Nathan Roberts’ great-great-grandfather, Griffith D. Roberts, founded GD Roberts Co. as a blacksmith shop in 1870 at a 4000 sq-ft facility. After a fire destroyed that building around 1930, the company built a stone facility that it still uses today. The business remained in the same building beginning in 1870 for the next 140 years, until the 2010 facility expansion. As a result of the expansion, the company went from a single-bay manufacturing plant to six bays and also expanded its paint facilities. “The story is that he walked 20 miles to the town next to us to borrow a blacksmith’s hammer to forge his own hammer, and that’s how he started in the business, but I think that’s kind of folklore,” – Nathan Roberts
