they sit down with me and listen attentively to my concerns. They're like pet nutrition gurus, I tell you! Their knowledge and expertise are top-notch, and their personalized recommendations have made a world of difference in my senior dog's overall well-being.I swear that Elle is living longer just so she can get more broth, frozen yogurts, and treats from 5 Elements. They've formulated special meals for geriatric dogs like mine. The ingredients they use are carefully selected, and they really understand the specific needs of senior dogs. Since incorporating their bone broth, Elle has seen a remarkable improvement in her health. I can't thank 5 Elements enough for the positive impact they've had on her well-being.And 5 Elements isn't just your average pet food store—it's a real community of pet lovers who support each other. I've met some incredible people here. We chat about our pets' health, share advice, and swap heartwarming stories. It's like a home away from home, filled with folks who truly care. The atmosphere Sharon has created is simply amazing. In a sea of generic options, 5 Elements understands that aging pups have unique needs, and they've crafted specialized meals just for them.”

3868 Piedmont Ave, Oakland“Their business model is Customer First. Emoyees are knowledgeable. Easy returns/exchanges - though I never have returned anything because their staff always points me in the right direction.”
“Discovering Maxwell's Pet Bar about a year ago has been a game-changer for our 12-year-old dog, Simon. Thanks to Jen and Kristi's expert guidance, we found the perfect raw food combination that has literally turned back the clock for him. He's more playful, enjoys his walks more, and overall, seems much younger. The transformation has been incredible to witness. I can't recommend Maxwell's Pet Bar enough. If you're looking to improve your pet's health and happiness, this is the place to start!”
“The owner and all the staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable! When I was fostering a puppy and felt overwhelmed (to say the least) they were a guiding force, allowing me to keep fostering dogs. Their years of expertise in dog nutrition, training and merchandise - show brightly through their deep love for animals. Favorite pet store in the Bay Area for sure! I wish I could give them more than 5 stars ✨ ???”
“When I shop at Fill Good, I feel good. My main purchases are cleaning items like dish soap, dishwasher powder, all-purpose cleaner, and hand-soap. Those items are competitively priced with supermarkets, albeit minus the externality of the plastic. They offer donation jars or upcycled wax-bags if you come without. The staff is very knowledgable and I always chat with them about the best ways to recycle and compost etc. I love the loyalty program too. I feel like can do something about the standard pig-lifesytle that's offered by Amazon and friends.”
“I love the convenience of coming in to just grab pet supplies and not having to stand in a long grocery store line. The employees usually know exactly where the product you are looking for is located so you can be in and out in minutes. I appreciate that there is almost always a replacement that fits your needs if they are out of what you want and that friendly pets are welcome inside.”

“I just wanted to thank the staff of Pawtrero Hill for being so kind to me during my visit to San Francisco. I was there to help watch my friend's puppy and every staffer I met was just as pleasant and helpful as could be with my many "noob" questions.”

“A smaller size store, but the staff are big dog lovers. The love my black lab, Buddy. Their were tears when he passed. Now, they treat my new lab with the same care and love. When I came in with my arm in a sling, they grabbed the big bag and carried it out to my car without my asking for help. Great staff!”

5108 Broadway, Oakland“Lots of parking, very convenient to shop after grocery shopping and Safeway. Friendly staff and they have enclosed kennel area inside and outside of store for training classes on weekends for our puppy. Easy vaccination available Tuesday through Saturday at the vet clinic in the back of store.”
“One of a kind stop for all your pet needs. The personalized customer service is truly exceptional--not something you can expect in the big box stores. Try the handmade, preservative-free dog treats!”
“The staff is extremely friendly, they know what they are doing, and I loved the dedication with which they do their job, you can tell that they are committed people, they are the best!!!”
“What a wonderful discovery! In contrast to all those over-priced, ultra corporate PetCo-type businesses out there, this is a pleasant, old-time store with real service and great prices. It will be my go-to for all the kibble my doggie needs!”
“A huge pet supply store that has everything your dog or cat would possibly need. And more.i got some chews for a big dog and some toys. The chews seem very expensive. But cheaper than in the smaller stores on Polk. Overall the store is quite sterile. But you dont come here for the ambiance. They have a big parking lot right out front.”
“I bought a Paco Collar for my now 13 year old dobermann girl before she was even born. One of the jewels came off and without hesitation they sent me, not one, but a whole pack of replacements. Not one has fallen off since. Bear in mind, I live in the UK. The collar is still going strong and will be handed down to the new boy, for hopefully another 13 years ”
“Excellent customer service and generally great selection with an unbeatably large parking lot (for the area). Their inventory system isn’t always great at updating (not this location’s fault), but the staff are excellent about checking shelves and inventory in advance if you call ahead and are also happy to call other locations for you if they’re out of a particular item.”
“This is our local spot for hay, treats, and pellets for our Ziggy Smalls! We stopped purchasing from Amazon and SPS, due to poor quality of 2nd cut Timothy...Ziggy was basically using it as his litter vs eating it. purchasing local here, supports his mission and ensures a safe haven for rabbit and Guinea pig owners so we feel good about coming here. We adore James and he's always helpful and kind when we visit. He was able to give advice when Ziggy had too much "wet poop", even after changing his daily amount of fresh greens. Thank you James! We also found out about them via local Facebook group: "rabbits of the Bay Area".”
“I use to shop here for my pigeon feed and they was such great friendly people. I wonder if it's the same people running the store that i use to come buy feed 2012. Well now i have Cockatiels and Canary's so i will be buying my feed from you again. Because the store Elgranero feed store stop customer from using their credit cards and they only except cash that has been going on for 1 yr now. And i wanted to buy a canary bird and i didn't have the cash to buy it now so i wasn't able to buy bird.”

