I had a transmission line leak in my Sprinter campervan that left me stranded 10 miles away from Stone Auto Repair in Salem, VA and 225 miles away from home. I called the shop and spoke with the owner, Jimmy Stone, who said he could look at my van in the morning. So I got myself towed to his shop. He understood I was passing through and got me back on the road within 24 hours. He even allowed me to run an extension cord so I could stay in my campervan and run my A/C during the high heat of the night. I was left very impressed with the kindness, competence, and professionalism that I experienced.

To start he had my vehicle for a transmission job and as soon as I got it back it started having engine issues, which it never had had before the engine is almost new about 50,000 miles. I sent my vehicle back to them on December 29th, 2023 they have had it for over a month(February 3rd, 2024)and never called me but one time to tell me to come get it and it was ready. After arriving at the shop the what I assumed to be a fixed vehicle after a month I am then told to “get it off my damn lot, and a word of advice don’t leave shitty reviews on a mechanic before you get your vehicle back”. Basically the mechanic that owns the shop was constantly pushing quick brake jobs and alignments in front of mine to make quicker money(I guess whatever was wrong with mine wasn’t gonna make him a lot), so I think he got mad that I posted a review about him taking to long and decided to tell me to just get it back. Very rude, very unprofessional, never returned a call other than to tell me to get it back, if you’re gonna get a repair in Salem area don’t go here. Needless to say he did not solve my problem and I will be making sure everything is fine by taking to another mechanic soon and will update if everything is okay or not.
Edit: Ever since I got my jeep back from this mechanic and he cussed me out, my brake lines were full of junk and blew out. My engine had trash and gunk in it and started tapping within 1000 miles of me leaving his shop, the engine only has 80k and I don’t drive hard. I’m not saying for certain this mechanic messed up my ride, but all my issues started after he touched my vehicle.
This part is for the owner, apologize to customers and explain the issues instead of ignoring them and finally calling when they leave a bad review. My review could have easily been redacted, learn and be a better, more honest, and open person not rude and cussing out customers because you are mad about a 100% honest review.

Stone Auto is an absolute awesome car shop!! My husband and I recently had our transmission completely go out in our car. Not only did Jimmy restore our car back to optimal running condition, he also allowed us to make payments at our own pace! Jimmy is awesome and Kendra’s customer service is A+! We highly recommended their service!!!

My sister went here to get her headlight replaced by this “mechanic”, we ordered the wrong part. so we had to get him to re-install the shattered but still working headlight. it didn’t work after he re-installed it, so we called and he claimed a 250 dollar piece went missing that was causing the light not to work. he stated that “somebody must have unbolted it”…”it was still attached to the light the first time and then was not there when we dropped it off the second time”. and when my mom showed up insisting that we did not touch the light between visits, he was very quickly able to find the expensive part he “left bolted onto the headlight” in his shop. He also did not issue a refund, justifying this with his offer to put the part back on my car. But we will never let this man touch any of our cars again.

Do not take your vehicle here for any kind of diagnostic work. When I bought my Miata 2 years ago I took it here for a gas tank replacement. The car ran for about 6 months before the fuel pump went out again. I took it back to Jimmy's and it took him about a month to get the car back to me. After that another 6 months went by and again the car stopped running. For the 3rd time I took my car back to stone auto repair and it took a month an a half to get the car back to me this time. It ran for just 1 day before the car stopped running.
Do yourself a favor and go to a good mechanic the first time. Lesson learned.
Jimmy has multiple occasions called me and told me that the car was ready to go and minutes later or a few days later the car has died on me. Jimmy could be a reliable mechanic if you only need brakes or oil changes but beyond that I would never take my car here.

ABSOLUTELY 5 STARS!! Long story short, my husband and I were driving from NH to NC and our car broke down. We made it to a truck stop and spent the night in the car. The next day…Stone Auto helped us with everything. The car was towed to them. My son picked us up from NC and went about our vacation. The mechanic called us and said the car was alset. We thought we would be leaving the Cadillac in VA and looking for a new car. He kept our car safe and sound and we picked it up on the way back through. These guys are the BEST!! Cannot thank you enough!!

Came highly recommended by a neighbor, took my 2007 ford sport trac in for a noise in the front end. They quickly and professionally diagnosed the issue and worked me in the following Monday. They even found an issue with the exhaust and fixed that. Everything was completed by 1pm on the day promised and for the “great” price they quoted me. Can’t say enough good things about Stone Automotive in salem va!! You guy’s now have a new customer for life!! Highly recommend them for your automotive repair needs. Stone Auto Repair agreed to check out the sunroof on my Mitsubishi Endeavor when nobody else would. Jimmy was amazing and fixed the sunroof in less than an hour. Jimmy and Kindra were so friendly. They have a new customer. Just fantastic.
