You know it's bad when I am writing a review while I am still at the hospital. I am currently in the emergency room helping my uncle. They have taken the x-ray and told us the results (in this case nothing major was wrong). The nurse then said she'll get the discharge paper for us. It's been almost two hours and I haven't heard anything from anyone. The staff was friendly, but it really should not take this long to get discharge papers. Extremely disappointed. I should also note that it does not seem super busy either. I've seen other nurses going in and out of the other patients' rooms in a timely manner, so I really do not understand what's going on.

PLEASE NOTE, I am reviewing this hospital based on my birthing experience. My baby was sent to JW's NICU after I delivered my baby at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center (SRMC) DO NOT let this hospital turn something that is supposed to be the best experience of your life into the absolute WORST! I went into labor and arrived at the hospital with my doula. While they were registering me, I made the mistake of saying that I had reached my deductible (it was last October and I had more than met it) and there was a comment that there was meconium in my water...my baby pooped first which is common but typically calls for the baby to go to the NICU for the night to be checked out rather than sleeping next to the mom. Well GUESS WHAT- SRMC had no level 3 NICU needed to assess the baby. So the "pediatrician" on call explained that the baby would have to be transported. Despite our wishes to send her to Mary Washington and our pleading with him, he ordered her to be sent 70 miles away to an "in network" hospital in Bon Air, VA. It's in the HCA hospital network and they didn't want to lose an opportunity to make a ton of money, my insurance would have covered Mary Washington! I ended up losing a bit of blood and needed to stay back and get a blood transfusion the next day. After I was discharged, I went to my baby (we missed the golden hour, first nursing, daddy skin to skin, everything). Once I caught up to her at JW, I learned that before I was there, they dosed her with fentanyl because she was "too feisty" then they gave her phenobarbital because she shook a little (all babies do, they've been cooped up and need to find their limits), they scanned her brain with 2 EEGs, a sonogram, (then eventually a a MRI). Day after day they would tell me that 1. I couldn't nurse because I would not have enough milk from my lost blood (my guess is they have a chart and need to put on it how many ml the baby got which they can't do when a mom nurses) and 2. She could go home if she did x then when she did it they made another goal for her to reach and another (it started with eat, breathe, and maintain a healthy respiration rate- she did that in a day of us getting there yet they still held her hostage for 8 total days!). I was on the phone regularly with my pediatrician's - who I didn't know was a NICU pediatrician at the hospital that SRMC refused to send her - and the office could not make any sense of any of it. My husband had eventually had ENOUGH and demanded they transport my baby to the other hospital this would have been paid for by us because our insurance wouldn't cover 2 transports (we didn't know but an unnecessary $4,000 out of pocket would have given us grounds pursue further but since our insurance paid, no go) so all of a sudden they wanted to do one more brain scan before transporting her. In this last brain scan, the MRI, they diagnosed my daughter with a critical blood clot that in her brain that - if untreated- "could paralyze her, giver her a stroke, leave her brain dead, or even kill her" so they forced my husband and I to put her on Lovenox (blood thinner shots) to dissolve this "clot" and she would be fine in 3-6 months of 2 injections per day! At that point, before we could go, we needed to do blood draws on her to make sure the Lovenox levels were right in her blood (it's a dangerous drug and they don't typically prescribe it to infants so too much would kill her and too little would not affect this made up clot). That would have been one thing, except they got one draw then didn't get enough for the labs to be done and they needed her to stay 12 more hours every time they messed up for the follow up draws (3 times they messed up)! Eventually my husband pitched a fit and said they were not touching her again and if they cared about our child, they would transport her NOW. They finally released her to us with the agreement that I woul

Though I 'felt' attended to at this visit and thank those who were attentive, I received an incorrect diagnosis and after care which left me with nearly 3 months of distress and PTSD. Richmond healthcare is woefully inadequate. I am now going out-of-state for healthcare. Update September 2019. Memorial Sloan Kettering solved the problem. Do not hesitate to find their financial resources help if you simply cannot afford to visit a good hospital. We are now considering leaving the area due to very sad healthcare. Most folks do not even realize how bad it is. I now have PTSD thanks to this experience at JW. I suspect they are turning everyone who enters their doors into revenue.

