My first visit was not great my children and I went in looking for a pet and came across this cat a bengal I think after letting the children engage with the cat and all seemed well as I went to the desk to fill out the paperwork. As I waited I decided to go and see my children’s progress with said Cat . I was told the cat just came in 2 days ago and needed to be actively played with for at least a hour a day . No problem . So once we made the decision I was approached by a woman who said I don’t think this is the cat for you this cat is a lot and we want to make sure it goes to a home that can handle THIS cat it’s a special cat and I don’t think it’s a good fit for you . Then I get another woman that tells me yes this cat was just brought back and was peeing all over the furniture and I think the cat would be better with a older couple the same cat that I was told needs to be played with for at least a hour a day and would be great with kids now pees on everything and would benefit from a quiet home with the elderly. So after that I just left my daughters were so upset and kept saying it’s like they didn’t want to let us have the cat . But while we were there 2 cats had been a adopted and 1 was waiting to be picked up . This is not a good way to handle business especially one that relies on adoption. I told my children everything happens for a reason it just was not our time . First impression I will not be going back.

we adopted a kitten on 11/4, and it was an easy adoption experience. i am giving 2 stars because we were not notified that this kitten has a flea/tick infestation, and they did not retest him/disclose that he was positive roundworms and coccidia, which he still has. we have since brought him home and he has been around our other pets and our baby. we watched them give the dewormer, but did not see if he was actually given flea and tick medicine and there was no sign of it on his fur (it was signed off on, but we shouldn’t be finding live fleas). we have since spent hundreds of dollars at the vet trying to get this all resolved. what should be his time to spend getting comfortable with everyone, we now are trying to get it under control while also keeping him away from our other pets to avoid it spreading. /:

Very nice and clean shelter, had an awesome experience there a couple of months ago when I adopted my beagle. The staff was so nice, knowledgeable, and professional. I am forever grateful that I came here and got the dog that I adore. I am thinking of donating to them, because I feel like thank you is simply not enough to express how grateful and thankful I am to this shelter that connected me with the beagle I love. Thanks so much Heritage Humane.

These folks were amazing. I had to find a place for my brother's dog after he entered a nursing home. They were so gentle, patient and kind even though they really didn't have space to take "little biddy". Excellent staff and facilities. I couldn't recommend them any higher. Great place.

We’ve been rescuing dogs from here for over fifteen years. The staff has always been excellent. Our doggies have been excellent too! I’m sure we’ll do it again at some point.

I recently adopted a dog from the Heritage Humane Society named "Ruger."I was told on multiple occasions that he was ten months old (as was listed on the website), which would be great for me as I work fulltime but can also occasionally work from home.Ten months seemed like an age that I could handle and having relatively recently raised my other dog from two months to now two years, I had an approximate understanding of what his disposition may be. I was also informed that he was partially housetrained and had some problems from time to time in the mornings. Not a problem! I was prepared for a few mistakes, as anyone who adopts at any age should be. When he came home, however, I immediately began to question the information I was given. He was clearly not housetrained at all and didn't recognizethe difference between inside, where you don't go to the bathroom, and outside, where you do. He had other behaviors that made me question his age, including poor social skillsand coordination. Poor little (big) guy didn't know where his own feet were! Finally, he still had his puppy teeth, which usually fall out at around six months in most dogs. All of these factors together resulted in a dog who certainly wasn't ten months old, and unfortunately in a dog that, given my occupational status and the fact I didn't have another family member around to help raise this obvious puppy, I could not care for appropriately. After five days, I made the decision that I should return him, in both of our best interests. This was quite sad and difficult to do, I just knew he needed a bigger family, more attention, and I didn't want us to become any more bonded than we already were.Immediately before bringing him back, I found a veterinary report from 10/1 stating he was five months old! That explains it! Feeling more justified but no better about the decision, we went on our way. When I arrived to surrender him I was asked what the issue was. "He's five months old."The staff member looked at me, looked at the pup's vet report, and said yes of course he's five months old, it says so right here. "Everyone here told me on multiple occasions that he was ten months old. Unfortunately I'm not able to care for a five month old dog." When it came to signing the release, my confusion only grew. The release said he was ten months old!I was informed that, according to their system, he was ten months old and it couldn't be changed without a veterinary contradiction on his actual age. This was, as I said above, something they certainly did have and even acknowledged when I came back in! Dumbfounded, I signed away.Cherry on this quite sad cake: when leaving, I cheerily informed them that I'd be back, as I still wanted a companion for me and my other dog."Not any time soon I hope! Take the time to learn what you can handle" or something to that effect was the response, a demeaning and degrading statement following what was already a difficult and quite sad process.Fine, I won't come back any time soon.I imagine he's now or soon to be in the system as ten months old again. Future adoptees: congratulations on making the wonderful decision of helping an animal in need but be sure to read all of the documentation clearly before adopting, and don't be too quick to take staff members' word on matters of training, disposition, and yes even the age of your new companion.Roger (I changed his name slightly when he lived with me), if you ever learn to read, I'm so sorry buddy but I know you'll find your family soon!
