Come for the railfanning, stay for the history. I first learned about Harpers Ferry, WV while sourcing stock footage for work. I came across the same clip in a rail safety ad, which made me look up directions to Harpers Ferry from DC. The historic park/town is served by the very MARC trains that pass outside my DC window each afternoon. You can describe Harpers Ferry as *deceptively* close because it's a 90 minute train ride, with planes flying into Dulles close enough to make out the airline. Looking for hotels there, Stonehouse Bed & Breakfast was the first that came up, with great reviews. Chris was very helpful and responsive via text and email. I booked the Top Room, which was $170 for a night including taxes. The quaint B&B has three accessible floors, as the family naturally lives onsite. The first floor is the main entrance with the common/dining areas, and the patio overlooking Maryland Heights and the Potomac/Shenandoah Rivers. The second floor has more rooms, one with a full balcony. And the third floor is the Top Room, with windows overlooking each side of the vintage building. If you Google pictures of Harpers Ferry, Stonehouse is in nearly all of the shots, since the balconies are front and center of the skyline. The town itself is like a real life snow globe. But the B&B, the litany of museums, eateries and shoppes around it, as well as the train station directly across the street make it an overall ideal place to stay, be it for hiking, or for something else: A love of trains is what brought me to Stonehouse, so take note that rail traffic can be heavy in certain times of the day. But the light rumbles also helped put me to sleep in the already soft, cozy bed. A container of water was provided, and while glasses should have been cleaned of dust first, it was still a really nice touch. The room also had playing cards, ear plugs, plenty books and a whole lounge chair. Checkin was a simple set of instructions at the door with my name on it, with checkout simply being your absence at the appropriate time. In my case, I only booked an overnight stay, getting in at 8pm and leaving around 6:30am, with checkout/checkin being the traditional 11am/4pm. While I didn't stay for complementary breakfast, I did catch a stellar sunrise between the mountains, as well as nature footage from the neighboring park. All of that to say, I definitely look to return to Stonehouse B&B later this year.

We loved our stay at the Stonehouse and can’t wait to come back! My husband and I stayed as a treat to celebrate his birthday, on our Pgh to DC bike trip. We absolutely loved the ‘New’ room. It was so nice to sit on the porch and gaze out over the valley. Plus I love watching the trains roll in and out of town. If you’re not a train person, they even have ear plugs for you. But we love them! Cass made us a delicious hearty breakfast that fueled us up very well for our last 60 miles on the trail. I also really enjoyed talking with her. Stonehouse has such charming and historic character, with great modern updates. Truly looking forward to coming back.

The host, Chris was on vacation when I stayed, but Cass still makes great breakfasts! Quirky old house with floors that lean a bit and doors that might need a bit of help to close....I love old houses and found this one charming. If you're biking on the C&O it's a good spot - it's near the bottom of the hill. Chris lets you store bikes on the deck off the kitchen, where it's covered and they won't be bothered.

The B&B could not have been in a better location! We stayed in the New Room for a two night get away. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was quite large and the shower was great. Can not say enough about the private balcony. High enough that the view of the water was beautiful. Even when the street below was packed we did nor really hear it. The chairs were comfortable and it was delightful to sit outside and read. We brought a white noise machine which ended up being exactly what we needed with the train so close. The only thing I would do differently would be to bring an eye mask for sleeping. The room has skylights and a ton of natural light even with the blinds pulled down so if you prefer darkness to sleep a mask would be a good idea. The breakfast made by the owner was good. There is a great coffee shop a few doors up the street that we visited both days. Parking on site was a huge bonus.Rooms: New Room was very comfortable. Loved the private bathroom and could not ask for more with the balcony.Nearby activities: Tons to do within walking distance ?Safety: Never felt anything less than completely safe. Seemed well lit after dark when walking near the water and pedestrian Bridge as well as in lower town.Walkability: Quite literally in the middle of everything from the restaurants, one next door and several within 5 minutes walk. To shopping, walking trails and all the historic buildings. We were there from Sunday to Tuesday and never used the car.Food & drinks: Breakfast was great. Egg frittata, fresh sausage, buttered toast, fresh fruit bowl.Noteworthy details: Security was nice with a keypad lock. We were provided a code for the front door as well as a key for our room.

We stayed in the Gray room it had spider webs in it, the floor was dirty, the bathroom had paint peeling on the ceiling. The house as a whole was not very clean and the breakfast was nothing to write home about. My boyfriend doesn't drink coffee and wasn't offered anything else to drink, he had to go get a bottle of water out of our room to drink.Walkability: Very close to everything

Stonehouse B&B is at a great location in the lower part of town. Close to the shops and restaurants. AND!! You can't beat the view we had from the New Room...just breathtaking. Fantastic breakfasts both mornings we were there. Chris and the housekeeper offered great hospitality. Super affordable given the ameneties. We've already booked our next visit and I'm positive we'll be back many more times.

This cozy and cute B&B is in the center of Harpers Ferry and was an absolute joy to stay in. We had a lovely time in the New Room. Chris and his family were great and went above and beyond. We accidentally left our headphone there, and Chris was amazing, he found them and shipped them back to us quickly. Would highly recommend staying here!

Our bed was so lumpy and uneven, it was painful. I tried sleeping on the floor. Finally, I went downstairs to find a couch and ended up in an armchair. In the morning, our host walked in, saw me there, and didn't even pause to introduce himself, let alone ask why I was sitting alone in the dark. Breakfast was minimal and forgettable, with none of the effort or presentation one would expect of a good B&B. But honestly, it didn't matter, because we couldn't wait to get out of there. There aren't many lodging options in the old part of Harper's Ferry, but location alone is not enough to recommend this place.

If you've never been to Harpers Ferry, you're in for quite the surprise. It's not really a town. It's like a dollhouse museum. Only 300 people live there and it exists as a pure tourist attraction. And right in the middle is this wonderful b&b. The building itself is, I don't know, 150 years old ... so you know be understanding. But this 2 day stop was one of the best we've ever done. Love to hike and the views are stunning. If you are at all into American history, there's a ton of Civil War history around you. And do visit Antietam nearby, like 30 mins away. Our ground floor room was quite large, comfortable, and you couldn't ask for a better location.

My wife and I stayed two nights in the New Room for a weekend mini-cation and we fell in love with the place. The room was charming and the atmosphere was perfect. Very clean and temperature controlled. The bed was very comfortable and the furnishings were charming and not typical of an old bed and breakfast, as other reviews have noted as well. The private en-suite bathroom was huge, clean, and with a large walk in shower. We had our own covered private balcony overlooking the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where they converge, and a beautiful view of the lower town along Potomac Street. A porch swing and two comfortable padded patio chairs and a small table to relax with a bottle of wine, also with folding chairs. You won't get a better view in town from your room anywhere else. Location is right smack dab in the lower town and within mere steps of restaurants, pubs, and the historic national park sites. Nothing further than a 30 second to 2 minute walk. You won't find better parking in town and it comes with the room and you park directly behind the building. But you probably won't need your car as everything is so close.Chris, the owner, is an awesome dude and fun to talk with, and the breakfasts he prepares are delicious and rival any 5 star hotel chef breakfast. We were impressed from top to bottom at this bed and breakfast and highly recommend it to all and will return. I can't think of one negative thing about the Stonehouse Bed and breakfast.