4814 Broadway, Oakland“We've been coming to Petvet since our first dog years ago. The clinic itself is still just as awesome and affordable. Definitely expect to wait as it's first come, first serve, but the vaccination line moves pretty fast. Exams line takes a bit more time. Today specifically Annette was great getting our pets vaccinated even with our antsy ones.
As far as the pet store section, it's also super helpful especially when it comes to finding quality and/or hard to find pet products. So many products to choose from and hard to resist especially when my daughter visits with me.”
“Amazing high quality pet products, wide variety of items & my dogs love coming in to sniff everything! (Great buy 3, get 1 free deals on all products..!) Also the baths are really convenient for washing dogs. Makes bath time much easier & can just rinse the fur & grime down the drain.”
“We've been going to Black Nose since 2014 because Walt is basically the only other human we'd trust to watch our pup. We moved out of San Francisco a few years ago but still bring our pup back for boarding here when we travel. Our dog is a mellow senior with daily medication and some other health issues but we fully trust Walt and Black Nose to take care of her. I wish I could give this place 10 stars!”
“Cute and cozy pet supply in the heart of the Mission! I stopped by for some dog treats and was pleasantly greeted by the owner Daniel and two young studious high school associates. Support your local small business ❤️”
“Very nice people, as are people who shop there. Nice neighborhood also. My Chihuahua walked out with some new duds and all the fixings. I know the place is fairly new, but there's just a lot of potential there. I hope they really keep going with the concept of what real dog food should be. I fear just like us, the food is leading them to their graves. Makes me sick going to the chains! How many dogs do you know that like crackers (a few). I love my animals, they are living beings, and not lesser life forms, as is the perception of a lot of human beings. We force them into an unnatural, and unforgiving world, as we kill of the rest of them or some other torture practice that we fail to recognize. They deserve better lives.”
“This is the best experience. It's relaxing, beautiful, fun, wholesome, and healthy. Don't be thrown off by the gorgeous setting, it's just the right amount of fancy. My dog feels special when we're there, and I really enjoy sharing this unique experience with him. I highly recommend a visit to Dogue SF.”

129 Tamalpais Rd, Berkeley“"Open Paw - Good Habits Are Hard to Break." This review is based on attendance at several lectures by Open Paw speakers as well as direct experience with the Open Paw program and the programs founders. (BTW, while I love cats, I own 3 dogs and work with dogs on a daily basis. My bias therefore, leads me to write about dogs.) Open Paw is a multi-faceted approach to making companion pets (more) adoptable, educating pet owners (preferably before an adoption), and keeping pets in the home once they are adopted. When the Open Paw program is employed at the animal shelter level, staff, volunteers and visitors to the shelter are encouraged to feed the dogs part of their daily food ration for displaying appropriate behavior (sitting quietly instead of barking and lunging) at the front of the kennel. The dogs get lots of repetition for this appropriate behavior throughout the day and dogs that are shy or aggressive around people learn that the approach of strangers is a good thing - this is how they get their dinner! Special care is also given in the Open Paw program to teach and maintain housebreaking by ensuring that the shelter dogs get adequate time out of the kennel - housebroken dogs shouldn't be forced to soil their kennel. (In most shelter situations, the mental and physical health of the dogs is constantly deteriorating. Constant barking, lack of physical exercise and mental stimulation as well as inadequate levels of staff and volunteers to get the dogs out frequently enough - these are the ingredients for doggie stress and deterioration found in most shelters.) In and out of the shelters, Open Paw strives to educate prospective pet owners BEFORE they adopt. Far too many dogs are returned to shelters because the new owners don't have realistic expectations of their new companion and they don't know how to resolve insanely simple problems. Post-adoption, Open Paw continues its efforts to educate pet owners and handlers with the goal of keeping the new pet in the home for a lifetime. In addition to a vast amount of resources available on the website, Open Paw also offers - for free - a electronic (pdf) file of "Before You Get Your Puppy", by Dr. Ian Dunbar. (Dunbar - a very well known and respected veterinarian, animal behaviorist, dog trainer, and writer - revolutionized the dog training world when he opened "Sirius Puppy Training". He is also the founder of Open Paw.) The Open Paw program and what it strives for is nothing short of brilliant. The priceless information is appropriate for anyone who might come into contact with domesticated animals. Pet lovers, owners, the general public as well as people that don't like pets - all would benefit from OU (Open Paw University). Check it out, get educated & gain some knowledge about our fuzzy friends! This is pure win-win-win!”

“I like the selection, and the 3 for 1 pricing for cat food. They also have a great selection. They always ask if I need help, and are happy to answer my questions. Not overwhelming - just friendly.”
