I think there is a vast misconception that because Elmbrook Hospital is in Brookfield that it is a competent facility....nothing could be further from the truth. It's emergency department is a joke as is their ICU. I would go to Froedert especially for ER situations.

My mother was taken to a room in the ER in under 10 minutes for a possible broken wrist. However, they Refused to allow me to accompany her, despite having medical power of attorney. The woman at the desk told me " the doctor will make the decisions ". Since when does the doctor make medical decisions when they don't even consult with the person who is responsible for the patient's medical decisions?? She was disoriented after she fell and the doctor is making decisions without knowing that. She wasn't rushed in by ambulance with me not here. I drove her here. I definitely will not bring my mother back here, if emergency medical care is needed in the future. The fact that they completely chose to ignore my medical power of attorney, which is on her medical chart, is one way for them to get sued. This used to be a great hospital.

Worst hospital ever. I would never go there for anything. Staff were so rude and hospital makes health decisions based on political views.

I had a 3 day hospital stay with 2 surgeries. My nurses did not help me at all. I had a pain pump and they kept on placing the button high on the IV rack so I couldn't reach it. They were slow to come and get it for me and I couldn't get out of bed. The food there was by far the worst I ever had. I am a bariatric patient and plus had a 9 hour surgery where I was intubated for probably 10 hours. My throat was burning & they served me acidic food like lemonade & breaded meat of some kind. This was not the right food for a bariatric patient. There were no choices or menus. There was no way to call the food service and select a different diet. I hope I never have to go back to this hospital because of the terrible care and diet I needed.

Nightmare started Feb 28, 2020 when I experienced 102.5 fever, confusion, emesis. Went to Ascension Urgent Care, Wauwatosa, WI & was diagnosed with Type A Influenza. Covid-19 had just come on scene so there was no test for Covid. March 30, 2020 went to Ascension Elmbrook Hospital ER, Brookfield WI with chest pressure. Diagnosed with pneumonia & was coded Z20.828 (contact with and (suspected) exposure to other viral communicable diseases). Because of this coding, was covered by my insurance. July 8, 2020 went to Ascension Elmbrook Hospital ER with chest pain & vomiting. Diagnosed with esophagitis. Prior to going to ER, called Ascension Medical Group, my healthcare provider, & begged to be seen there. Admonished for calling & told to go to ER several times. Had I been seen at their office instead of the hospital, my bills would have been hundreds of dollars, as opposed to thousands of dollars. Told ER dr. that I hadn't felt well since Feb & felt it was Covid-related. Asked to be tested for Covid each time, but was told they didn't have enough tests, that my symptoms weren't "typical" Covid symptoms, that tests weren't reliable & that if I had been infected, that the antibodies might not still be in my system. $4,000+ later, for July 8th visit, denied by insurance. Appealed & told by them to have provider do code review. Started process Sept. 4, 2020 with multiple letters & calls. Finally received denial from Ascension stating "there was no definitive evidence that you had Covid, but that it was possible that your symptoms are an unusual manifestation of long term sequelae of Covid, given that it is a novel disease." Doesn't the fact that the March 30th visit was coded "contact with and suspected exposure to other viral communicable diseases" show that I had Covid? She also recommended that I contact my insurance company to appeal it. Had she actually read my letters, she would have seen that they were the ones who instructed me to ask for a code review. I emphatically believe I had Covid & am now a "long hauler". We are people who are still experiencing long term side effects of Covid months later due to inflammation in our bodies from the virus. I continue to experience chronic fatigue, breathing issues, body aches, chest pressure & neuropathy. There are many support groups on Facebook & many news articles relating to "long haulers". It is very real & debilitating. As stated by "long haulers", it is bad enough to be infected with Covid, but worse not to be believed. Ascension's motto is "We are advocates for a compassionate and just society through our actions and our words." This is so untrue! There is no compassion in their organization as evidenced by their denial & that so many good physicians, including my PCP, have left Ascension. A financial counselor did contact me to determine if I qualified for community care. I am 63 yrs. old & had lost my job some years ago. Unfortunately, what assets I have, precludes me from charity. My insurance is an Affordable Care Act plan. How affordable is $4,000+? I am a reasonable person & understood that the medical community had to be very careful about spreading Covid to other patients so they had to limit seeing patients in their clinics. Unfortunately I fell through the cracks in the system. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I did not go into 2020 expecting a global pandemic or to be hospitalized not once, not twice but thrice! Two of my three stays were at Elmbrook and I'm pretty happy with the care I received. Both times I started in the ED, where I was seen to quickly, diagnosed and invited to stay just a bit longer for observation. Hooray. Staff wise, everyone I encountered from docs to nurses to housekeeping was compassionate, kind and friendly. I'm confident they did everything correctly to get me to a good result. They do need to update their room furnishings - stripped wood & cracked vinyl isn't cool. And the food fulfills all the "hospital food" stereotypes - seriously not good. But you're not there to wine and dine, and the important parts of your care will be top notch.

