Room was spacious and clean. I loved everything about our room. It was quiet and valet was a plus. Everybody was nice and courteous during check in and check out .

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Commonwealth and I cant recommend it enough. The staff was welcoming and attentive. The room not only was spotless but was incredibly spacious. The hotel's location is perfect close to restaurants, landmarks, which made exploring the city so easy. A special shoutout to Javon, who went above and beyond to ensure I had a wonderful stay.

Our room was HUGE! Good views of the area, parking is valet only but $33 well worth it and they will let you come and go without paying extra. Extremely clean, great service!

Our stay in this hotel was phenomenal. Beautiful hotel, extremely well maintained, excellent and cheerful service, enormous rooms, excellent location. They really went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. I was very impressed and look forward to returning.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Commonwealth! Our stay began with a warm and helpful welcome from Juan at the front desk. He checked us in quickly and helped us coordinate with the valet. Aside from the room being spacious, clean, and the bed quite comfortable, the hotel was so full of interesting history and homage to local artists. Summer was our lovely server for breakfast at the hotel restaurant where we enjoyed one of the best biscuits we’ve ever eaten and an overall delicious breakfast. The whole staff was genuine and delightful and we look forward to visiting Richmond again and enjoying another stay at The Commonwealth.

Lovely room. We will stay again. I’d be happier if the price included parking.

The service is subpar. Restaurant has very limited hours and actually closes earlier than published. Hotel is completely out of bottled water and many menu items. Restaurant drinks and food are less than average. Staff is simply “there”, not much help and certainly not going out of their way to find solutions to problems.

This hotel is mediocre at best.
To start...the place is feels like it's been in the same condition since 2001. Nothing has been updated.
There is water damage in the bathroom.
The ice machine is broken.
There is only 1 washer and 1 dryer.
Only 20 channels on the TV and you can't even cast from your devices.
All those plugs on the desk but not a single C plug.
There's nothing vintage about this 'lax way of "remodel" or whatever they want to say .... It's like they tried to clean tarnish with Ajax soap.
I am highly disappointed.... I spent $200 on the same quality that I could find at the $80 a night Country Inn.
The "artwork" that is advertised must be referring to the old ass windows and chandeliers in the lobby.
The valets were awesome, but the Frodo triplets that work the desk need to take a few customer service classes.
My opinion.... Just go to the Westin.
Rooms: Meh
Food and drinks: Nothing is free

I read reviews before coming and I tend to focus on the negative ones. I did not experience any of the issues other reviewers had posted. The view was amazing, the service and location were ideal, and the room was extremely clean and comfortable. I had zero noise issues, no animal sounds or even foot traffic on my floor whatsoever.
The hotel smelled completely normal and no older building smells. Yes the elevator is small- but not crazy small in the way I had taken some of the previous reviews.
There is a great walking park across the street- so perfect if you have a dog. And was peaceful and made the view more appealing.
When we needed a razor the front desk was able to accommodate. My only recommendation for the hotel itself is having pads or tampons too, in case guests forget an essential (just for context the 7-11 within walking distance was out and the nearest Walgreens was closed, so it was a bit of a test to find feminine products near by when we had forgotten them- which is not on the hotel but just a suggestion for the guest services)
We had a full fridge/freezer/microwave and made our own frozen breakfast. They have plates, cups, silverware and paper towels. The bathroom was very nice and everything updated.
The charm of the renovated historical building is not a “cookie cutter” style hotel. If you want a modern mix of historical and still feel you’re in a five star experience, I highly recommend this hotel.
Rooms: Clean, quiet, comfortable.
Safety: Lobby locks at 11pm and is fully monitored. Never felt unsafe and the location felt very safe.
Walkability: City streets- local 7-11, park across the street and steps from the capitol.
Noteworthy details: Historical charm. 50 yards to the right you can tour the capital for free.

Rooms were fantastic. Fluffy (4) pillows and comfortable bed.
I ate breakfast , the biscuits and gravy was really good and went back for dinner and chicken wings had great flavor.
And the valet, was great. I would Stay here again. And dog friendly, that was a plus and the park right outside the hotel. And if you need to go to federal court or anything federal, it's right next door.
Oh and the elevator can only fit 3 to 4 people.
Rooms: And the living room was separate from the bedroom

While we live in VA, We were in town for a convention. This lovely hotel fit the need for our family of 4.
Gorgeous boutique style hotel. Incredibly comfortable beds and wonderfully accommodating staff.
Would definitely recommend for a short stay or a longer vacation!
Rooms: Gorgeous, quiet, and incredibly spacious rooms. Fully equipped with a fridge, sink, and microwave in a kitchenette style layout.
The room had a separate sitting area with a door separating the bedroom from the main living area.
A full pull out couch, slept two children comfortably!
Walkability: Many local attractions very close

I am typing this Sunday morning before we have even checked out.
First impressions when arriving to the hotel everything was fine. The receptionist Juan and valet parking gentlemen were very kind. We arrived Friday night around 8pm. We checked in and head upstairs to our room. When we used the room key it did not work. This was frustrating being that we had all of our luggage with us and was instructed by valet to leave our car upfront get settled and we could come back down to go park our car. We go back downstairs and get our key re activated and head back up. Also, the elevator only fits three adults MAX, VERY very small elevators. We had to head back out so we dropped everything and ended up coming back after 11pm. When we turned
our tv on there isn’t Netflix, Hulu, Disney plus or YouTube, NOTHING. Just basic cable!! If you are someone that likes to watch streaming services bring your iPad or laptop. Saturday comes and we are out pretty much all day and get back around 5pm. We get back to our room and our key is NOT working AGAIN. So we go back down stairs to get it reactivated. ( I was going to get ice for our room and there was hair in the ice bucket: photo below). We had dinner plans at 7pm so we start to get ready. (I will say I should have done deep researching about the pet policy.) As we are getting ready there was a dog a few doors down barking NON stop from the time we left around 6:40pm Saturday night until sunday morning 11am. ( I just checked the site about pets and it’s stated only the 2nd & 3rd floor is pet friendly) we were put on the 3rd floor and we CLEARLY had no pet with us. It is very weird to me we were put on the 3rd floor and we had no pet with us. If you need somewhere to crash with plenty of room and super cheap stay here. However, I am never coming back to this hotel! Also, the housekeeping women were AMAZING as well!!
And the key stopped working AGAIN when my boyfriend came back upstairs to get me so we could check out… smh and it was not even 12pm yet!!
Here are photos of the room:
Rooms: Rooms need to be cleaned throughly and touched up A LOT

We stayed at the Commonwealth last week for a wedding. I would particularly like to note and thank Juan at the front desk who went above and beyond to make our stay lovely and the best it could be! The hotel is lucky to have such a professional and great employee who truly cares about the guests and their experience. Thank you Juan!!!!

This historic hotel is a real gem. I had a suite on the 11th floor. It was a very large two room suite tastefully decorated. The bed was amazing. Super comfortable quilted mattress , soft sheets, and pillow both soft and firm. The location is next to the capital and walkable to bars and restaurants. I will stay again. It sure beats cookie cutter chain hotels. Well done Comminwealth!
