My 90+ year old mother was being discharged from a skilled nursing facility after a fall back to her apartment with a high quality queen bed frame she loved that she and my father had purchased over 50 years ago. The bed with pillow top mattress required Mom to use a step stool to get into bed. Occupational therapy deemed the step a fall risk so she needed a bed and mattress that was about 10 inches lower than the current combination. Steven at Mattress Firm Glen Allen took over a hour to educate me about new mattresses with lower thickness but similar comfort to her probably 20+ year old Stearns and Foster. I thought she would need to replace her 7" box springs with a board, but Steven told me about a power base that could fit within the current frame and with a simple remote that a 90 year old can navigate.
It raises her head to allow easier exit in the morning and raises her feet to allow easier changing of the sheets for a mattress the bottom of which will be below the side boards of the current bed frame. It may also preclude my mother having an ugly hospital bed in her bedroom that my sisters had been advocating. All I needed to do was being my mother back to the store to test out the four models we had selected for her. Steven graciously stayed after closing time to close the sale. There was no pressure to purchase and Steven offered that I could have come back three days later when I returned to Richmond to finalize the sale. Steven was the sole salesperson in the store around 5 pm on a Thursday. I had left an adjacent Mattress Warehouse where the sole salesperson was helping a couple and after a 20 minute wait decided to move on with an intent to return, which I did not, so you need to adjust your expectations on service at the store at times when the store has a single salesperson. I hope delivery is as excellent an experience as the purchase experience. This was a non-traditional purchase need and Steven was well prepared to assist me and my elderly mother to meet the specials needs of my mother using her existing furniture. It has been a great experience so far.
