Not only does this Safeway price gouge because it is the only large chain grocery store in the area, but they also have a new policy whereby you cannot bring any bag into the store. You would think that with a policy like that there would be a safe location to temporarily store any baggage you might have brought with you if you happen to be stopping off at the grocery store on your way home from work or school. There is nowhere to safely check your bag. There is only a grocery cart at the front of the store where you can place any baggage you might be carrying that is 100% unsupervised, meaning that anyone could walk by and steal your belongings with zero repercussions. For anyone who has the option, I would recommend going to Ba Mien grocery store for vegetables, they have better prices. Individuals who have the luxury of driving would be better off at one of the Safeways on Rainier, or driving further south and going to WinCo. This particular Safeway manages to deliver a subpar shopping experience every time I go there.

I’ve been coming to the Safeway in Othello for over a decade now because it’s close to the station, and I often stop by after work to grab groceries. Recently, I noticed a new sign that says backpacks are not allowed in the store. I was taken aback by this policy because it feels like I’m being stereotyped.
I work at a warehouse facility, and I may not always look like your typical shopper—but I’m a loyal customer. I understand the challenges retail stores face with theft, as I used to work in retail myself. I fully support taking steps to prevent theft, but any policy should be clearly written, enforced consistently, and applied fairly across all locations.
The current approach feels arbitrary. Asking customers to leave their backpacks in a shopping cart near the entrance is not only unprofessional—it’s a liability. There’s no secure system in place, and the security guard’s enforcement seems inconsistent and unclear.
If theft is truly the concern, make sure your security cameras are functioning properly and address those who are actually stealing. It’s disappointing to feel targeted as a paying customer. I used to enjoy shopping at this location because the staff were friendly and welcoming, but lately, it feels like the focus is more on products than on the people who shop here.
Please address this issue properly. Loyal customers deserve better.

I was wrong
Pretty bad when u have to look in mirror and see that I am the problem digital and member and everything works fine if u use correct phone number and have the same card to go with correct number I am so so so sorry and I hope I am forgiven and this store is near where I live and even after me being a jerk they still give the up and most caring attitude and the security is also kind and always says hello and goodbye
Please please please forgive me
I was wrong on everything and thank u for still letting me be part of the community of this store

This safeway isn't the best. It was convenient today

Look, I'm fine with stores that have bag checks, but if you have any backpack, even a small one, they force you to leave it in a pile next to the front door, completely unsecured.
No way.
Especially if I've ended up there after an evening walk, after dark the parking lot gets sketch. The Columbia City and Rainier Beach Safeways get a little sketch too, but neither of those force bag checks.

This location, which is conveniently located immediately off of the train line, will not allow backpacks. I understand that this may be due to thefts. However, placing my bag right next to the door and then leaving the area unmonitored tells me your inventory is more important than my belongings. This is my first ever review. I will not be returning.

Great, small, local grocery store. Lovely staff. Unusually friendly security who help people with their carts and always have a smile for anyone who is not making mischief.

Needed groceries, got groceries, what else do you really need? Reasonably quick check out. Will shop here again if I need to.

I have never been to a store as bad as this one. Both customers and employees are exhibiting rude behavior. If you happen to be black, security guards will profile you. The food is stored in conditions that are not hygienic. The parking lot is in a state of disrepair, and people are driving recklessly.

It's a Safeway. Nothing especially bad or good about it. The parking lot is a little tight and it's usually pretty popular. High amount of crazy people and drivers here especially on a warm day.
Update: 20 May 2024 - they have removed the self checkout and the lines can and will get bad.

bad customer service. Workers walking around, reject to help customers. The African American lady works at this location is so mean talking to customers. Never come to Safeway again

I’m rarely in this area and this store really stands out, but not in any good way. This time I went, and the 3 cashiers are so awfully chatty and nice to each other, so they can be nice. But to the customers they are so rude and unfriendly. I was watching my cashier be so glum to all the customers so I knew when it was my turn what I was going to get. Not a word, nor telling me what my total was, which is like, the most basic part of the job. I tried a friendly Thank You, but I knew I was only going to get an unfriendly scowl in response. No offer for a receipt. Nothing. Those pesky customers. Wouldn’t your job be so much better if you didn’t have to deal with any? As I was leaving, they all excitedly started talking in their own language. They are here to gossip but I don’t think they like the job at all. It’s really best to avoid this place and hopefully they will go out of business soon

Review 1: Frustrating experience with Starbucks deals in Safeway app
I've been disappointed with the experience of trying to redeem Starbucks deals advertised in the Safeway app. These deals frequently don't work at checkout. The advertised discount doesn't apply, and the coffee scans as the regular price. This has happened to me on multiple occasions at the Madison location and other Safeway stores.
This creates a bait-and-switch situation. I'm lured in by the app's advertised deals, only to be charged the full price at checkout. It would be much better if the app only showed deals that are actually redeemable in-store.
I hope Safeway can address this issue and ensure their app accurately reflects the deals available at checkout.
Review 2: Inaccurate Scanning and Double-Charging at Safeway Checkout
While I've enjoyed some delicious finds in Safeway's bakery and hot food sections, I've encountered concerning issues with checkout accuracy. On two separate occasions, I've noticed double charges for items after reviewing my receipt at home. Additionally, there have been instances where scanned items didn't match what I was buying, resulting in a higher price than expected.
This inaccuracy in the scanning system can be frustrating for customers and lead to overspending. Safeway should investigate these checkout issues to ensure customers are getting billed fairly and accurately.

Waited in line for 45 min to get 3 items. Terrible service.
