I recently purchased a 2005 Nitro boat from Ryan, who operates a boat shop. My experience has been nothing short of frustrating and disappointing. Here's a detailed account to inform potential buyers of what to expect.
I drove over three hours to pick up the boat and paid in cash. Upon receiving the title, I noticed it was under someone else's name. When I inquired about the need for a bill of sale, especially for registering the trailer in Minnesota, Ryan assured me it wasn't necessary. I suspect this might be his way of avoiding taxes, but that's beside the point.
Upon inspecting the boat, I found it in a deplorable state—covered in spider webs, algae, and filled with junk in the storage compartments. Ryan started the boat for me out of water, and it seemed to run smoothly despite the noise. He claimed the boat was "ready for the water."
After spending several hours cleaning and making minor repairs—such as fixing the rear trim to prevent water from spilling in, replacing the busted bilge plug, winch, and trailer roller—I took the boat out on the water. Unfortunately, an alarm went off immediately.
I contacted Ryan the following day about the alarm but received no response. After a few more outings, I discovered the boat wouldn't plane. A visit to a professional shop revealed the oil reservoir had a leak, causing the engine to run dry.
When I informed Ryan, he initially agreed to meet me halfway and refund my money. However, he later reneged, claiming he needed to cover parts and that I should not have run the boat with the alarm on. He offered to refund only part of the money, keeping $2,000 to fix and resell the boat.
This whole ordeal left me with a boat that had $120 of premium fuel, a new winch, trailer roller, and transom saver, along with countless hours and a few hundred dollars spent on repairs and cleaning. Despite these investments, I was willing to consider it a "rental" cost, but the lack of integrity and responsibility from Ryan was unacceptable.
In summary, be extremely cautious if you choose to do business here. My experience highlights the potential for being misled and left with a defective product. I hope this review helps others avoid the same fate.
I’m down $10k and will need to spend $3.5k minimum in repairs before I can even get the boat on the water for a 4th time.