Emergency department is terrible! I saw them call a person back and 10 minutes later they came back out and started calling his name again! The lady that was with him says, he's already back there! This happened twice in 30 minutes. We were told no one is allowed to go back with the person seeking treatment. Beware never leave a love one alone at JOHNSON WILLIS EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT! Also, patient privacy is very questionable, they discussed people's personal information right in front of strangers ! Sub standard care! After I witnessed a day at JW ER I instructed my family, if I need emergency department PLEASE DON'T send me here! They have several signs saying no camera or video allowed! I know why, they don't want any evidence! Seriously , you may be better off going to one of the doctor in a box places!

We had a baby here and it was a good experience except for the lactation consultant. We wanted to breast and bottle feed because that is what we did for our other child and it worked out. She was relentless with her "evidence" of how we should only breast feed. She talked us into it. The day we were supposed to be discharged the pediatrician saw us and told us that our baby had lost too much weight and recommended that we supplement the feedings with formula. I was furious as that was what we tried to do. I explained this to him and he told me that he had the same problem when he had a baby. The part that makes me mad is that when we told the nurses that we wanted to use both the bottle and breast milk they would not give us the formula without the consult with the lactation lady who talked us out of it. For us it was a lesson learned that some of these people can only see one way. Other than that everyone was great and very caring.

Went to JW for a concussion that Swift Creek sent me to for a concussion. I had past out in kitchen cuz of smoke from the oven. I was given xrays and Ct scan and then taken to JW for a neuro exam that wDr. J. Kim Harris refused to give me and instead he bullied me about my real medical history. Dr. Irons was the Hospialist that didn't know anything about my level one brain injury or seizures kidney troubles that make my blood pressure go sky high. By law hospital are suppose to continue daily meds like blood pressure, seizure meds and nerve pain meds but I wasn't given anything. They did stick a needle in my ever night to prevent blood clots but they refused to give me any of my daily meds needed to keep me stable. I have a seizure on the Neuro floor and they have me hand cuffed, shackled and chained cuz I am having trouble with my brain? This is abuse and Debra Bray and Greg Lowe did their best to cover this up. They took me to John Randoff where finally got the Neuro exam which was abnormal and my brain isn't help? They haul me off like some crazed animal instead of a women who was to have spinal cord surgery at eh same hospital and recovery was suppose to take place on the same floor that I was almost killed on because I was told another fall could kill me and I have 2 sheriff deputies slamming me to the floor where I am suppose to have spinal cord surgery and the sheriff slammed his knee in my back 2" away from where 2 cysts were growing and they let this happen? I have pictures and records that back all of this up. This is abuse of the worse kind and they even got rid of all my up coming surgery that was to take place jut a month later. They got rid of all info to protect them and not a patient that seeks help. This is abuse of the worse kind and doctors Irons and Harris bullied a brain injured patients that he and Dr. Mathe' have made sure I am not seen or heard cuz they abused me over and over again.

I was brought in to the ER at Johnston-Willis Hospital by helicopter on the afternoon of April 3, 2018. I had symptoms of a TIA or a stroke. All of the staff I met treated me wonderfully. Nurses, doctors, the ladies who brought my meals, the person who mopped the floor all treated me with great kindness, respect and professionalism. Staff was very patient and meticulous in explaining what was happening and I am very grateful for their presence and actions. Richard L. Cottingham Hampton, VA

So an update. I have paid off more than 1/3 of my bill i now only owe roughly 250 from 1100. So thank you jw thank you sooooo much for sending me to a DEBT collector. Yes for 250. After 900 has been paid. Yes i wrote. to headqurters in nashville to no avail. I wish you were just as concerned when I was in your. Emergency room to give a correct diagnosis. R u really so concerned i wont pay you what i owe you. A measley 250. Thats ok i contacted Lee S Hostetler. Mgr risk mgt. much earlier to see if they would take my acct to 0 this was when i owed 800. I know im very naieve. But you just HOPE that when a corp is in the wrong they own up to it. Not JW. Our culture is filled with more greed than ever before. And i just wish Lee Hosteler would have had the decency to call instead of sending a letter. So get better training for your staff, clean up your CT room.. some sticky substance all over, pick up empty syringes in your waiting room oh and to the ladies in billing. Maybe its more important to take care of your patient first than to be CHASING a relative down so you can get your deductible. See, it really is all about THE MONEY. Stay away from Johnston Willis.
