If you’re an average modern consumer that doesn’t carry cash, stay far away from here.
The owner is living in the past; requiring an absolutely absurd $10 minimum purchase with a debit or credit card.
So the average person can’t stop in to buy a six pack of light beer unless they have cash. Seems like they only want cash business so that they’re in control of what they report to the IRS.
I almost wasn’t allowed to use a card for a purchase of $9.50. The cashier had to make it abundantly clear that they were making an exception for me and that this policy has apparently been around for 30 years lol.
It’s 2024… and this liquor store is in a city, acting like a liquor store in a rural area in the 90’s. Most people don’t get paid in cash and in order to get cash you have to go to an atm or bank and pay a fee to have your money in physical form.
The store still looks like it hasn’t been updated since the 90’s, most of the coolers have no lights and the shelving for wine and liquor are old, beat up, and dusty. Don’t even get me started on the floors.
I felt bad for the very kind person working there. I doubt they’re paid a fair wage, and they’re probably paid in cash given the owners penchant for avoiding transactions where money can be traced. This place needs to either get with the times, or go bye bye.
-1/5 if I could, $10 minimum card purchase is unheard of and outrageous. I would love to hear of another liquor store in the MKE area that has such an outrageous policy.
I highly suspect this is unique to this specific store and the legendarily cheap owner.
I’ll be spreading the word to anyone I come across in the area. If Pekar’s can survive on locals that have cash, then good for them. They won’t be getting new customers living in modern times that use cards and contactless payment.
If a person can’t buy a six pack of cheap light beer with their debit card then like, what’s even the point? They’re missing out on potential profits because of this idiotic policy. I know I won’t be taking my business there ever again, and I’ll make sure no one I know goes there either.

I used to come in to get certain things for work that they, for some weird reason, carry. I was out at the beach with my dog- my BABY. Husband texted me frantically saying he could not make several of our cocktails because he ran out of orange curaçao...I knew Pekar's had it.I pulled into their empty parking lot, left the car running with the air on for my dog, and ran in for the bottle of liqueur and two bottles of club soda. Well the witch that was working the counter- maybe an owner, not sure- she called the police on me. It was terrible. She also told them that I was quote "wandering around the store and wobbly and I looked tipsy'" end quote. She also told them I "fell out of my car when I arrived." I actually dropped my phone and picked it up. Crazy. I was hiking with my dog. Not wasted.I guess I should have known she would call the fr-king police because there is a tiny handwritten note taped to their window, amongst many other aggressive notes, that says she will call the police if you leave your dog in the car. Even if you leave the dog in the air conditioned running vehicle for two minutes while you grab a bottle of orange curaçao for work. She will also lie and try to get you arrested because she is a horrid person and, I think, she also just hates women. It was traumatizing, embarrassing, confusing and really upsetting. Why, WHY, would a business owner do that to a responsible customer? I have ideas.

Pekar's is your average neighborhood, family owned liquor store. Some things are a buck or two more or less than market and they get some interesting things in on a regular basis. They have always been friendly and kind to me every time I've stopped in.
