Salvation Army got me through the hardest time of my life. They welcomed me into their chapel for service, allowed me to cry, to stay silent, to ramble! The lunch they provide is amazing! Everyday it's a special dish. Delicious. The activities are insanely fun. Bingo Wednesday, karaoke Friday, Diamond art, ceramics, Bible study, ASL.. so much! The food bank keeps you nourished! They do their best to stay full and to never let anyone go without a meal! The staff and volunteers are kind, compassionate, helpful people that just spread joy everywhere they go.

Since the first time I entered their recreation center after seeing the sign out front for Bingo, I went to check it out. Their rec center is open to all ages and during the weekdays, a free meal is offered from 12pm - 1pm. Be careful that if you are a minute or two late, you’ll miss out on getting a free meal. Activities usually begin at 1pm. It was nice to know this is available because I didn’t hear about this anywhere or seen this until I saw the sign outside. Many places have age and family restrictions where adults without children cannot receive resources immediately or at all because the others are prioritized. So this was a pleasant surprise at first, however, there are many people that I’ve met there who are discriminatory and have caused problems mistreating me in several ways. Only a few members were staff, but the others have been from toxic community members. When keeping to myself or only a few people, then my times there have been pleasant. I still visit and keep things cordial to get what I need, but the hours have been changing quite a bit with more closures. This year, the rec center has been closed for a day to a week at a time so there has been a struggle trying to acquire resources. While trying to seek shelter, I had left messages on their voicemail in which I did not receive an answer. However, when I needed a job, I was referred to their job openings on their website while visiting their rec center and was able to get a job in a short amount of time during last year’s holiday season as a bell ringer, which I am very grateful for. It was fun and efficient in the process of getting needed supplies for the job to get done. My Manager Ryan Miller was very professional and did make sure that I received my paychecks in a timely manner while working around my schedule to ensure my financial needs were met.He is also part of the church service on Sundays and invited me to their program and other events. During the Christmas Season, they do a beautiful Silent Night Prayer and offer gifts to their attendees.Their Food Bank has helped me during desperate times, but their hours have been changing a lot throughout the year that it can be difficult to keep up with, especially without transportation. Delivery is not available. There are food bank cards offered now that you get from their office as they updated their policy and procedures. It may take awhile as I had to wait four weeks for my card so I am unsure how long it would take a new food seeker to get one now.I’ve been denied food here a few times this year, but they have been able to offer food to me most of the time that I have gone here for a few years on and off. Their new schedule is now three days open schedule from 10am - 1pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. On Wednesdays, they now only give food and clothing for appointments only, which I am unsure why. After a few tries of visiting the food bank last week, I was able to get some food to help stock my pantry. The staff is friendly and they are willing to help pack your vehicle as well if needed. There are boxes of food available for people to pick through, but a concern I’ve witnessed is that the food does look spoiled in mass quantities. As shown in one of the photos I’ve added, there are many bananas and zucchinis that look rotten. There’s also clothing offered when there is any. I’ve donated here a few times over the years as well bringing in large trash bags full of gently used and new clothing. There’s usually some for children as well, not all sizes are guaranteed, but it is helpful when needing something when you have nothing as an option. They helped clothe me after I had all of my belongings stolen. I was able to still manage with a broken zipper jacket, but was also able to get new shoes and bras too.

Their driver frequently illegally parks for days at a time neat 17th and between Tacoma and Yakima in Tacoma. It makes the neighborhood a lot less safe because people can't see around the corner and it turns the streets into blind corners.Train your drivers to be courteous and follow the dang law
