About Yerkes Observatory
Yerkes Observatory is a fascinating historic site located on the shoreline of Geneva Lake. Built in 1895, it features impressive architecture and engineering, including the world's biggest refractor telescope. The grounds are beautiful, especially in September when the asters are dispersing their seeds, creating a magical atmosphere. Visitors can walk around the free arboretum and book guided tours to learn about the observatory’s history, telescopes, and buildings. The tours are led by knowledgeable guides who bring enthusiasm and make the experience special, often highlighting how little most people know about astronomy. The observatory offers day tours, night tours, and evening events, with some tours allowing visitors to look through the giant telescope lens and see the observatory’s ceiling doors open. Restoration work has been ongoing to bring the campus back to its 19th-century splendor while incorporating modern features like an ADA lift. Overall, Yerkes Observatory is a place of history, science, and beauty that inspires visitors of all ages and continues to thrive as a cultural and educational landmark.

Such an outstanding tour. It's worth it to see the library, telescope, and grounds that giants of astrophysics used: Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Edwin Hubbell, and Carl Sagan included.
The telescope is huge.
The tour is delightfully sciency
