I took our labradoodle to urgent care after discovering this wound on our dogs paw. The vet said he did not know what it was and I should take her to her primary vet. Really? I just paid you several hundred dollars to tell me that. No antibiotics despite the extreme swelling, pain, redness and irritation. I put the photo into ChatGPT and it immediately indicates infection. Tomorrow, we will see our dogs vet and I'm sure there will be a biopsy and antibiotics. What a pathetic organization. Waste of money and time!!!

All vets have issues, but compared to ALL off the vets in Tacoma (I've used at least four), this place is definitely '5 star'. Although I used them for urgent care on a Saturday, they were no more expensive than a 'squeeze in' visit that I had to beg for at Commencement Bay. And they absolutely knew what they were doing, despite having no experience with my dog - their vet was able to analyze and give his decision, whereas Tacoma vets just collected money and acted like they were fresh out of vet school. Uptown outdistanced other vets so much that I would prefer to just take my vets there, as emergencies, than do the almost as costly normal vet visits at other places. This is a sad statement about the current veterinary situation in the Pacific Northwest.

One of our pups had an allergic reaction to new medication prescribed by our regular vet. Uptown Animal Hospital triaged his symptoms and treated him quickly. Staff were very good about communicating with me throughout his visit and made thoughtful recommendations about his care and treatment. Our pup felt better almost immediately after some steroids, antihistamines, and some fluids. So thankful to have a twenty four hour vet hospital nearby!

Dr. Will is the best! Our dog got into a fight with another dog, and her ear was ripped into three places. The receptionist was extremely accommodating and got us in quickly. Dr. Will gave us the option of amputating the ear, which would be quicker, or trying to stitch it back together. He said the ear would be worth saving, and suggested the stitches. Him and his team stayed two hours past closing to save her ear! Dr. Will even followed up via email to see how she was doing. We brought her back several times for check ups and she always received the best level of care. They didn’t even charge me when I brought her back for new bandages. Her ear healed wonderfully! Thanks to Dr. Will our baby still has both or her ears. We will be taking all of our pets here!

Before you take your animal here look at reviews and hit lowest..you will see many, many poor reviews. These people make mistakes,we all do, but we all don't lie about it then refuse service after 1700 payed and job done wrong. My dogs ear should have been demobilized and it wasn't even after I voiced my concerns about it. The girl answering the phone kept my dog hurting for 3 extra days before making an appointments only to have us show up and be denied service. They did surgery and it didn't work so when I brought my dog back they told me they weren't going to do the surgery again and then refused my dog service. It was an all around tearable experience!!!
They can't be trusted. And they will not own there mistakes. I won't deal with dishonesty. I took my dog elswhere and it cost 1100 so 400 cheaper and they wrapped my dogs head ,"up town did not, they put meds in my dogs ear and told me not to do anything to his ear for 5 days or so, up town gave me my dog back and his ear wasn't even covered up and told me to put meds in ear every day and that just made him shake his head and that was what cause the problem to start with. When I called them on the phone to tell them my dogs ear was back to what it was before surgery apparently they didn't like my tone but didn't say so till after 3 days then made a noon appointment on 4 th day so I went just to have them say they were refusing service because of my attitude on Monday the first day I had called. So why the three days and the drive out there when they knew they were going to refuse service? That is the sort of place up town is. Gross me out....
( Well it's been 3 or 4 months and, yet, no post back from them to explained why the 3 days and then a noon appointment before you tell me you aren't going to see my dog again? I see you've answered others. Please do explain why my dog was made to suffer.

Edit: when we followed up with our primary vet, they had no problem expressing her glands while I held her & they even took her blood while I held her….i definitely left uptown thinking the worst and that I would have to put my dog down really soon. Come to find out that’s not true, her heart murmur is not that serious. 300$+ and an extra vet trip for my senior dog who hates going to the vet for them to just worry me to death and not even fully clear out her infected anal gland. I’ll leave the five stars because of the front desk lady but man, I won’t be back to uptown, I’ll just wait for my primary vet to open next time.
My dog had an anal gland abscess that I noticed when I had gotten home from work. I was panicking and I had called around to maybe ten of the local Tacoma vets that were still open…to which none were very helpful, one was even quite rude, all the ERs had long waits. Lastly I called uptown vet and the receptionist was SO NICE and SO helpful and reassuring and knowledgeable. She told me to call
In the morning to get a same day appt. Which I did and I got one in the evening. All of the staff was so kind and the vet really knew what he was talking about and he broke some pretty heartbreaking news to me, gave me some estimates and time to think and he said he knew one estimate was super expensive and told me my primary vet could probably do these cheaper….even after I agreed to it he told me again that my primary can do these xrays and gave me space to change my mind and do the cheaper option to get us to our appt with our primary. Idk other ER places I’ve experienced as soon as you agree to whatever costly estimate they give you, in despair and love for your pets well-being, they take money you don’t really have and move onto the next client. I’m so greatful for the receptionist who took my first call, and all of the staff we met once we were there. Thank you so much.

