About Westmoreland State Park
Westmoreland State Park is a welcoming destination offering a variety of outdoor activities and scenic views. Visitors appreciate the friendly and knowledgeable staff, including park rangers who engage and educate guests, making the experience memorable. The park features two beaches—one small beach ideal for fossil hunting, shark teeth collection, and exploring cliffs, and another suitable for swimming and kayaking, with picnic tables nearby. There are three hiking trails, including the short Big Meadow Trail leading to Fossil Beach, perfect for families and those interested in fossils; however, the trails may be challenging for elderly visitors. The park's natural environment is rich with different types of trees, and wildlife such as lizards and a small snake can be easily seen. While the park is sometimes crowded, especially for fishing, it offers a pleasant setting for outdoor fun. For food, visitors should bring their own, as options are limited to vending machines and nearby eateries in Montross or Colonial Beach. The park’s entry fee is $10 for cars, but parking is free for campers. Overall, Westmoreland State Park provides a great day trip destination from Richmond, ideal for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking outdoor recreation in a beautiful setting.
We really enjoyed staying at the state park. Every staff member we interacted with at the park was friendly and knowledgeable. We will be returning again!
