Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad Mechanical Shop is a heritage railroad offering visitors a 2-hour steam-powered railroad adventure through the forest and foothills south of Mount Rainier National Park. The train ride is great for families, with the ability to move from car to car while the train is traveling, and the customer service is exceptional. The views along the way are amazing, with sightings of elk and scenic river views. However, some areas may have trashy backyards, but the overall Americana experience is still enjoyable. The business also offers a Christmas with the Clauses event, which has received mixed reviews. While the actors try their best to make it entertaining, the event is described as an "improv carnival show" with some issues, such as lukewarm and oddly tasting hot cocoa and fogged-up windows. Nonetheless, visitors can take home a nice mug and a small ornament. The mechanical shop itself is praised for its great staff and impressive craftsmanship in maintaining the locomotives, including the machining of parts and the work on the huge drive components. Overall, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad Mechanical Shop provides a memorable experience for visitors, with a focus on both the train ride and the behind-the-scenes mechanical work.
