I've been doing my taxes with H&R block for many many years now. I love how they seek the best possible way of helping a person out and I love how I can use my tax return to pay them. The Emerald Card with the advance payment is super nice and how it can send messages to your cell phone or email about the total left on your Emerald Card.

Never open when they say they are going to be, don't answer the phones, can't give break downs on what they are actually trying to charge for, overcharge compared to private tax consultants who can get you way more return, and are not consistent from one agent to the next.Update: The office we filed our taxes at actually abruptly closed, leaving my husband's paper taxes inside, unable to pay for them, and file them. We had to file a complaint with the headquarters who had to send someone to the office to retrieve the papers and file them at a separate location, past the deadline. No apology, no accountability, nothing.

When H&R Block did my taxes in 2022 they recorded my SS number incorrectly on all of my forms. Consequently, when my payment was sent in to the IRS, my payment was applied to someone elses account. When learning of this in May by receiving a letter from the IRS about the late fees and penalties I was actively incurring, I contacted H&R Block. After 5 months they have still not fixed the problem. I finally took things into my own hands, contacted the IRS and had this taken care of...no thanks to the folks at H&R Block. Not only was their service horrible, but there is no ability to contact them. They open up for tax time and then disappear. I could not be more dissatisfied.

If you are going to use H&R Block, please be very careful. Here is a summary of my experience: (yes, this is actually skipping a lot of details in my attempt to be brief!) In January 2022, I gave 3 years of tax info to a preparer here in Appleton, WI who said she'd get back to me in a week or so. She didn't. In the summer of 2022, a different person called me, asking if I had info for them to do my taxes. I said I'd already given it to them and made an appt. Morning of the appt I received a call from a third person who said she was the office manager and asked if I had files to upload. I told her they already had the info. I went to my appt, found out the branch office was closed, had to call and get the address of the open office, none of which had been explained to me. I got there and was told by the office manager that they couldn't find my files. After weeks of ridiculous phone calls and excuses, I filed a complaint with BBB. They followed up with H&R Block. A month later, I checked with BBB on progress and received the corporate H&R Block response which was basically that they were closing this. I replied that I did not consider it to be closed until I got my files back. A few days later, I got a call from the new H&R district manager who said the files were gone, apologized, and asked me what they could do to help. He gave me a year of free credit/ fraud reporting. The next day or so, he called to tell me they found my files at an offsite permanent storage facility, after he asked them to return the last couple of batches of files that had been sent up. I drove over and got my files. Although I appreciate his taking the time to track them down and return them to me, I can't recommend this company to anyone. Tax preparers should be the gold standard of efficiency, security and honesty, and to me this company appeared more like lead. So if you use them, stay in close touch with them and keep backups of everything you give them.

If I could leave a zero I would. I am writing this review on behalf of my mom who has been going to H & R Block for 15 years. She never had a problem before, she trusted them and spoke highly of her previous encounters. This year they were less than professional, lied to my mom and failed to do her taxes on time. Dodging phone calls and emails. Gave her the run around for months. Stating they filed an extension when in fact they did not. We reached out to corporate with no acknowledgment.My mom was able to get all of her tax forms back from the office, her forms were still in the filing cabinet up front behind the receptionist, papers were never even touched!!!Shame on the employees at this location and up the chain.
