The ppl at CCHS are the most caring and compassionate employees and volunteers. They had a lot of kittens to adopt and they were adorable. but.... not now.

Columbia County Humane Society is an incredible organization that services a rural part of the state where the needs of most stray animals would not be met otherwise. Their staff are incredibly kind and helpful. Sadly many of their animals go unadopted much longer than comparable urban-centered humane societies, in large part because of a smaller local population. We have adopted two amazing cats from CCHS while in Madison, and can absolutely vouch for CCHS being worth the drive. This is not at all a slight against Dane County Humane Society and other Madison-area shelters, but the simple fact is that there are thousands of people locally in the Madison area that adopt virtually every animal within days if not hours. If you broaden your search to include Columbia, you'll be amazed at the animals that are available.
The staff at CCHS is as knowledgeable and efficient as other humane societies, and maintain a verified no-kill shelter. They give so much insight into the animals you visit, from temperament to eating habits, and clearly are passionate about helping these animals find homes. We have been so happy with CCHS, are happy to have recommended them to friends and family, and will continue to go to them in the future.
Also, if you find yourself with unneeded pet food, consider donating it to CCHS. They are always happy to take donations, and both of our cats lived on donated food after they were taken in, before we were lucky enough to adopt them.

We adopted two of our cats from here and I can't speak highly enough of this place. they do amazing work for the community, operating an actual no-kill shelter and working hard to find homes for every animal that comes through their doors (on what I imagine is a not-so-generous budget). Adopt your next best friend from here, or toss a donation their way!

The Columbia County Humane Society gave us our perfect little kitties. They are 3 month old sisters and have been the perfect addition to our home. The staff were friendly and helpful. They even accommodated suture removal 1 week after adoption. Could not recommend enough!

Neat, clean, friendly people. Reported our lost dog, and they were already making a post for their website. Made a donation, they were very nice. Thankfully our dog came home next morning.

Do not adopt from here. They are sending pets they claim have been dewormed. They might have been given a dose but they do not promise health. The pet my friend adopted was full of worms and told to just change its food. The pet has now passed parasites on to other pets and people. The humane society does not care! In speaking with others who recently adopted in late 2023 they had experienced the same issue.
