We have been working with Shelter From The Storm since 2011. We have adopted dogs as well as fostered and assisted in placing a lot of dogs into amazing homes! We have also been helping with transfer of animals from other shelters into Shelter From The Storm to find Fosters and place for adoptions. The staff at the shelter are amazing. They are very caring with the animals and have done an extremely amazing job finding animals in need a loving home!

I have volunteered at SFTS for almost a year now. I am so impressed with the compassion and commitment shown by all of the management and care staff, and by their sister clinic. In addition to providing care they also have good resources to deal with more traumatized pets.
Please keep in mind that this is a no-kill rescue that accepts animals from overcrowded shelters where they were at risk of being euthanized. Often they have no idea of the animal’s background but don’t allow them do be adopted until is they are fully assessed, vaccinated, desexed and microchipped and socialized. In different environments animals may respond differently. And like any pet they will need time to decompress and feel safe before their true nature shines through.
It is also a 401 c3 organization that is dependent largely on donations to keep well-staffed and able to help more animals. I worked at a shelter prior to this, and there is a lot more opportunity here for volunteers to help socialize and love on the animals and get them away from stressful life of a rescue, at least for a while.
I would not volunteer or leave this review if I did not believe in this rescue.

This is the epitome of what an animal shelter should be. They care about finding their animals safe homes and the staff work around the clock to provide both customers and animals the best experience possible.

SFTS is a great shelter to be associated with. They do the best for their animals in their care and work hard to find them a home they will fit in.

Hi everyone. I want to share my experience I’ve had with this company.
My mother in law recently fostered a dog ( to adopt) named Imara. Sweetest girl ever. She’s 12 years old so a senior dog who in the past had been abused and bred so many times that her lady parts hang and will never be the same. My mother in law had been looking for a dog for at least a year, after her husband had passed away. When her application got accepted she was so excited. She drove to Madison on 10/17/2024 to meet her and bring her home. The staff had told her the night before she was to be brought home that Imara had had surgery. They told my mother in law she had a mass under her left chest. Mass was removed, she had stitches from chest cavity down to her female parts. The day after she was brought home, she was taken to our vet because she started bleeding from her stitches. Mind you, these stitches do not look like they were professionally done. Aren’t dogs suppose to stay put and heal for at least a week before being fostered into a new home? Mind you the DAY AFTER she had surgery. These people have responded once to us in a week. They have not called us back or email us about anything. I feel like they took advantage of my mother in law, dumped Imara on her, and now won’t respond to anything we say. Imara is being taken to the vet now for the 3rd time this Monday because her stitches have broken open and you literally can see the inside of her. I’m mortified and heartbroken this 12 year dog is going through this. I want people to know I will do WHATEVER it takes to make sure this dog is OKAY. But shame on this company. They never told us how bad of shape she was in. I have all the documentation and information I need when I report this company to state.
Thanks!

Got my special little orange boy here, he's become mine and my other cat's best friend. Adoption process was very smooth and easy and I was even able to foster him beforehand to make sure he was the right fit and that my black cat liked him as well.

The wonderful folks at Shelter from the Storm helped us find the perfect new addition to our family! The application process was easy and they were very kind about answering questions. If you adopt from them make sure to get your ‘welcome kits’ from Tabby & Jack and Mounds!

Can't say enough wonderful things about the dedicated people who work here. They put their blood, sweat and tears in all their work. The animals are in great shape and are so friendly. This is my girl Riot. Adopted from Shelter from the Storm a few years ago.

If I could give this rescue more stars, I would!
This is an extremely busy and well run facility, filled with kindhearted, caring, loving and affectionate employees and volunteers. Their compassion, attention and availability toward the animals is selfless.
On April 13th, we adopted a 10 month old Lab/Husky mix who went by the name of Polar Bear. He had been fostered by one of the wonderful employees. She did a beautiful job. He was so well behaved when we got him home that it was hard to believe he was just a puppy!
He is a beautiful dog who now goes by the name of Nitschke and he couldn't be a happier, healthier and more well adjusted dog. (We're so glad he found us!)
To anyone who is so self centered as to complain about these hard working shelter people not getting back quickly enough to respond to you, I'll assume you're oblivious to what it takes to run a well kept, beautiful shelter such as this one.
The hours are long and the work is never done!
Spend a few hours observing, or better yet, volunteer for a day.
For those of you complaining about the animals you adopted not being what you expected, you should probably be made aware that animals can sense not only happiness and kindness, but also
negativity and hostility. Maybe you need to take a look at yourselves!
I highly recommend this well run shelter and all the hard working animal lovers who are a part of it!
Thank you for who you are and what you do!

Not only are all the staff members kind and helpful but they genuinely care about all the animals in the shelter. They are willing to take in any and all animals and provide as much comfort for them as possible. Overall, SFTS is a wonderful place!

I adopted my first cat, a really sweet three year old boy, from this shelter little over a week ago. The staff were nice, but the whole operation did seem a bit disorganized.
My main gripe, though, is that the cat I adopted was stated to have no known medical issues, including dental issues, and the records they gave me included the results of an examination done the day before that said just that. But when I took him to the vet today, the vet immediately noticed and showed me that he's missing several teeth on one side of his mouth, and has another tooth on the other side that has a resorptive lesion and will need to be surgically removed. I'll have to spend around $700-$900 to have that work done. So clearly, whoever the shelter has examining the animals either isn't thorough enough, isn't properly trained, or is omitting things in their reports.
The adoption contract the shelter makes you sign includes a clause saying they are not responsible for any medical expenses after adopting, so there seems to be nothing I can do now at this point, besides warn others to be careful and find a shelter that more thoroughly examines and treats their animals.

Carefully read the reviews here and the consistency with adopting too many animals, not responding ever to customers... adopting out sick animals. What's going on here? How is this place a 4.1 when even the 5 star reviews are complaining about being ghosted during the process?
