New to the area, so we checked out the visitor center. Pat, the tourism director made the experience wonderful! She made us feel like she had known us for years. The information we received and the displays we saw about this county, were incredible!

No one trumpets Surry as well as Pat. She loves this place and works harder than anyone to keep hundreds of years worth of memories alive. Though the Center is small, it quietly shows the points of interest available to a visitor, from historical sites, to pick your own farms, to a winery with the World's Tallest Goat Tower.

Surry County began as part of Jamestown in 1607 ("the Plantations across the River") and was established as a county separate from James City County only in 1652. The long trail of her deep roots in history may profitably be begun in a visit to the exhibitions at the Surry County Visitor Center, which is newly opened in the newly renovated Old Clerk of Court's Office, itself a solid survivor from pre-Civil War days. The English history begins even earlier than a "New Fort" begun by Captain John Smith in 1608 . . . and it never ends!
Of course The Visitor Center can provide every visitor with all the latest available information on the many historic attractions of Surry County, and as it is conveniently located right in front of the Surry Court House, it is readily accessible from any direction--for example, it is a direct 4 1/2-mile route straight from the Jamestown-Scotland Free Ferry Dock along the John Rolfe Highway (S.R. 31) to the Courthouse Intersection. As it is now open seven days a week (note the hours--they are closed for lunch from noon to 1:00 P.M. Monday through Saturday), it is a wonderful resource!
