Update: I went back and tried this place again and I had the pleasure of having Emily do my service and it was much better experience. She took her time and made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire service. I will definitely be returning when it’s time for a fill.I went to this shop on Saturday after I had a massage across the street. The atmosphere of the shop was wonderful but the experience was horrible. I went in for a fill and to have my length cut down. The tech ended up taking off my nails with a cuticle cutter very painfully and butchered my real nails. She then went to use the drill and cut my finger. Then close to the end of the visit she cut herself and never put a bandage on and finished me up. It was pretty unsanitary. When I went to check out I was still charged full price of $85 for the service after cutting me. My nails came out cute in the end but it was a pretty traumatic experience.

Ive been going to a different nail salon in the area for years but have started to leave unhappy each time so I decided to come here after driving by one day. I was not disappointed! I had Ellie and she was amazing. I told her I was getting a new set for engagement photos and she made sure they were perfect. She is very friendly and very good at what she does - she took her time and made sure I liked them and they look amazing! Definitely found my new place to go to. Thanks Ellie!

Nice place , staff were friendly great location for treating yourself and then walking across the street to grab a bite to eat or grocery shop. I recommend you make a reservation online (especially on the weekends).

UPDATE: I will not be going back unless it’s with a BOOKED appt with Ellie. Terrible experience today. Called ahead then was told to come right away so I could be seen - went then waited 35 mins while watching 3 people who came in AFTER me, be sat and serviced first. Ended up just leaving. Disappointing because I tip really well every time and am a returning client. Did not feel valued as a customer at ALL.This is my new favorite and only salon. I will never NOT be going to Ellie for my nails. She’s so good and consultative. She listens and advises while being sure to stop to make sure you like everything as she goes. Also had idea this was Tina’s shop. She’s also a known superstar in RVA. 10/10

It was my first time going to SugarCoat, but it was such a great experience!I came in with damaged nails and raggedy cuticles. I was worried how my short nails would look since I had tips on before. Tina did such an amazing job! She took her time and was gentle, but thorough and actually soaked off the old dip power instead of just tearing them off.110% satisfied. I will definitely be going back to SugarCoat Nail Lounge!

I will say they are friendly and welcoming. I would say when trying out salons , you have to find your nail tech and stick with them. The first vist was perfect. My partner and I recieved pedicures. The second visit not so much. The tech was polite and professional. I however am not in love with my results. The more I love at my nails I notice little errors /imperfections. Inspite of me being satisfied with the outcome of my pedicure. Some of my toenails were cut extremely short. Down to the skin. Now my manicure, the gel polish is is a bit lumpy from the tech applying globs of polish them curing. You can feel the inconsistencies when rubbing the nail. You can see air bubbles in the white of my French manicure. Some of the gel has already started to chip at the tip of my nail(5days later). I had already asked for other nails to be redone . Out of fear of there being a scene or being labeled problematic or difficult. I just paid and left. I can say that I would go back but probably not with that tech. As their quality of work are not suitable for me.

All of the chairs were full when we got there but no biggy they got us settled. (This was a treat from a friend.) Anywho, we got a Mani-Pedi with gel. My person picked out a great color for me. It was a relaxing experience and I love how my hands and feet looked and felt. The issues? #1 - They charged my friend $200 for both of us cuz apparently most of the services weren't included as it seemed to show on the price sheet. #2 - within about 2 days my fingers began to peel or whatever gel does. Toes still look good though. I have before and after pics. Honestly it started out as a great experience that I was willing to repeat and recommend to others. Now? Not so much. I enjoyed it though so I'm on the lookout for another place. Hand and foot shot are the night of and the hands are today.

If I could choose to rate in half points, I would give this salon a 2.5. The salon is very cute and has lots of parking to be in Carytown. Everyone is really nice and the salon is very clean. I had recently left my previous salon that I had gone to for years because quality of work had started slipping and especially, given the state of things, getting your nails done is a luxury service. I wanted to feel like I was getting an experience comparable to the price and shared this with my tech, who is also the owner. I have been going here regularly for a few months. My husband also goes with me on occasion to get pedicures. At my last appointment, booked ahead, I arrived and my nail tech, who does great, quick work, had stepped out to go to the store and wasn’t back for my appointment. She called another tech, who put me on the phone and asked if someone else could do my nails. At that point, I was a little put off, but not a huge deal in itself. I agreed because I really only had this specific time available and because I had company in town for the weeks prior, my fill was already delayed by circumstance. The tech who did my nails was also nice enough but the quality of work was significantly different. The appointment also took an hour and a half when I typically spend 30-45 mins. I did have two repairs to be done because two had popped off but the time waiting to get a tech and speed the new tech worked at was significantly different and not what I had anticipated. I’m very disappointed by the visit and my nails. I paid extra for a design and it’s honestly really sloppy. It made me feel like I wasn’t valued as a customer. I haven’t had enough time or rapport with SugarCoat to give them the benefit of the doubt because I can’t say if this might be typical practice or not. Between the holiday and my job, which requires me to be out of town a ton, I don’t have time, nor would I like to spend the extra time going out of my way to get this fixed. Because I would be anxious this would happen again, I will just look for a new salon with more consistent quality and customer experience.

This is the best nail salon I’ve been to in Richmond. As a customer I really felt like they cared about the quality of my service. The salon is extremely clean, endless colors for selection, and plenty of staff were available for immediate walk in service on a Sunday. They immediately soaked my gel nails off without scraping or tugging or me having to tell them to take the extra time to soak (unlike many salons). I’m already looking forward to coming back again soon. Thank you for the attention to detail, it really makes a difference!

Left me with a subungual hematoma after I told them they cut my toe and they knew I was a diabetic. Management said I hit my foot on something and it wasn’t them so no refund. But as a diabetic I WOULD KNOW if I hit my foot 100% I’m always careful with my feet. I ended up having to go to urgent care because it hurt to walk and the doctor had to give me antibiotics and saw the nail was cut down way too much and I had blister right on the cuticle. I also had to see a podiatrist which cost me more money out of pocket. Also, the gel polish I got peeled off some of the toes not even two days after the pedicure. And the nail tech Lida just kept talking about my toes on and on. The only resolution my wife got from them was that I could come back for them to fix it. Like absolutely not why would I want that when I’m still dealing with the consequences of this pedicure to this day?! Hate having to make a review like this but this encounter has cost me over $250 out of pocket and physical pain.Service: Pedicure
