Specialties: Miyoko is a curly hair specialist and she really knows her stuff

May 2023 by Isabelle H.
I got my hair done by Miyoko on May 2. We messaged about my hair goals prior. Day of- We discussed what I wanted- curly cut & rooty balayage. Before, I sent her inspiration pics, most of which were of myself after a cut & color, so I knew that those results were achievable. I told her I knew I had dead ends but wanted to keep length. She asked about color & I asked her to refer to the pics, & keep it rooty & an ash tone. She had no further questions & didn't stop to clarify anything else with me. She didn't check with me about how much length she was cutting or if the color placement/tone was correct. Before she started, she offered to "teach me her curly routine". I agreed bc no stylist had offered that to me before. This "lesson" was nothing I didn't already know. As she styled my hair, I sat in horror at how much length she cut, & how the color, tone, & style was nothing like the pics I sent. I told her I was surprised at the short length, she said me it was "just bc your hair is curly" This is incorrect, she took away all of my length. The pics I sent her of myself all featured me as an ashy balayaged blonde with a money piece, & dark roots & bright ends. She didn't do this. Instead of rooty, she brought the color to the roots, instead of ashy, the color is a warm, brassy tone. There was no money piece, & no bright ends. It is the worst color & cut I have ever gotten. I was too shocked to even come up with anything to say in person, for fear I would cry. When it was time to pay, she broke down the costs- & to make this worse, she says it was extra for the curly cut bc it's my first one & she had to charge for the "lesson" She offered the lesson, & if she would have been transparent that it was an extra cost, I would've declined. When I questioned this, she backtracked & said she would have charged me the same amount since it was my first curly cut with her. I paid the bill, still shocked, & drove home in tears. I regret not saying more in person or refusing to pay for service. I am out a ton of money. After talking with my trusted stylists back home, & showing them pics of my goal hair & how it turned out, they were shocked and encouraged me to seek a refund since I no longer trusted her to correct it. One stylist told me it looked like she used box dye! I reached out to her and asked and she refused, but a refund was the only acceptable resolution seeing that she botched the services so bad, & all trust was gone. Throughout our conversation afterward, she was unapologetic, defended her work, & inflexible about a refund. She also pointed the finger at me, saying that I didn't make request clear bc I didn't say that I wanted dark roots & a money piece. I don't how much more clear you could be by providing example pics of yourself with those things as the reference! When I complained about the tone & even sent her a pic showing her how brassy it was, she said it was "just lighting". My hair should look good in ALL LIGHTING. She said it was all a "miscommunication" My communication was clear, my pictures were clear, & she as the stylist has the responsibility to clear up any confusion on her part before she permanently alters someone's hair. She did offer to fix it, which I explained to her was not an option. I asked "how can you fix my hair when you won't even admit that there is a problem?" She wouldn't admit fault or take accountability. I was calm in my correspondence with her, never said anything rude, kept it factual & just begged for a refund. She refused & "stands by her work" The cherry on top was that she, after being defensive & inflexible with me, told me that I was "harassing" & was "namecalling" This appeared to be a way to shift the conversation away from the issue at hand, & create an uncomfortable & extreme environment, so that

Reviewing on behalf of my girlfriend, but wow, truly the most awful cut I've ever seen from a salon. The photos speak for themselves. GF came home from the cut with Miyoko and something seemed off so I asked her to put her hair up in a ponytail. See first picture. CHRIST I'm pretty sure Supercuts would have done a significantly better job. I told her to ask for a refund, but the stylist offered to fix. GF comes back from the fix and see second picture. Just abysmal. Negative stars for this place and stylist. For the price, I would have expected some level of experience.

We see Miyoko at Tonic Salon and she absolutely is a talented hair artist with a specialty in textured hair. She has a pleasant demeanor, is super easy to work with and talk to about your hair goals and desires. She uses top of the line products like Oribe (she has many other brands too). She is conveniently located close to U Village and has a really cute Salon that's comfortable and inviting. I highly recommend her whether you're looking to reinvent your style or maintain what you already have. The services rendered were a haircut, deep conditioning with olaplex, toning and highlighting. Cost is $$$.

