About War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground
War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground is a small, peaceful, and free camping spot located in West Virginia, offering a quiet retreat close to the New River Gorge and Babcock State Park. The campground features about 6 to 10 sites, each equipped with picnic tables and fire pits, and is situated at the top of a mountain peak, providing a refreshing breeze and stunning starry night skies. The sites are close to each other but remain secluded enough for a relaxing experience. A portapotty on site is very clean, and campers are encouraged to bring their own water and toilet facilities, especially since no other amenities are available. The area is great for outdoor activities like hiking and off-road trails, with some reviews noting the nearby rivers suitable for kayaking—though caution is advised for those unfamiliar with river conditions. Cell service is limited but can be improved with boosters, with AT&T working best and Starlink available for internet access. The campground is ideal for those seeking solitude, as it tends to be less crowded, especially during weekdays or off-peak times. However, visitors should be prepared for limited facilities and potential encounters with local residents, who may not always be as welcoming. Overall, this site offers a beautiful, quiet, and scenic camping experience perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy nature, stars, and nearby adventures in a remote setting.

It’s free! No amenities and not too many campsites in the area, so it wasn’t horribly loud with lots of people. We were able to snag a spot on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend too. I’d go back if in the area again. Starlink would work here. Some cell worked with a booster. AT&T worked best.

Nice little campground, firepit and picnic table at each site. The sites are really close to each other though. The stars are incredibly bright here, everything is just beautiful. Great hiking. No restrooms

Further away than the other campgrounds. But less people. ??
