“Fifty-one years ago (71 - 73), I lived at this lodge along with my sister, baby sister, and baby brother. We lived in the largest cabin, and none of the "rustic" cabins there now even compare! Ours was so rustic, my Mom cooked on a wood stove, we had a pot belly wood stove in the great room(?) for heat where all of us kids slept. We did our homework in the kitchen and Mom and my step-dad had their bedroom. Are we missing a room? It was down the road a ways! For nights, there was a bucket behind a long bar the owners had stored in there. For school, it was a long drive down the mountain in some guys suburban, sometimes scary, because he liked to flirt with the teen girls we picked up along the way. But it was the best place in the world for a kid to grow up. We seen different wildlife almost everyday. We did things kids should do, run, play and enjoy life. The owners had a daughter my age, so I was set for my best life. Never in all the years of moving around following the life of a logger, have I ever had better memories of any place that we lived. Even the spots that the chinking was missing in our cabin and it was winter. Bear Lodge doesn't look much like it used to, but it was the best part of my growing up.”
