My husband and I head to Door County in the off-season for quiet get-aways. Lately, our location of choice is the Edgewater Resort in Ephraim. The rooms are cozy and clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the location is quiet, but within a short drive of fun shopping, galleries, and restaurants when we want a change of pace. We love everything about our visits and are already planning our next one.

I booked 2 nights for our 1 year anniversary. I called ahead to ask if they had a hot tub. The employee said there was a hot tub in our room. Great! We arrive and the room they tried to give us was a closet with a bed. I asked at the desk if there was some mix up. This being my gift to my husband for our 1 year anniversary I paid the extra $160 for an "upgrade."There was a jet tub that was filthy. We tried running a couple cycles of water through but there were particles come out.The thermostats kept adjusting back to 72. It was at least 75 each time we were in the room. We opened the windows at night and turned the AC on in the front room. At one point I kept the door completely open to help cool the place off.Don't use the dishes. They were dirty.

We stayed in the studio cottage with our two dogs and it was perfect for what we were looking for. Cute, clean, and very dog friendly. The only downsides were that the fish boil is feet from our cottage which wasn't listed anywhere when we booked and isn't the most ideal when you're looking for a quieter space for dogs. We also had originally booked the studio cottage for 2 nights, then the 1 bedroom for our 3rd night, and they switched us day of via email to the studio for all 3 nights. This wasn't a big problem for us, just wasn't the best communication had we been planning on using the kitchen that cabin offered or having guests with a larger space. Added bonus is the old post office breakfasts, and was walkable to several things in the area!

As another reviewer this month noted, avoid room 116. Not worth the price with proximity to Old Post Office restaurant. Leaf blower every morning at 7 and always a crowd of waiting diners on the patio right outside our door ahead of breakfast and dinner. Pool lights shining through windows all night. No privacy and no view. We’ve enjoyed other rooms here before but don’t take 116.

I called and needed a room for my wife and I and our 2 labs. One night stay. Staff was super polite and friendly and had a room open for one night The place is immaculate. The atmosphere and front desk service was above and beyond. I understand a two or three night stay in peak season in Door County … but we got lucky and there was a one night stay available. We live in Milwaukee Area but are also Door County residents and can honestly say of all the resorts , house rentals , etc … this is our favorite. Trust when the locals say stay here !!! Thank You for accommodating us even thought it was one night , we’ll be lifelong guests !!!

When a guest request at the front desk for additional towels is met with “Did you read the white information paper we gave you at check-in?”, as a guest, you know you are in trouble! And that sentiment pretty well summarizes how I felt about our four night stay at the Edgewater Resort in Ephraim, Wisconsin. The “resort” proudly states that it was established in 1900….and from my perspective likely not updated since then. Well, that’s not fair. Probably updated in the 1970’s (there is air-conditioning!), but it remains mired in 50 years ago. The above-mentioned air conditioning is the in-room style and the ones at Edgewater Resort would give the ones at Motel 6 a run for their money - super noisy. Our room featured a heart-shaped bathtub (think Poconos!) and “housekeeping” set up: a huge microwave from the 1970’s whose clock dial cast a bluish tinge over the room at night (had to cover it with something) and perched atop that, a vintage Mr. Coffee. I needed a chair to pour the water into the Mr. Coffee it was so high. They did give us a coffee packet and filter when we checked in - 2 actually. Can’t figure out how they arrived at that number; we were there four nights - but no mention of sugar or creamer! There was only one bedside lamp, so we had to make sure to go to sleep at the same time.TV is cable - no logging into Netflix or Amazon at this “resort!” The plastic one piece molded style shower (think 1970’s!) is as small as a telephone booth and the shower head is set so that when you turn on the shower, the water shoots right out at you (and your towel and your bathmat…hence the need for more towels!). The “towel bars” on the wall near the sink look like the safety grab rails in a bathtub and are relatively low to the ground making it a challenge (or impossible) to hang up a towel to dry. And, there is no countertop in the bathroom…just a narrow sink and a small wicker shelving unit - good luck shaving, guys!Back to the towels…..I did do what the white information paper said….I put the white towels outside in the provided hamper and I called the front desk for more. I called three times, but no towels. I know they got the ones in the hamper….they were gone. The next day, after the scene at the front desk mentioned above, we did get towels. Other unpleasant issues: they leave the outside lights on all night - street lights around the closed up pool - and the light comes through the 1970’s miniblinds all night. And, other resorts have chairs for guests to sit outside and enjoy the weather and the scenery - there are a few plastic chairs around, but not in front of all the rooms…and certainly not in front of 116. After all, for close to $300 a night, what could one expect?! I know that COVID did away with maid service - once again for $300ish a night, I still miss it!On a plus note, the wi-fi was good and there were plenty of places to change electronic devices.

Not a resort, this is an ancient 120 yr old motel. Door opens to the parking lot. Porch door jams on the floor before it is fully open. Outside furniture covered in spiders and dead bugs. Windows covered in filth and blinds don’t cover the entire window. Had to prop pillows hide the gap from the constant traffic just 20 ft from the window. AC runs non stop yet never cools the room. Bed is higher than my navel for some reason and I’m handicapped yet the toilet is not comfort height. Pool was closed without notice even though it was over 75 degrees and humid. All restaurants are fishboil most nights and almost no parking. It’s 2am and I’m packing to leave. Worst place we’ve ever booked and I’m not kidding.

Amazing view that can’t be beat! Nice activities for family with a pool, hot tub, games such as bags available and private beach. Also attached to the Post Office restaurant so great fish boil and breakfast experience at your door step. Add in very short walk to Wilson’s ice cream!

*see photosPlease notice the distance from the fire/smoke and the 100+ guests, steps outside your door.Pray it’s not windy!Awful smoked filled cabins! Fishbowl 15 feet from your front door each night, 3 seatings. You can’t enjoy your porch, have to close up and put the AC on, and unless you like 100-125 looking in your windows, shut your blinds.Did speak to Patrick, manager, who was, “sorry” this isn’t mentioned in their brochure/info online. Also: no set parking for hotel guests, the dinner guests from the adjacent Old Post Office, fishbowl restaurant take up all the spaces. Good luck finding anywhere within a few blocks to park.Patrick, GM, promised a $250 per night credit for our inconvenience and awful experience. Still have not seen this posted.Noteworthy details: Please keep in mind with no parking set aside for hotel guests you might be parking blocks away, on the side of the road.
