This was the worst experience I have ever had at any business in my life. I’d give zero stars if it was allowed. I brought my large dog in for a hot spot on his tail. I called last week as soon as the irritation started. They could only get me in today. I treated it as well as I could with over the counter medication. It is inflamed and is hurting him. I explained this to the nurse. The vet/owner came in no conversation said hold his head he grabbed my dogs tail forcefully and pulled it. My dog whined, yelped and growled while I held his head. The vet jumped back and said well I’m done here. I said what do you mean? He preceded to tell me how untrained my dog is and when I tried to say that he was in pain. He cut me off and said he is untrained and 99% of dogs would let him examine, shave and scrape the wound. He said if I didn’t like it I could leave!! I was at a loss for words. I tried to say he is a super nice dog, well behaved and friendly. He’s in pain. The vet disagreed said he’s our property so it’s our fault he isn’t trained properly. He said I could drop him off and they would sedate him. But that’s it. He said I don’t have time for this. He was so unprofessional, I couldn’t believe it. He continued on until my teenage daughter and I were in tears. My daughter wanted to leave. The vet said you want antibiotics or not? I said I need something. My dog is sick. I brought him in for help. He said I’ll get you antibiotics or you can leave. My daughter was so upset she went to the car. I paid $111 for antibiotics and to be treated terribly but truly if I could have left and got antibiotics elsewhere, I would have. I have heard horror stories about this vet. I have friends that are personal friends with this man. Raved about him. So I put caution to the wind giving him a chance. Never again. I will tell everyone that will listen not to take their pets to this man.

When it comes to an emergency, don't bother. I drove out to Duluth for an evaluation due to a high fever. Duluth Dr. emailed the Bay Area & me the results with a recommendation to follow up within a day or two. I called, and the staff said they are understaffed and won't take her if she needs to be seen to take her back out there! Receptionist "She just started antibiotics, and it would be pointless." I explained what the Duluth Dr said, and she never discussed it with Dr. Haukus. It was brushed off like it didn't matter. I called again and was told to take her elsewhere. So I did and had much better service. I've been going to BAAH for 4 years & was just there not even 3 months ago for a wellness with both my dogs. (I brought my newly adopted dog in to establish & get vaccines. Haukus seemed disgusted that he wasn't fixed. I told him I just got him a couple of weeks ago and planned in it in the upcoming months. He came off as irritated & said you need to do it now.)I'm now 2 ER visits in & my dog ended up going back to the ER now for the 3rd time. This time at PAWS just outside of wausau. This facility was amazing!!! They got my dog in to a specialist the next day to get her CT done. Dr. McDaniel at Madison vetenary specialist has been there every step of the way. She reached out to Dr Haukus and explained that my dog needed to continue her medications and asked him to fill them so I wouldn't have to drive the 5 hours to Madison. He said that he wouldn't and his staff didn't call me!! Dr McDaniel called me directly and explained the conversation & another option. Like WOW, my dog was treated on 4 different occasions, and all the paperwork was sent to him, and he still said NO. He didn't have to do anything but collect more of my money. The staff is rude and the Dr doesn't give a s**t about your pet. I'm over this place. He is only nice when it comes to wellness visits $$$$$.

Dr Haukaas is the best!!! Over the last 22 years, Daisy is our third dog that Dr. Haukaas has cared for, he has consistently shown compassion, kindness and most importantly, he keeps updated with the latest medical information. A couple days ago, our one year old cavalier, Daisy May was very sick. Unfortunately, it was after hours when we called. True to his nature, he called back soon afterwards to have a discussion regarding her condition and gave us some advice to help her through the night. The next morning his nurse called to check on her but, unfortunately, she was not getting better, so he suggested some medication, and to call again the next day. Unfortunately, Daisy was still not getting better, but again, Dr.Haukaas was great, he got us in right away. Daisy saw him and wagged her tail…she loves him❤️. He ran some tests, patiently answered ALL our questions and we left. True to his expertise, Daisy had her “ skip, back in her step “ the next day. Yes, it will take a week for a full recovery, but, there were no unnecessary tests or costs. Daisy loves Dr. Haukaas and we are extremely grateful for his care.

Called there for an emergency this morning to get my dog who had a gash over a foot long. I was told they wouldn’t be able to help til this afternoon since they were booked on appointments! Lost my business, I’ll never be there again! Ashland area veterinary clinic took him in immediately, and got him taken care of. I recommend them to anyone who wants a real vet for something other than a simple shot!

Bay Area Animal Hospital is a top quality vet in the Ashland/U.P. of Michigan area. Well worth the 35 minute drive from MI. for the service. I highly recommend Dr. Erik Haukaas and his staff. They take great care of our Devon Rex cats. Our kittens are well taken care of there and our oldest cat(16 years old) has been receiving top quality senior care. From kittens to seniors, they are the best.

Took my cat here for a checkup and the facility is very nice. We did not have to wait more than a few minutes to see the doctor and he was very knowledgeable. Staff very nice and clean rooms and lobby.

This vet is an absolute jag off. Rude, verbally abusive, condescending, I could go on and on. If you have a pet that is anything less than perfect, I would suggest going elsewhere.

Bay Area Animal Hospiyal and Pet Resort and Boarding is the best place to bring your pet. What I like most about hospital is that when uoi bring in your pet to be seen, your loving pet is seen by the veternarian, not a techncian. The Doctor talks with you and answers all my questions. Other places I have taken my dog, I never see the vet. When I ask if the vet could call me with questions, I have, rarely do you hear back from the vet. Everyone is so kind.I use day boarding frequently. The staff is so nice, caring, and it shows by all of them, they love their work and love animals. The hospital and day spa are so clean and I know in my heart, my dog is getting the BEST care. They are all so professional . Thank you to ALL of you.

We adopted a 9 year old English Setter from an out of town animal shelter. We brought Rhemi home only to realize she had breast cancer and was probably the reason she was brought to the shelter in the first place. We had a consult with the veterinarian recommended by the shelter and they told us to just 'bring her home and give her a good-end-of-life'. We were very disappointed and brought her to Dr. Eric Haukaas. He performed surgery, removed 2 malignant breast tumors, and Rhemi has been great ever since! That was 3 1/2 years ago...

Love this place! They are very good to my pet--taking the time to answer all our questions and providing timely care whenever we need it. Dr. Haukaas is patient and kind with our aging pet and always has practical approaches and ideas to help.

Absolutely terrible. Abusive beyond belief. I left in tears. If I could give zero stars I would. Treated my dog and I like monsters. I paid him so I could leave. My dog was scared of him, he sat on her then blamed her for being aggressive. We will never be going back. Would not recommend unless you like to be abused and talked down to. Love that the staff just hear it happen too. Disgusting. He needs to be shut down. My dog was terrified the rest of the day after the appointment.

Dr Haukaas is the best with cats. He’s gentle and cat friendly. Been with this vet for almost 20 years
