I answered an ad on Indeed for Tax Agent, that turned out to be an offer for tax classes. I turned it down but the owner Cora, was insistent that I was a great fit, so much so that I didn't pay for the course. The course was supposed to be over before tax season. We were to get our authorization to be Tax Agents through her. That never happened. Excuse on top of excuses it quickly became clear, something was not legitimate about this. We missed the beginning of tax season, then when we started filing taxes they were rejected. Rejected because according to the IRS she hadn't been approved to process the forms.
Her solution to this was we'd file through a third party, which she claimed was Liberty Tax. Here's where it got interesting. We were told she had clients from previous years, we saw no clients. She failed to advertise, scrambled to do networking with local businesses and brought in her family members as clients.
The ship was sinking fast. I'd dedicated so much time and energy that I tried to hang in there.
It all ended when she hired me, under the table of course, to assist her. That's when the internet got turned off, for non-payment. She couldn't afford supplies. She asked people to assist her for free because of financial troubles. She didn't pay me because she claims I didn't do anything. Another excuse because she couldn't afford to pay anyone. No clients except the ones that were her family or ones we found.
Then she advises us that she gets a cut of every client we process. Not explained ever before.
When I left I went to Liberty Tax and spoke to the owner. She had never heard of Tax Troop or Cora. She explained she was only affiliated with one other tax group. It's one thing to be deceitful but it's another level when you bring in a reputable company to give you merit.
It's a sad day when you can drag people that are in need of a job in to financial distress, with false promises. There was a mother with a newborn baby that paid for this course who relied on this promise to care for her child. No refund because the grace period had passed. Not that she could afford to anyway.
The clients suffered worst when their tax returns were rejected because she wasn't authorized to process them.