I really wanted to like this salon. It's walking distance from home and it has good reviews. I waited 2 weeks for an appointment and I was excited. You see... my hair was down to my waist and I was ready to go shorter (long bob). Upon arrival, Andrea stated she was about 15 minutes behind and asked that I either hang out in the salon or go run an errand and circle back. I grabbed a coffee from the nearby cafe instead and returned 20 minutes later as she was finishing up with her client. I did not see Andrea sterilized the chair before I sat down (thankfully I'm vaccinated). I told her what I wanted (modern long bob). I explained that my hair is thick and coarse. I wanted to give her enough creative "freedom" to make my hair look good. I had A LOT of hair to play with. A lot. The cut was going okay until I saw Andrea pull out thinning shears. I've never had a professional hair dresser use thinning shears... but again, creative freedom. Andrea asked if my front baby hairs was due to breakage. I explained it was my baby hair and maybe due to some breakage. She asked if I'd like to blend my hair a bit to even it out. I said yes (in hindsight, I totally should have said no). She finished her cut, and what appeared to be a last minute afterthought, she tried to give me bangs (?) but only gave it one quick blunt cut. Upon inspection the morning after and styling my hair the way I would do it, I noticed that Andrea gave me several blunt cuts that were not blended nor even (see photo). I also noticed that my bob was not even. It tapered toward the back (see photo). It was obvious that the top layer of hair was much shorter than the bottom layer. It also appeared that the use of thinning shears created A LOT of fly aways on the top layer. I WAS NOT HAPPY. I called Andrea before the salon opened and asked her to fix it that same day. She apologized that I didn't like my hair. Andrea was not available and neither were her two other hair dressers. Frankly, I was relieved. I asked for a full refund and Andrea quickly abided. I really hope this was a one off. I ended up finding another salon that had availability that same day (for the same price!). They cut off another 1.5 inches and fixed my bangs. I love my cut now. It's straight and blended and sleek. Maybe you'll have better luck at this salon.

Finally decided to get a COVID cut here a few weeks ago, and the service here was superb! I ended up arriving super early, but the ladies who work here reassured me of my actual appointment time. I would recommend coming here if you want to support a local small business and get a descent haircut.

I reached out to Tonic to schedule a cut and color and was invited to come in for a consult. I immediately knew that Tonic was a gem as Andrea took no pause in handing me the reigns, allowing me to express my concerns, desires, and hopes for my hair. Today I had the appointment and -- omg --- is this MY hair? That raggedy mane I walked in with has been transformed - love, love, love it. The atmosphere is comfortable, the location convenient, and Andrea is a well-seasoned, competent stylist that can manifest your vision. Finally found my stylist, folks! If you're looking to go get your glam, get going to Tonic, NE Seattle!

I always have the most fabulous hair experience with Maria at Tonic Salon. She gives me a signature cut every time with highlight and color that is a bright and beautiful blonde. My hair is complimented everywhere I go. She is a styling whiz let me tell you. Super knowledgeable, on-trend. The whole enchilada. I trust her completely. The products she recommends are spot-on perfect. I'm able to keep my hair looking great in between appointments, something I used to struggle to do. The friendly service and attentiveness Maria gives is bar none. I wouldn't go to anyone else. The salon is comfortable and cozy. All the stylists are smiling and friendly, and they seriously are popping out some gorgeous hair. I'm so happy they carry Oribe! And I can't forget to mention how much I appreciate the easy street parking. I personally think Tonic Salon is the best kept salon secret in Seattle. I highly recommend you get in to see Maria for your next hair appointment. You'll love her, and you'll love your hair!

I love the coziness of Tonic Salon along side the professionalism. Maria B is now at Tonic which makes the entire experience exactly what I need. I've been a client of Maria B for over 9 years now and will follow her wherever she goes (excellent color and cut!) but having her at Tonic is an added bonus! I not only have an excellent stylist, but now I have a lovely experience as soon as I step into the salon!

I had my first visit to Tonic Salon on Saturday since my favorite hair stylist, Amber had transferred there from another salon in Bellevue. Amber is the only person I trust with my hair. After so many years of bad haircuts from other stylists, I knew I'd have to follow her when she moved to a Seattle location. Not only is she super sweet, but she is really knowledgeable. I can give her 3 different photos, and she'll deliver exactly what I want each time. I couldn't recommend her more!

I had my first visit to Tonic Salon about two weeks ago and could not have been more impressed! The salon is chic but warm and inviting. I felt instantly comfortable there. My stylist who I've been with for over a decade, recently started taking clients there and I'm very excited to visit this salon going forward. Amber Stevens is my hairdresser and I would follow her anywhere. She's just the very best there is. She is extremely skilled in hair design (cutting) as well as color. I have never, in over 10 years been unhappy or even underwhelmed with my hair. Amber always takes so much care to make sure my hair is perfect. She also cares about her clients and this is evident in the loyal following she has. Amber is amazing!!
