Because it is contemporary, it is a bit difficult to follow.
But since it's free, it's great to spend some time relaxing in a space with a nice atmosphere (although it may be a little bizarre depending on the exhibition) and relax on the rooftop terrace with a view of the Capitol.

The view from the rooftop sculpture garden was the highlight for me. I enjoyed seeing the variety of buildings, especially the older ones, from a vantage point above the busy streets and sidewalks below. The benches allow for relaxed conversation. This free museum is not large, but tall and features a lot of glass. There are only a few exhibits, which change periodically. The current theme seems to illustrate the danger of repressive authoritarian governments. An important, timely warning.

Well... I love art but I don't understand these exhibits. Since when has cutouts of magazine pictures made into a collage or plastic stars on the floor considered muesum worthy art? Thank God the muesum is free. Definitely not worth a nickle.

First, as an art museum MMoCA is lovely! However, this is a review of our experience as a wedding venue. First I want to say that our wedding day was wonderful! MMoCA is a beautiful venue and we worked with incredible outside vendors to have a fantastic day, however our experience with MMoCA specifically was really unfortunate. When we first booked the venue we had known someone who had gotten married there and heard good things. Our initial communications with their coordinator were positive. After a couple months from booking we reached out with a couple questions to no response. Our question was related to guest capacity because our contract said 175 limit, but our caterer was shocked to hear that and said they'd never done a group that large in the space, which really made us nervous as we invited 170 (157 came and it was tight). We followed up several weeks later and were told that person left the position and we would be contacted by a new individual closer to the wedding. We didn't have a point of contact for many months in between booking and our wedding, but were hopeful that once the new staff came in that it would be okay. Unfortunately, the team that took over were all new and this would be their first wedding. We totally understand staff turnover and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt when we had trouble getting questions answered during our walk through 2 months prior to the wedding as the new person had only worked there 2 weeks. We have been new at jobs too! However, while our interactions remained cordial, the communication was slow, uncertain, contradictory at times and we never got the sense that they were trying to make a positive experience for us, but rather that we should be lucky we are allowed to use the space. I will spare the details, but our outside wedding coordinator we hired ran into dozens of communication difficulties with the venue and had trouble accessing basic needs in the building due to lack of knowledge or training with staff. We were shielded from many of the issues, but prior to the wedding we asked for the lights to be set to dim, which they were not (fine, not a big deal), but the staff member there didn't know how to turn them down and then the system froze. Another staff member came in on his day off to fix the system, which was nice, but he rather rudely blew me off when I approached him to say thank you. Keep in mind we didn't ask him to arrive, he just showed up. We had also paid for the museum to stay open 1 hour later for our guests, which it was not. Not huge deals, the wedding was great. However, after the wedding, we received a very off-putting email with essentially a pdf report card with ~20 bullet points including minute to minute updates of the weekend. They said we would not receive our deposit back, citing us for so many normal aspects of an event such as vendors arriving 30 minutes earlier than estimated, a small vase of ours breaking on the dance floor and most notably for having food and drink in the lecture hall, which is the path to the bathroom. They said they were not going to return our security deposit because of these issues (and more). We have email confirmation of them telling us we can use the lecture hall freely even suggesting we put cocktail tables in there. This also contradicts the contract, which included other outdated information such as using their caterer Fresco, which doesn't exist. All contradictory information created a lot of confusion. I have never sent an email to a business refuting a claim like this before, but I took an hour of my honeymoon to respond to these claims with our concerns. Thankfully, they apologized and returned our security deposit. Overall, we understand staff turnover, but were really disappointed with the lack of training/tools for new staff, all of the communication errors and overall lack of warmth in our communication. We had a great day overall, but unfortunately can't recommend.

I am a wedding photographer and have photographed a few weddings at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, most recently in September 2023. This is such a stunning venue to work at! The venue is located right on State Street so it’s easy to walk up to the Capitol or along the street for exciting photos. The glass staircase is filled with natural light and becomes an amazing backdrop for photos. The rooftop sculpture garden is a great location for an outdoor ceremony with views of the Capitol and State Street. The venue staff is excellent to work with. There were several options of areas for the wedding party to get ready, to have the reception dinner, and to have cocktail hour. I would definitely recommend booking your wedding ceremony and reception here!

Lackluster administration, creativity and art collections leaves very little excitement. Perhaps curate and display some famous artists of the 1920-70’s even if the works on display are knock-offs or mock-ups. Whether Warhol or Lichtenstein, pop art is fun, interesting and weirdly wonderful. Also, a fully permanent virtual installation not unlike the “Immersive Van Gogh” that was at Lighthouse could draw more visitors… because the place is usually like a ghost town, and who can blame the public for avoiding a mostly stagnant and boring place

This museum was filled to the brim with beautiful and interesting pieces. I appreciated their involvement in the community; we visited during the student art show. The museum curators and educators were extremely thoughtful in the different resources they had available to view the artwork. I loved looking closely through the magnifying glass at all of the different works on display; it made me feel like a kid. While I also loved the video installations, as an educator I think it may be helpful to have larger signage about what content is visible in each room. I noticed a few kids walk into a rather explicit video game simulation. That said, that’s also on the parents.

Madison's Museum of Contemporary Art is a wonderful building for a number of reasons. Firstly, the price of admission: whatever you can afford to donate. Not just students, but anyone can visit without having to pay. Secondly, the building itself is a fitting and gorgeous space, tired together with a large and well-kept glass staircase serves as a showcase of it's own, as the quality of the view out of the multi-story glass panels increases with every step. Each gallery is unique, and the building embraces this in the exhibits. Finally, there is the roof garden which boasts sculptures and an impressive view of State Street below. Really a wonderful space in which to enjoy art or the city of Madison, itself.
