You know you're in a VA hospital when the prep nurses finish the question "Do you have any metal in your body?" with "any shrapnel?" I had outpatient surgery for hernia repair at the Madison, WI, VA hospital Monday. It went very well. Everybody was incredible, from the garage attendant to the senior surgeon. The attitude was purely "how may I help you?" But the nurses, from prep through recovery to "you're outta here" were absolute angels. It was a "routine" surgery on a "routine" day for them. For me it was anything but routine. The nurses out there know how great they are - and they're right. I cannot imagine getting better care.

Very nice veteran's hospital compared to some I've seen. Very clean, organized and spacious rooms. Our veterans are well worth comfortable/quality amenities! The grounds and hospital are very well maintained...showing excellent management! The nurse, Gabe, was very cordial and very professional in taking care of my brother! So proud of my brother and the commitment and respect shown to all our veterans!

I just transferred from the San Diego VA System, and so far I'm pretty impressed. I was able to get all my appointments transferred over rather seamlessly; except for optometry which I'm still trying to navigate. The only "bummer" for me is the 90min drive from Rockford to Madison. But it's an easier drive than the 35min one from Oceanside to La Jolla. Lol I mean, if you're only considering other drivers that is. The road situation will suck come snow time. To any female vets reading this, Dr. Rodzak (OB/GYN) is pretty darn awesome. Best I've encountered since 2002 (between active duty, and then a mil spouse).

I saw a therapist, Casey Hoffman, for over a year now. She was so inconsistent with my appointment times and I would not have any therapy session at all until the following week cause she was busy doing something else. I would leave phone messages and emails, but never responded back within a reasonable time period. She didn't give me any warnings beforehand but claimed she had at the previous session...that's a big lie. I told her how I felt about her and she said that it wasn't her fault for the way I'm feeling. I didn't say it was her fault to begin with but it was an issue for me. I told her That I wanted a different therapist but she said that she will no longer see me and I am kicked out of the DBT program entirely.

Had facial cancer spot . Showed student doctor. He very excitedly removed half of my left eyebrow?? Had to go to Mercy Hospital in Janesville to get cancer removed. Young student doctor, Aimee missed my rising cancer numbers for a Year before another young doctor spotted it. 35 radiation treatments later at a non -VA hospital it was under control again. My present VA physician didn't want to do a psa blood test to check for returning cancer?? I can see why the ratings for the VA hospital in Madison, WI. is so low. I recommend shutting down All VA hospitals and let the veterans go to their local civilian hospitals!

BillieThompson was a trucker and he pushed his way in pain through several states to get to Madison, VA specifically because he said it was just the best care of any VA out there. He pulled in with his semi to the emergency room not knowing why he was in so much pain. He passed of cancer three weeks later in the hospice unit. The staff was so incredible to him and to us. Dr Kim, Nurse Willie, Nurse Lee, Nurse Basha, Assistant Nurse Tim, Social worker Sophia and chaplain Joyce are just a few of the many who gave every ounce of themselves to make that heavy time their in hospice so much easier for us and to make Billie as comfortable as possible. They were like family. Thank you

Preface: I have had adequate care here with my primary physician here. However, this morning at 2 am I went to the ER with awful jaw pain and sinus pain that had kept me up for 3 days, and had a fever of 101.2.The nurse was nice, but we were there for over 2.5 hours and they basically told me to take ibuprofen, which is exactly what I had been doing for the last 4 days. They didn't take my concerns seriously, didn't run any tests, and left me in pain without any medication or relief measures. I had to drive an hour just to get there because the VA won't pay for local care, and was a complete waste of my time. My recommendation: get different insurance and go somewhere that actually cares.

VHA Side at Madison VA is a decent place to get medical care, and in a fairly timely manner. Unless you need Dental, Optical, Sleep Clinic, Physical Therapy or Prothestics (which are all overworked, over scheduled and understaffed departments) The rest of the medical care is top notch. As for the VBA side(Veterans Benefits Side) ie Comp & Pension. That side is overworked, understaffed, and they get in trouble for siding with too many veterans. If you can avoid having a Comp and Pension done at the Madison VA I would. The internist who does a lot of the C&P exams is actually pretty decent, but still overworked but she tries. As for the Orthopedic doctor that does C&P exams it will be a waste of time for you and your benefits to even bother seeing her, as she will not do a complete exam, she will review records partially and then figure out a way to deny your claim even if it is in black and white or at least extend the claim so you have to appeal it. I have seen her 7 times in the last 4 years and always get denied, then appeal and have won the appeal. Now I am still fighting some of it though to back date the appeal to the first denial like the VA should of done in the first place, but no they closed that appeal case when they made a decision but never notified me of the initial decision. THE VBA side in Wisconsin is a nightmare right now. 22 years of fighting and finally got 100% and still fighting for stupid things like housebound and aid and attendance that are cut and dry but they don't even bother reviewing to approve.
