The Goochland YMCA is a bright spot in our new life here in town. The staff members & programs aim to meet the needs & desires of every age even down to providing responsible, engaged child care for our children so my husband & I can work out together. We are grateful for the Christian foundation & glory to God given for all the good which has taken place in this Y over the years.

This is a great place to bring the kids! It's great that they have an outdoor pool that's included with membership! The kids love going here!

I signed my daughter up a month ago for parent/child swim classes. I drove 40 min to the location today only to be told the instructor was not there Bc there was no class. Apparently they decided to have the classes on Saturday. No one contacted me!!!!! The gentleman said he emailed on the 30th informing everyone that classes would be starting THAT DAY and not Tuesday the 2nd yet when I asked to be shown the email that was supposed to have been sent to me, he could not find it. No one ever contacted me!! The woman at the front desk was rude and dismissive when I arrived today. The schedule when I sign in still states Tuesday classes (photo below). I am very disappointed. This is my first time ever at the Y and the entire experience was poor.(Update)The director called me back. Was willing to refund the money but did not take any accountability for the issue. Stated that the swim instructor sent an email the day class was supposed to start in regards to the change. I did not get the email, however, when I asked why the schedule in the system was never updated to reflect such she had no answer. How do you email someone the day of? How do you not call to make sure emails were received? I understand accidents happen but it is not responsible to send an email the day of. It’s not responsible to not follow up with the people who paid for the classes. I am not a member of the Y. I paid extra to have my child enrolled just in the swim class. The director also tried to defend Patty, the woman at the front desk who was rude and dismissive to me. I explained to her I didn’t know what the procedure was and was seeking assistance at the front desk for such. It should not be assumed that everyone knows what to do when entering a NEW place! That is what the job of those at the front desk is, to aide and assist customers when they come in. Not to act like the customer is an inconvenience for not knowing. I understand trying to protect the integrity of your institution, but when the establishment falls short, it is your job to take responsibility and help the customers. Defending a staff who clearly fell short of their intended responsibilities was in bad taste.(Not everyone was awful - the lifeguard was very friendly and tried to help entertain my daughter with water toys while the situation was resolved and the other people at front desk who came in after we had already arrived were kind and helpful in assisting us with the phone numbers/emails we needed to resolve the matter.)

The facilities are great, but my experience with the management team was outstanding. They went above the call of duty to make sure that my daughter’s first visit was enjoyable, despite the State’s fairly insane rules that they had to follow.

I couldn’t recommend the Goochland YMCA enough. I have worked here for six years and plan to always work here. I’ve met so many awesome people and love the environment there. The Ymca is a second home to me!
