Very good people run this place. My sister adopted two kittens on our visit. The place is very clean and the staff are very friendly.

The Richmond Animal Care & Control facility is a great place to adopt pets from, volunteer at, and foster animals from. Anybody I have come in contact with has always been helpful and respectful of my “silly questions”. I adopted my baby boy April 2023, almost a year later and I can confidently say my life as well as his, is forever changed. I wish I could support shelters in more ways than I do, especially this one. If I had one “complaint” it would be that I wish they had some type of included pet health care for those adopted from their shelter (which they may, but I know I couldn’t get it when he needed it, and I know Richmond vets are generally booked up for months so it might not be their fault).

We adopted a 6 month old mix with pitbull. It is obvious that this puppy was trained to a good extent already and treated with love and kindness. I have no concerns about having a pitbull mix.. I have seen him respectfully play and not be triggered when other dogs play rough and growl or lunge at the throat.. this puppy is always able to listen and learn.

We were told to email to make an appointment. It took 3 emails to get a response back over 24 hours later. We were told to come in and then we had to wait over 35 minutes to be told the dog was being adopted. This is the biggest joke I have ever been told in my life. Don't sit there and say it's "walk in" when the article specifically says to EMAIL to schedule appointments. You clearly do not care about the dogs and cats you have...you only care about your bottom line.

I visited the shelter around 4:15pm today after expressing interest in their Thanksgiving foster program and looking I maybe find a suitable dog to adopt. When I arrived, the lady at the front pointed me to the kennel where the dogs are held. No one was there to answer my questions about the adoption or foster process, or about the temperament testing conducted on the dogs--if any. Having walked through the kennels and viewed the dogs, and disappointed by the visit. Additionally, just about all the dogs were pitbulls... and a number of them show signs of potential aggression (I've volunteered with the Richmond SPCA, have come across many pitbulls... I know the signs). Disappointingly I have decided to pass on the prospect of adopting or foster with RACC.
