My first time coming to see the Roanoke Star was in the mid 60's. I was a young preteen and was a resident of the VA Baptist Children's Home in Salem, VA. The supporting structure was made of wood and besides us kids at the Baptist Children's Home scratching our name in the wood other people from all over the world who visited would do the same thing. That was a part of history that people who visit the site now don't know about because of the wood structure being replaced with steel. It's a little disappointing to go with other people and telling them this story that happened a little over 50 years ago and not being able to show them. It's like a little piece of people's history being destroyed.
