This review is for the physical branch ar Kennewick, Wa, not the online services.
After my previous bank. Bank of the West was bought out, I eventually got locked out of my account.
The ONLINE services and phone center has been genuinely abysmal and horrible.
However, Phoenix at the Kenmewick branch has offered stellar service. Despite everything we still couldn't get me logged into my online account, amd i had to cancel my account, but I appreciate everything he did.
Online services get 0 out of 5 stars, Phoenix get 5 out of 5 stars.

Since they merged with BMO bank my experience has been awful. Half the time my online banking doesn't work or my debit card doesn't. Tells me I have insufficient funds and I have to transfer to a different card.

Terrible slow service! Money order took 30 min at drive through. Person in a car behind was probably mad too! Next time, taking cash from business account took 25 min ?. What would they do if there was a line of customers?!

I applied for a RV loan with Good Sam. They use Bank of the West as the lender. It is a nightmare dealing with them. The communication between you and the loan agent is non existent. They told me I needed another piece of information. Only told me of one piece needed instead of all pieces.. I called and left Emails to see if anything else was needed. No response until I found a way to get to a manager. I have been working on getting the paperwork for the title and plates for 5 weeks with no success. If you need to finance something try another lender. Shame on Good Sam for recommending them.

In general I was happy here. Very friendly, not to long of wait times. But I found myself in a small financial situation while I was waiting for my new job to start and over drew my account. They charged me a daily fee for every business day it was overdrawn plus the original overdraft fees. Making it where my paycheck would not be enough to cover the balance and pay my other bills. The account ended up closing and going to collections. I got it paid off rather quickly from there. But it still affect my credit. When I spoke to the bank manager I was told that the fees were standard practice and that they couldn't wave them. At every bank I have backed, I have never heard of this or dealt with it. Sadly, I'll never do business with bank of the west ever again.

I have had Bank of the West for years. They were at one time very good.... I had my first Business Loan from them over 12 years ago, but used them over 20 years. The last 2 years have been TERRIBLE. Customer service is fragmented. Staffing at branches has gone down...
I had to order a replacement debit card 3 month's ago for one of my managers. I had to come in and order it 3 times before it FINALLY showed up!!! Really!?? 3 months for a dang replacement depit card??? It just never came, I would check every 2 weeks, and aways the same confused look on faces, and hmmm.... "let me order it again for you" .... I was also promised calls back ... THEY LITERALLY NEVER happen. Maybe 20% of the time it happens. I am sure it is because the answer will be, "oh gosh... no notes, and they are very stricked about returning those overdraft scam fees, sorry"...
About 2.5 years ago, one of my managers used their petty cash c.c. too much, and it caused some overdrafts... Bank of the west will keep paying the ammount... even little charges like $6.78 for a tool, BUT then they will charge you $35.00 OVERDRAFT fee!!! Soooo... 2 years ago I went rounds about it, and if course nothing wss done, except for the manager to "take care of it" saying that from now on if it happened again, the card would stop, and not go into the "overdraft protection scam... umm... I mean service". So...all is good for 2 years, then it happened again. Manager used petty cash card for a large purchase by mistake causing the card to go over draft. So... you guessed it... overdraft protection scam kicks in happily paying the overdrafts with an extra charge of 35 dollars for each one...by the time they MAIL you a notice, there are 13 other small charges that go through... so... yep, over 500 DOLLARS IN OVERDRAFT FEES!!! I call, and of course blow a gasket, and am told... "oh, let me talk to some "managers", but it is pretty hard to get that reversed, I will call you back lateer today... and IDO NOT SEE ANY NOTES IN THE SYSTEM ABOUT IT HAPPENING 2 YEARS AGO"... That was 2 DAYS AGO!!!! ....This bank is done. I am removing my 4 accounts, and my 100 thousand dollars and going to a bank that appreciates me...…

Like all banks, Bank of the West exploits the poor and struggling through hidden fees and incredibly slow transaction processing. Good luck if you live paycheck to paycheck because you will never truly know how much money is in your account, and even if you put money in right away to save it, you will almost invariably get a $35 fee. The staff is very friendly, but clearly have all had to create a social wall to deal with the fact that the place they work for creates frustration and pain in their customers on a daily basis, but they have dedicated their lives to this shallow and harmful pursuit, and are forced to pin up their smiles and tow the line for their masters, even though they seem to be really good people otherwise— they can just disassociate for the paycheck. One guy, Francisco, gives off the vibe that he is heavily medicating anger problems, and on the 50/50 chance that you have to interact with him, you will enjoy a condescending experience with a near certain torrent of upsell attempts if you try to express any concern about your experience, from which you will be forced to manically backpedal if you ever want out of the conversation. What a nightmare, just keep your cash in your mattress.

We've tried since 2004 to close a line-of-credit account at Bank of the West. It's been zero balance all this time and they ignore our multiple requests to close the account, keep sending us statements, and recently tried to charge us a fee for an account that we keep asking them to close. Incompetent? Dishonest? Take your money and your reputation and run!