I had a terrible experience visiting the emergency room Saturday July 11, 2020. I went to the ER with severe and deep open wounds. I am a barber and have clusters of hair slivers deep, deep within my skin. My hands and feet are buried with years and years of hair packing itself in. I told the ER Doctor Neal Harmelink that I was unaware that the tenderness of the skin surrounding my toes was due to hair, my toes were completely covered with open wounds. I also have a cluster of hair buried so deep and so infected in my hand. I was in Severe pain. And had an obvious infection (see pictures). The Dr spent less than 3 min in the room. Took a far away look at my feet and said, "Nothing needs to be lanced or drained."He then left the room. Later the nurse came back with discharge papers which had the wrong doctor listed, and to follow up with Aspen Orthopedics???? I called and they are a Surgery, Rehab clinic????? I obviously desperately need to see a dermatologist. The last part of the visit was unreal. The nurse told me I could go..... I WAS LEFT WITH GAPING OPEN WOUNDS, I literally had to ASK for cause, bandages and tape. I was left to bandage myself!!! I have had MRSA twice, this hospital took great care of me then. I have a feeling I will get MRSA again as it it now a week later and my hand was left untouched, untreated and severely infected. I was horrified with my experience. I left feeling terrified. This is what my hand looked like when I went in, and this is what my hand looked like when I left. I won't share the pictures of my toes as they look

You tell me... who really wants to write a review about a 3 day hospital stay... unless you're filled with boredom. I was admitted on Wednesday afternoon complaining of pain, and serious fluorescent jaundice, following what was supposed to have a been a simple transjugular liver biopsy. From the moment I awoke in the recovery area I knew something wasn't right but they proceeded to give me two Tylenol and sent me home anyway. By Wednesday (previous to the one mentioned above), I found my way to the ER because I couldn't stand the discomfort any longer. They admitted me for what turned out to be three days, ran all kinds of tests that came back "normal" and decided there was nothing further that could be done over the weekend so I went home. An emergency ERCP was supposed to have been arranged for the upcoming week but I fell through the cracks and nothing occurred for a week. I can't, directly, place blame on anyone specific but (and this wasn't the first time) there was some blatant miscommunication between Elmbrook and GI Associates. Now that we're caught up, I started my second stay, in three weeks, after the ERCP lead to excessive bleeding and my jaundiced color wasn't looking any more normal. It was the same as the prior experience, they didn't know what was causing this disaster or what to do about it. I was on constant observation but, fortunately, fully ambulatory. The crew was an incredible bunch... from the Drs. all the way to the housekeepers. I was silly since I was bored, and had gotten busted trying to leave the floor to go outside for some "air". I thought they'd agree with my logic, which they didn't, and I found myself smoking in the bathroom like an overaged high school kid. Hospitals aren't prisons and they truly don't have a lot of control over an adult wanting to do something... even if it isn't necessarily in their best interests. BTW... I can't stand daytime TV... just a recent observation. So, the staff put up with my silliness and, often, stopped by just because they had a moment. I encouraged them to vent about other patients... good gossip on the 6th floor... and the whole thing was a pleasant experience across the board. My issue is under control now but not cured so I'm sure I'll get to visit a few more times before summer is over!!

This review is solely based on our experience at the family birth center - which was outstanding. There is a very peaceful and quiet atmosphere and the rooms are spacious. But what makes this place stand out is the staff: all the nurses and doctors go above and beyond to make sure you are well taken care off. They all are very friendly, approachable, and willing to share their knowledge. If you are about to have a baby, take a tour at Elmbrook and see for your self, what this place is all about. One last thing: they also offer you a "romantic" dinner for two or a family Pizza party the day after the birth...!