I don't think they're very caring they are focused on money they rack up the bill very fast and it's extremely expensive actually to get vet care anywhere. I think a lot of venture capitalists have bought up these vet practices and turned them into revenue profit making machines where the care for animals is now more expensive than going into human emergency room. It's ridiculous and I am very upset about it.

This review is specifically related to a particular incident, not speaking on their care as a whole.
Long story short:
*Request your price quotes before they package up the meds. They pushed meds on me without going over them & the price first.
I took my dog to the urgent care, we decided it was time to euthanize her but I wanted to take her home for the night & do it the next day.
I was SHOCKED at the amount of medications they pushed on me, $400 worth of meds when they knew she only had that 1 evening left.
I felt it was extremely insensitive to not go over this before packaging them up. It was super late, I was emotionally traumatized & then I felt completely used after this experience.
I still have the bag of meds unused, who has $400 to waste?

This is a wonderful and caring place to take your fur babies. This was my first time here and I am so impressed with the care and communication that the staff took to take care of my dog. Highly recommend. We will be back!

Update to review: To be clear the cost of Vet care is NOT a burden and I provide for both my fur babies quite well and always have. They are both rescues who lead a very charmed life as they should. They want or need for absolutely nothing. They have never been denied any service they need. However, I find that adding a Vet Tech fee on top of a Nail Trim excessive. They get groomed every 6 weeks and have their nails trimmed every 3 weeks as they have since I was fortunate enough to adopt my girls. I called around locally and not one Vet I called adds an additional Vet tech fee to administer shots or trim nails.
Original Review: I moved to GH in January 2023 and needed to schedule an annual for one of my dogs in early March and decided to have a checkup for my other dog at same time. I found the staff from receptionist to vet techs to vets all pleasant and very professional. I had to bring one dog in for urgent care which was also very positive experience. Was doing nail trims too until they started charging a tech visit on top of nail trim. . Dr Dewitt and Dr Ballou were fantastic as are the technicians I had interactions

Went in today to establish care with Dr. Beth Dunfield after moving to Washington state from Texas. First of all, this office is beautiful. Although that’s to be expected as Gig Harbor is a higher SES area. The reception staff are incredibly friendly and personable. I will say that the prices were a bit of a sticker shock BUT the quality of care was exceptional. They blocked off two hours for both of my kitties and spent EVERY minute with them, that’s more time than humans get with a doctor so I felt it was well worth the price. I did not feel rushed whatsoever, all my questions were answered, and the doc and vet techs collaborated beautifully to come up with a treatment plan for both of my cats. I literally have zero complaints. I am so glad I decided to establish care here because wait times are no joke! If you’re looking to get your money’s worth and can afford this place I highly, highly recommend it! I feel as if I can trust them to take care of two of the most important things in my life and that’s priceless. Thanks Diane for referring me!

we have been bringing our dog here for about 2 years now and have had great experiences. recently, I called asking about shots and the person who answered the phone was SO knowledgeable and friendly. I didn't write her name down but wanted to thank her again for being honest and not trying to talk us into expensive treatments that are unnecessary. This is a vet that cares, they've proven it to us over and over again.

When our dog showed intestinal distress, we called Uptown Animal Hospital prepared to bring in a stool sample. A short discussion with Marla answered all of our questions and she even suggested we postpone running a stool sample, since it wasn't really necessary, saving us the expense. She recommended a bland diet and gave us a course of action to follow with her diet.
We are so grateful for her time and expertise.
Thank you Uptown Animal Hospital and Marla for such great service!!

Dr Cooper and Dr Ballou are the BEST vets I have ever worked with and I have had pets for 20+years. Megan the vet tech is also amazing!
The attention to detail and care shown to my pets is why I will keep going back.
Great clinic!
