Definitely the best place to buy houseplants for less than most other nurseries, The staff are super friendly too!

I will say the variety of plants are nice. The young girls at the register were friendly. The manager, said she was the daughter of the VanWingerden’s, hmmm, has lack of customer service and was very rude with an attitude. I have been a customer for years and will not buy anymore because of how I was treated. Very argumentative and defensive was this so called manager.I will be telling my family, friends and neighbors about the un-called for experience I had with your manager.

I called around with heirloom seeds in my hand trying to pay someone to start my seeds for me because my greenhouse had blown over. Tom, at Vanwingerden, agreed to take my seeds and germinate them. He sent me pictures of the plants germinated in April and told me I could pick them up in "a month or so". Some didn't come up and I told him not to worry about those ones. The deal was I would buy the starts back. I called before mother's day to pick up the starts with no response. I called after mother's day only to discover Tom gave away ALL the plants to one of his employees. Not only did he give this employee the plants, he gave her ALL my seeds as well and then tells me he doesn't want to bug her to ask for anything back because of a loss in her family. Why would I bring seeds in and give them to their office if I didn't want the plants? Why would he get my hopes up by sending me a picture of the plants? What would ever make him think it was ok to give away my heirloom seeds? I blindly trusted and shouldn't have. The whole thing makes no sense at all and I feel totally robbed.

Best place to buy plants. Their retail area is perfect to buy gifts for someone special...or yourself. Staff and super helpful and friendly. Need to stop spending so much money here. It’s so bad for my bank account.

Store front was nice but unfortunately 1 year into a pandemic and they are not enforcing mask mandates. Three customers in store were not wearing masks. I told the employee Jen and she said she is not the government and not comfortable saying anything or enforcing anything. As a pregnant person shopping and feeling safe is extremely important to me and this business is unwilling to follow the law and protect their customers to ensure a safe shopping experience.

The houseplant section at the nursery is gorgeous. They definitely have the best selection of interesting indoor plants for the best prices in the area. They also supply to the Bellingham co ops and Trader Joe's and probably other places. However, they have a serious pest problem. Almost every plant I've bought there or at TJs has pests! They were very kind and let me switch out a few when I brought them back the next day, but I was stuck buying specimens that weren't my first choice because all the others had noticeable pests. They're really sweet and I LOVED my shopping experience but I can't trust their product. I don't think they're an organic nursery so why aren't they controlling the bugs?

As usual an enjoyable experience to plant shop in this vast nursery. Great selection of annuals, perennials and awesome hanging baskets. However I was very disappointed to see most staff were not wearing face masks during this pandemic crisis. They did not even seem particularly mindful of the 6' social distancing. Most customers were mindful and wearing masks. I hope they revisit this because 'otherwise' it is a fabulous resource for gardeners.

Primarily a wholesale business with limited retail offerings. No organically grown plants that we could find. Prices are standard for a private nursery.

Heading into Birch Bay, one of my favorite stops is Vanwingerden's greenhouses. Driving into the lot, they boast the biggest hanging baskets framing the gate I have ever seen. Absolutely gorgeous. The store has a huge selection of garden items and plants and their sales and promotions change regularly. Their plants are healthy and very competitive or lower in price than Bellingham nurseries and I always seem to find the cutest sculptures and decor things there for my home. This summer, I found all my vegetable starts there, and last week, a stunning Japanese Lantern flower that I haven't seen anywhere else. Customer service is very good, and it's definitely worth a visit!

I've had bad service here more often than not. On a slow day it's common to have to interrupt the cashier's private conversation to check out.
