Amazing friendly staff! Extremely clean practices. Bloodworks Northwest emails you a follow up where your blood makes a difference (about 2 months) and just makes you feel you made an impact in the world.

I've been donating blood here for a few years now and have always had a good experience. The staff are friendly and competent. I have tricky veins and on the whole they've definitely done better than most as far as getting a successful poke on the first try. Selection of post donation cookies and snacks are always well stocked.

They are currently only taking appointments due to covid. My girlfriend had just scheduled an appointment a couple hours before we went in and they had almost all of their slots open. I walked in and asked if I could schedule an appointment, and the male staff member at the front decided to get a snooty tone because I hadn't already scheduled one. They are able to schedule at the desk, FYI, he just didn't feel like doing so. I just walked out and will not be donating with them again.

This past summer news came out that blood banks were getting desperately low on all types of blood and so I decided it was time to start donating whole blood. A quick Google search yielded a pop-up location in Shelton which is closer to home than Olympia where one of the main donation centers is located. So it wasn't long before an account was created and appointment made. The morning of the appointment you have to take a short online survey called Quick Pass to help them ensure your blood is safe to add to the supply. Upon completing Quick Pass, a QR code is generated that you use when checking in at the donation location to expedite the process. After checking in, a technician (they might be nurses) will take you into a private setting where your identity is again checked and you will probably be asked a few more questions. Then a finger p**** to check your glucose level and BP and you're all set to give blood, possibly blood that will save someone's life. You'll be taken to a comfortable chair and they'll ask which arm? After that you'll be given something like a ball to squeeze while they look for the perfect spot. Once satisfied they have that ideal location, a thorough cleaning with an antiseptic swipe, and it's time to insert the needle. Until yesterday, I have barely felt a thing, just a slight poke like getting a shot. That was it. This last donation WAS NOT painful, just a small sting that goes away in a minute or two. No big deal. After that you squeeze the ball every 10 seconds or so until the collection bag is full, and for those that are queasy when looking at such things, it's completely out of sight. The 'nurse' will tell you when you done and start disconnecting things and pulling out the needle. A bandage and or wrap will be applied and then you'll move to another 'observation' area where free drinks and cookies are available. They want you to stay there for 10-15 minutes just in case and then you're on your way. They will be more than happy to schedule your next donation but your body needs 60 days to fully recover when giving whole blood before donating again. Also, no heavy lifting or exercising for 12 hours. This is a great way to give back to those in need of life giving blood and doesn't cost you a thing except a little gas money, a tiny bit of discomfort, and a little time. It's very satisfying too because you know you're helping someone. And you get something tangible out of the donation too. A free COVID-19 test and the results of the test will be mailed directly to you within 2 weeks or so. And if they find anything in your blood that isn't acceptable such as HIV or something similiar, you will be notified of that too. So please set up an account, make an appointment, and start giving blood ASAP.
